Broadway Celebrates Earth Day With In-Person And Streamed Live Concert

Taking place in Times Square's Pedestrian Plaza, between 45th and 46th Streets, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and streamed by Stars in the House, this concert will feature live performances and appearances by Broadway headliners, young performers and environmental leaders.
It will be a marquee event for the New York City Department of Transportation's city wide 'Car-Free Earth Day' and highlight the theater community's ongoing efforts to combat the climate crisis with actionable steps.
Joining the event, hosted by Seth Rudetsky and James Wesley Jackson, will be Grammy Award nominee Merle Dandridge (Hadestown), Tony Award nominee Stark Sands (& Juliet), Lissa deGuzman (Wicked), Adrian Blake Enscoe (Swept Away), Jenn Gambatese (Mrs. Doubtfire), Tony Award nominee Anika Larsen (Almost Famous), Jaygee Macapugay (Suffs), Jennafer Newberry (Wicked), Tony Award nominee and Grammy Award winner Andrew Rannells (Book of Mormon), Kelsie Watts (SIX: The Musical), Rema Webb (Chicago), and Khaila Wilcoxon (Redwood).
In addition, Tony Award winner Shaina Taub (Suffs) will lead a grand finale featuring over 80 young performers from across the region, who will sing her anthem 'Keep Marching,' from Suffs.
Today's performance is designed to shine a spotlight 'on the next generation of changemakers and calling in audiences to collective action and perseverance,' the two alliances said.
Kindergarten and 1st grade students from P.S. 212 in Hell's Kitchen also will join Broadway favorite Jenn Gambatese on stage for a special performance of 'Do Re Mi.'
In addition, over 75 students from the tri-state area—including students from Cassie Okenka Voice Studio, EPIC Players, K/1 Chorus at P.S. 212 led by Andrew Brubaker, NYU Steinhardt, Perkiomen Valley High School, R.Evolución Latina, and Wolf Performing Arts Center—will perform, while representatives of Materials for the Arts, HeadCount and Final Strike Collaborative also will speak.
According to the Broadway Green Alliance, this organization 'educates, motivates and inspires the entire theatre community and its patrons to implement environmentally friendlier practices. The BGA was launched in 2008 as an ad hoc committee of The Broadway League and is a fiscal program of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. The BGA brings together all segments of the theater community, including producers, Broadway and Off-Broadway theatres in New York and around the country, college drama programs, theatrical unions and their members, and related businesses.'
In addition, the Broadway Green Alliance works closely with the National Resources Defense Council to identify and disseminate better practices for theater professionals. It also reaches out to theater fans across the country, and, through alliances, internationally.
The Times Square Alliance improves and promotes Times Square, cultivating, it says, 'the creativity, energy and edge that have made the area an icon of entertainment, culture, and urban life for over a century. Founded in 1992, the Alliance keeps the neighborhood clean and safe, promotes local businesses, manages area improvements and produces major annual events with partners including New Year's Eve, Solstice in Times Square and Taste of Times Square.'

Ayo Edebiri and Don Cheadle will make their Broadway debuts next spring as a father and daughter united by math as well as mental health struggles in a revival of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play 'Proof.' The play, by David Auburn, previously ran on Broadway from October 2000 to January 2003 — an unusually long run for a serious drama. In 2001 it won not only the Pulitzer but also the Tony Award for best play. Set in Chicago, 'Proof' is about a young woman whose father, a well-known mathematician, has died; she is juggling complex relationships with her sister and with one of her father's former students. And those relationships are upended by the discovery of a mathematical proof of uncertain authorship in her father's office. Reviewing an Off Broadway production in 2000, the critic Bruce Weber, writing in The New York Times, deemed it 'an exhilarating and assured new play' and said that it 'turns the esoteric world of higher mathematics literally into a back porch drama, one that is as accessible and compelling as a detective story.' The play has been widely staged, and in 2005 was adapted for film. Edebiri is an Emmy Award winner for her role in the FX series 'The Bear.' Cheadle was nominated for an Academy Award for his work in the 2004 film 'Hotel Rwanda.' The 'Proof' revival will be directed by Thomas Kail, who won a Tony Award for directing 'Hamilton.' It is scheduled to begin previews March 31 and to open April 16 at an unspecified Shubert theater. Mike Bosner ('Beautiful' and 'Shucked') and Kail are the revival's lead producers.

Miss Piggy is going to Broadway—and 'Oh, Mary!' is squealing mad
Miss Piggy, gay icon, is finally set to make her Broadway debut — and one show is Kermit-green with envy. Playbill announced Wednesday that the Muppets will be making their premiere on the Great White Way alongside magician Rob Lake. While it's a long-awaited move for the beloved foam puppets, whose stage presence had previously been limited to Disney theme parks, Oh, Mary! took to social media to bemoan the booking. Some background: When Oh, Mary!'s creator, Cole Escola, appeared on Amy Poehler's podcast, Good Hang, in July, Poehler asked the nonbinary creative who would play the role of the titular character, Mary Todd Lincoln, in a theoretical movie adaptation. ‘Dawson's Creek' reunion: James Van Der Beek, Katie Holmes and cast to participate in charity script reading
You didn't want to wait, and now you won't have to any longer. The cast of 'Dawson's Creek' – James Van Der Beek, Katie Holmes, Michelle Williams and Joshua Jackson – will reunite for a live script reading of the show's pilot next month on Broadway in New York City in support of F Cancer and Van Der Beek. Van Der Beek, who opened up about being diagnosed with colorectal cancer last November, shared a snapshot of the core four cast members to his Instagram on Wednesday, set to the opening lyrics of Paula Cole's 'I Don't Want to Wait,' which famously served as the teen soap's theme song. The post included the quote, 'If we were truly meant to be, then we will find a way back to each other.' The event, titled 'Dawson's Creek Class Reunion,' will take place on September 22 at the Richard Rodgers Theatre. In addition to the core cast, Mary Beth Peil, Kerr Smith, Meredith Monroe and Busy Phillips will also perform in the reading. Van Der Beek said in November that he was battling stage 3 cancer, which he said he had been dealing with privately until a tabloid shared plans to run a story about it.
