China's faltering economy in focus of WEF Tianjin meeting – DW – 06/27/2025

The world's second-largest economy is suffering from weak household consumption, and its auto industry is particularly vulnerable. Manuela Kasper-Claridge reports from the "Summer Davos" in Tianjin.
"Even if we only walk, we are faster than others," says Sun as he laughs mischievously. He is using the run-walk imagery to describe the state of the Chinese economy compared to its competitors.
The businessman had been doing well selling real estate in China.
Still, he doesn't want to see his full name published because his business is currently not doing well. There are vacant properties all over, and many apartments are just too expensive.
What about the future, what's next? Sun shrugs, suggesting that everything will turn out fine. The salesman in his fifties is hoping for some innovative signs from the government.
Chinese Prime Minister Li Qiang is as optimistic as ever.
He is speaking at the "Summer Davos 2025" conference in Tianjin, organized by the Switzerland-based World Economic Forum (WEF) and officially called the Annual Meeting of the New Champions.
Around 1,700 participants from all over the world have traveled to the northern Chinese city and are listening with hope.
China reported economic growth of 5.5% in the first quarter of this year. The second quarter also looks good, according to the Chinese premier.
But many in China view the government's optimism with skepticism and prefer to save rather than spend their money right now.
Walking through large shopping centers in Tianjin, it is impossible not to notice the nearly empty stores. Demand for watches, jewelry and designer handbags is low, and customers are few and far between.
In the stylish showrooms of Chinese car manufacturers, most of the salespeople look bored as they stare at their mobile phones.
The latest NIO electric car sits alone in its showroom. With no customers in sight, it doesn't look like anyone wants to give it a test drive.
Even at a nearby hair salon, little is happening on a normal weekday. There are four stylists, but not a single customer.
The lack of spending at home is hitting Chinese automakers particularly hard. Competition for market share is fierce, and because of that prices are in a free fall in some cases. Some brand-new vehicles are being sold at used-car prices, a practice called "zero mileage."
"It is good for the consumers, they are getting cars at very reduced prices and get very advanced, competitive cars," says Killian Aviles, head of Asia Pacific Region for Dekra Group, a vehicle testing and inspecting company that is still doing good business in China with testing and consulting for the automotive industry.
"At the same time the profit margins that the companies have, have been eroded," Aviles told DW.

Consolidation seems inevitable, and Aviles is not the only one who is convinced of this. "Only the strongest and healthiest will survive," he said.
China could try and ease the situation by exporting more vehicles to Europe, but that would depend a lot on whether the Europeans allow such imports and do not further increase tariffs.
Yet, a lot of experts don't think the Chinese economy's strong dependence on exports is a viable model for the future.
"China actually realizes that the export-led growth era is over and, of course, it is still struggling with over-investment and excess production," says Diana Choyleva, a senior fellow at the Asia Society Policy Institute's Center for China Analysis.
Choyleva, who specializes on China's economy and politics, is convinced that domestic consumption must increase to keep the economy going.
At the same time, China wants to become a global market leader in as many industries as possible, and visitors are proudly shown select companies around Tianjin. The city is home to one of the world's busiest ports and is focusing on technology like robotics, among other things.
One such company is the Siasun Robot factory, which uses the advertising slogan "Making the world better by Robotics." The company sells its industrial robots in 40 countries around the world, and its product range also includes robots used in the nuclear industry.
However, its latest models aren't on display. Instead, they are only showing off standard machines like those used by the automotive industry.
Still, the growth potential is enormous, a company production manager told DW. "Soon the robots will be building robots themselves," he enthuses. "Where will the people be then?" he asks rhetorically without answering.
On the banks of the Hai River, which flows through Tianjin, many Chinese sit and enjoy picnics. Families with children, the elderly, and many young people are there, too. Some are dancing.
At the same time, many restaurants around town are half-empty just like the shopping malls and showrooms earlier in the day.
Perhaps the restaurants are just too expensive. Or perhaps right now many Chinese consumers would rather save their money for a rainy day. Whatever it is, their homemade food is likely just as tasty as anything they would get in a sit-down restaurant.

