Notre Dame will be one of four teams to compete in the 2026 Jax Baseball Classic

USA Today21-07-2025
Notre Dame will be one of four teams participating in the 2026 Jax Baseball Classic, which will be an early test for them next spring. The Fighting Irish will compete with 2025 national champion LSU, UCF and Indiana in one of the premier early-season tournaments.
The event will be held February 20-22 at VyStar Ballpark in Jacksonville, home of the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, the Triple-A affiliate of the Miami Marlins. Each team will play the other three opponents once across the weekend slate in a round-robin style tournament. Past Jax Baseball Classic champions include Alabama in 2025 and Virginia in 2024.
The weekend will reunite UCF head coach Rich Wallace with the Irish. He spent three seasons with the team from 2020-22.
Notre Dame finished the 2025 season with a 32-21 record, including a 14-16 mark in ACC play, and missed the postseason. The Irish picked up an intriguing grad transfer over the weekend in Andrew Graham, a Division II All-American who hit .446 with 14 home runs and 78 RBI in 2025.

Notre Dame transfer Rocco Spindler makes PFF College First Team Preseason All-Big Ten

Pro Football Focus College released its preseason First Team All-Big Ten Offense on Monday afternoon, one month before Nebraska begins the 2025 season. Right guard Rocco Spindler represents the Huskers on the list. The Notre Dame transfer joins Nebraska after spending four seasons with the Fighting Irish. He played in 40 games for Notre Dame at right guard, starting in 23 of them. Spindler got his first chance of action during his freshman season in 2021, playing in two games before redshirting. He then played in 12 games as a sophomore in 2022, before earning the starting role in 2023. The 6-foot-5, 320-pound lineman got 10 starts in 2023, helping the Fighting Irish rank second in school history in scoring and yards per play. His performance on the Notre Dame helped him become a 2023 Joe Moore Award Semifinalist. Spindler then started the final 13 games of the 2024 season, guiding Notre Dame to the College Football Playoff championship game. Before joining the Fighting Irish, Spindler emerged from Clarkson High School in Michigan with a four-star rating and ESPN tabbing him as the nation's No. 1 offensive guard. Red Sox's 'Dominant Late-Inning Reliever' Not Fulfilling Front Office's Expectations

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. When Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow spoke to the media following the shocking Rafael Devers trade in June, most of the attention was understandably on the reasons why the team decided to send away its superstar slugger. In the midst of that virtual press conference, though, Breslow tossed in one line about one of the returning pieces in that trade -- a comment that indicated he and the front office had very, very high hopes for one player in particular. "We're absolutely excited about bringing in Jordan Hicks, a dominant late-inning reliever into our mix," Breslow said. MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA - JULY 28: Jordan Hicks #46 of the Boston Red Sox delivers a pitch against the Minnesota Twins during the ninth inning at Target Field on July 28, 2025 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA - JULY 28: Jordan Hicks #46 of the Boston Red Sox delivers a pitch against the Minnesota Twins during the ninth inning at Target Field on July 28, 2025 in Minneapolis, far, Hicks has not lived up to the billing, and his performance on Monday night in Minnesota was his second downright ugly outing in the span of a week. With Aroldis Chapman hurt and Garrett Whitlock sick, Hicks was tasked with securing the 4-3 lead, which the Red Sox had taken with an RBI single from Roman Anthony in the top of the ninth. Yet after Hicks warmed up, heavy rains rolled into Minnesota and caused a 90-minute delay. When he came back out for the bottom of the ninth, he gave up a single to DaShawn Keirsey Jr. before hitting Mickey Gasper with a wild slider. After hitting Gasper, Hicks' very next pitch resulted in another hit batsman, this time putting Willi Castro -- who had been squaring to bunt -- aboard to load the bases. Hicks did induce a fielder's choice from Carlos Correa to record the first out of the inning, but Brooks Lee was able to slap an 0-2 fastball into left field, plating two runs and giving Minnesota a 5-4 walk-off victory. The blown save for Hicks came exactly one week after his disastrous outing in Philadelphia. Though that one was overshadowed by the rare walk-off catcher's interference, Hicks issued a four-pitch walk to the first batter he faced and then threw a wild pitch when Max Kepler tried to lay down a sacrifice bunt. Just three of Hicks' 10 pitches that night were strikes. Hicks did make two scoreless appearances in between those outings, but overall, he's allowed at least one run in four of his nine appearances with Boston. He's struggled with command, throwing strikes on just 57.2 percent of his pitches in July. He has two losses and a blown save to go with his two successful saves thus far. He's posted a 4.91 ERA and a 1.636 WHIP in his 7 1/3 innings of work, with five strikeouts, five walks, and two hit batsmen. That all might technically show some improvement from his 6.47 ERA in San Francisco this year, but he's still a far cry from the "dominant late-inning reliever" that Breslow excitedly sold the fan base six weeks ago. Potential Deals That Make Sense With MLB Trade Deadline Approaching

Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Zac Gallen works against a San Diego Padres batter during the ... More first inning of a baseball game Monday, July 7, 2025, in San Diego. (AP Photo/Orlando Ramirez) The MLB trade deadline is Thursday, and rumors are swirling all over the internet. What is fact and what is fiction? It's hard to say. However, here are three trade scenarios that would make sense for both contending teams and teams already looking ahead to 2026 and beyond. Arizona Diamondbacks-Detroit Tigerssou The Diamondbacks trade right-hander Zac Gallen and third baseman Eugenio Suarez to the Tigers for right-handers Troy Melton and Ty Madden and outfielder Justyn Henry-Malloy. Oddly enough, the Diamondbacks and Tigers are in the middle of a three-game series in Detroit that ends Wednesday. So, it's the perfect time to make a deal. The American League Central-leading Tigers acquired right-hander Chris Paddack from the Minnesota Twins on Monday in a trade but could use more starting pitching depth. Gallen is having a disappointing season with a 7-12 record with a 5.60 ERA in 22 starts, but a pitcher who finished in the top five in National League Cy Young voting in 2022 and 2023 could use a change of scenery as he heads to free agency in three months. Suarez could give the Tigers some more thump in a lineup that scored 16 runs in 10 games before beating the Toronto Blue Jays 10-4 on Sunday. The 34-year-old would be a good fit as he is hitting .248 with 36 home runs and an MLB-high 87 RBI in 105 games. Like Gallen, Suarez is on an expiring contract. The out-of-contention Diamondbacks got an up-close look at Melton on Monday night when he shut them out for seven innings while earning his first MLB win in his second career start. Madden, 25, pitched in six games for the Tigers last season in his first taste of the major leagues but has been sidelined all season with a shoulder injury. Henry-Malloy has hit .205 with nine home runs in 117 career games with the Tigers over the last two seasons but has upside as a 25-year-old. Melton, 24, is ranked as the Tigers' No. 11 prospect by Baseball America, and Madden is No. 21. Arizona Diamondbacks-New York Mets The Diamondbacks trade right-hander Merrill Kelly to the Mets for outfield prospect Nick Morabito. Kelly is another Diamondbacks player on an expiring contract and would provide starting pitching depth for the Mets, who are locked in a tight race with the Philadelphia Phillies for the National League East title. Kelly is 9-6 with a 3.22 ERA in 22 starts this season. Kelly is also dependable, as he has pitched at least six innings 14 times. The speedy Morabito has 33 stolen bases in 80 games with Double-A Binghamton this season while hitting .288 with four home runs. He had 59 steals in 119 games combined in 2024 at the two Class A levels. Baseball America ranks Morabito, 22, as the Mets' No. 12 prospect. Pittsburgh Pirates-Toronto Blue Jays The Pirates trade right-hander Mitch Keller and closer David Bednar to the Toronto Blue Jays for third baseman/outfielder Addison Barger, second baseman/outfielder Davis Schneider, and right-handed pitching prospect Dahian Santos. Keller would not only help the AL East-leading Blue Jays this year but is in the second season of a five-year, $77-million contract. He has $55.7 million left over the final three years. The two-time All-Star closer has one more year of arbitration eligibility remaining before he can become a free agent after the 2026 season. Keller is 4-10 but has a 3.69 ERA in 22 starts this season. Bednar has converted all 17 save opportunities to go with a 2.37 ERA in 42 games. The Pirates want young major-league hitters, and Barger and Schneider would fulfill that desire. Barger, 25, is hitting .264 with 14 home runs in 83 games. Though the 26-year-old Schneider's batting average is .205 in 42 games, he has five home runs and a .358 on-base percentage. Schneider does not become a free agent until 2029, and Barger will qualify a year later. The 22-year-old Santos is a projection prospect, having recorded 304 strikeouts in 210 2/3 innings during his minor-league career. However, he has yet to pitch this season due to arm problems. However, taking a gamble is all part of the MLB trade deadline.