An investigation conducted by the World Economic Forum's board on Friday cleared the body's founder Klaus Schwab and his wife of wrongdoing, after a probe into whistleblower complaints. "Following a thorough review of all facts, the Board has concluded that ... there is no evidence of material wrongdoing by Klaus Schwab," the board announced. In April, the Wall Street Journal reported that an anonymous letter sent to the prestigious institution's board of directors accused Schwab and his wife Hilde of mixing their personal affairs with Forum resources without proper oversight. A spokesperson for Schwab had immediately denied all these accusations, but the 87-year-old said he would step down as head of the WEF. The board of the WEF, best known for its annual summit for political and business elites in the luxury Swiss ski resort of Davos, asked a law firm to carry out an independent probe of the allegations. "Minor irregularities, stemming from blurred lines between personal contributions and Forum operations, reflect deep commitment rather than intent of misconduct," the statement said. "The Board has taken action to address all issues identified throughout the investigation, including strengthening the governance in general." Also on Friday, the WEF said it will be replacing former Nestle CEO Peter Brabeck-Letmathe as interim chairman of the board. He is being replaced by the billionaire duo of Larry Finck, the American co-founder of the investment fund Blackrock, and Andre Hoffmann, the Swiss vice-chairman of the pharmaceutical group Roche, according to a separate statement. The letter alleged Schwab had asked junior employees to withdraw "thousands of dollars" from ATMs for him and used organisation funds to pay for massages during hotel stays. But the probe found nothing improper in his conduct. Schwab was born in Ravensburg, Germany, on March 30, 1938. He was married with two children. He was a professor of business management at the University of Geneva, where he taught until 2003, when in the early 1970s he launched the "European Management Forum," the precursor to the current Forum. He expanded it by inviting American business leaders, successfully building a huge network of the world's economic and political elite, transforming the event into a major high-level international gathering dedicated to business relations and the exchange of ideas. The Forum's success has led to the satirical concept of "Davos Man", the supposed avatar of a globalised elite of the stateless ultra-rich committed to free trade and high-minded seminars on corporate social responsibility. Like other international organisations, the WEF has spurred conspiracy theories alleging that it was seeking to establish a "new world order". Elon Musk, the world's richest man and once an influential member of US President Donald Trump's inner circle, accused Schwab on his social media platform X of wanting to "be the emperor of the Earth."

Asian stocks were mixed Friday after better-than-expected Japanese growth and weak Chinese data, while oil slipped back ahead of a US-Russia summit on Ukraine. On Thursday Wall Street finished little changed as strong wholesale inflation data tempered optimism about the US Federal Reserve cutting interest rates. A quarter-point cut is still expected but a larger half-point rate cut is likely "off the table", said Jack Ablin of Cresset Capital Management. Intel surged 7.4 percent following a Bloomberg News report that US President Donald Trump is considering an investment in the beleaguered chip company in exchange for a government stake. Japan's economy grew 0.3 percent in the three months to June, while output for the previous period was revised upwards, averting a possible technical recession for the world's number four economy. The expansion came despite tariffs imposed by Trump on Japanese imports, including on cars -- an industry accounting for eight percent of Japanese jobs. In morning trade in Asia, the Nikkei was up almost one percent while Shanghai, Seoul and Sydney also moved higher. But Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell for the second straight day after Chinese retail sales and industrial production grew at a slower rate than expected last month. A long-term crisis in the real estate sector and high youth unemployment have been weighing on Chinese consumer sentiment for several years. The situation has worsened with the heightened turmoil sparked by Trump's trade war. Oil prices dipped, reversing gains on Thursday ahead of Trump's Alaska summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin on ending the Ukraine war. The move is set to remove "inefficient" regulations for private space ventures in a move that could benefit former Trump advisor Elon Musk. Environmental groups criticized the order. US President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Wednesday that he claimed would ease regulations that govern commercial rocket launches. The order directs the US transportation secretary to eliminate or expedite environmental reviews for launch licenses given by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). "Inefficient permitting processes discourage investment and innovation, limiting the ability of US companies to lead in global space markets," the executive order reads. It also calls for the cancellation of "outdated, redundant or overly restrictive rules for launch and reentry vehicles," according to a statement released by the White House. Trump's latest executive order also states that "inefficient" permitting processes "discourage investment and innovation," which in turn limits US companies' ability to lead in global space markets. The move could benefit private space companies such as SpaceX, the company owned by former Trump advisor Elon Musk, despite the two falling out publicly in recent months. The company — which dominates the global private space launches market — plans missions to the Moon and Mars using its Starship rockets, which saw a series of setbackslastly in June as a routine test ended up in an explosion. Environmental groups have criticized Trump's moves to deregulate commercial spaceflight. "This reckless order puts people and wildlife at risk from private companies launching giant rockets that often explode and wreak devastation on surrounding areas," Jared Margolis of the US-based nonprofit Center for Biological Diversity said in a statement. The FAA approved an increase in annual SpaceX Starship launches from five to 25 in early may, saying it would not negatively affect the environment. SpaceX boss Musk, the world's richest man, has repeatedly complained that studies over the environmental impact of Starship slow the tests of the rocket, together with post-flight mishap investigations and licensing reviews required by the FAA.
