JDT's Arif Aiman wins fourth straight MVP award
KUALA LUMPUR : Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT)'s star Arif Aiman Hanapi made history at the 2024-2025 National Football Awards here tonight by becoming the first player to be crowned Most Valuable Player (MVP) for the fourth consecutive time.
The national player's remarkable achievement places him in a league of his own, surpassing the record of former national striker Norshahrul Idlan Talaha, who won the title three times in a row from 2010 to 2012.
It was also a memorable night for the 23-year-old Arif Aiman after he won two other awards – Best Midfielder and Best Goal in the Malaysia League (M-League) 2024-2025 – and was named in the Fans XI as a forward.
This marks Arif Aiman's first win in the Best Midfielder category having previously won the Best Forward title three times from 2021 to 2023.
Arif Aiman excelled in this season's M-League, showcasing his skills with 12 goals and 13 assists to steer the Southern Tigers to the Super League and FA Cup trophies.
He also helped JDT reach the Malaysia Cup final against Sri Pahang FC, which will be played at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Arif Aiman's JDT teammate, Bergson da Silva, won the Super League Golden Boot and Best Foreign Player award after having bagged 32 goals this season.
The goal tally is his highest since he started playing in the Malaysian League with JDT. He last emerged as top scorer in the 2022 season with 29 Super League goals.
Kuching City FC head coach Aidil Sharin Sahak caused an upset by winning the Best Coach award for the first time after beating two other nominees, Hector Bidoglio (JDT) and Kinoshi Katsuhito (Selangor FC).
Having been nominated from 2019 to 2021, the Singaporean-born coach finally won the award after leading Kuching City to fourth place in the Super League in only their second season in Malaysia's top-flight league.
It marks the club's best achievement since its founding as an amateur team competing in the People's Football League in 2015.
Overall, the 2024-2025 National Football Awards saw JDT dominate eight of the main categories contested this time.
In addition to the three awards won by Arif Aiman and two by Bergson, Ahmad Syihan Hazmi Mohamed lived up to expectations by successfully defending his Best Goalkeeper crown for the third consecutive time, while Feroz Baharudin took home his maiden Best Defender trophy.
As Super League champions for the 11th consecutive time, JDT were also named Best Team of the season, bringing their total haul to eight major awards under Bidoglio's leadership.

Turtles turn the tide after coach Badrul's halftime call
PETALING JAYA: A simple halftime reminder proved the spark for Terengganu's dominant 3-0 win over Penang in their Super League opener on Sunday. In a rain-soaked encounter at the City Stadium in Georgetown, the first half was lively but goalless, with the Turtles carving out numerous openings through French striker Yan Mabella and Brazilian winger Gabriel Silva. Penang goalkeeper Khairulazhan Khalid produced a string of excellent saves, while both teams were denied potential penalties by referee Khairulsyahmi Ahmad Khalidi. At the break, Terengganu coach Badrul Afzan Razali kept his message clear – be patient. 'I reminded the boys to be a bit more patient in the second half. 'We had the ball, so we just needed to make quick attacks and play the right through passes. 'We worked well as a unit and deserved the win,' said Badrul. The response was instant. Four minutes into the second half, centreback Safwan Mazlan split the defence with a pass to Azam Azmi Murad, who fired low past Khairulazhan. Six minutes later, Mabella found Silva, whose toe-poke made it 2-0. Badrul then rotated his attack to keep players fresh, a move that paid off when substitute Khala'if Naskam scored with his first touch in the 88th minute, latching onto fellow substitute Baqiuddin Shamsuddin's through ball. 'Khala'if came in and scored — it was perfect for us,' Badrul said. The win gave Terengganu a flying start to their campaign, while Penang coach Wan Rohaimi Wan Ismail admitted his side 'lost rhythm' after the interval. Terengganu next host Police in Gong Badak tomorrow, while Penang face Melaka in Hang Jebat.

Crystal Palace lose appeal against Europa League demotion
PARIS: Crystal Palace's appeal over their demotion from the Europa League to the UEFA Conference League was rejected on Monday by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). The London club, who won last season's FA Cup, fell foul of UEFA's rules governing multi-club ownership. European football's governing body determined that as of March 1, American businessman John Textor had control or influence in Palace and French club Lyon. It means under UEFA rules they are unable to compete in the same European competition and Lyon held on to the Europa League spot by virtue of their higher league position. Palace appealed to CAS last month after Textor agreed to sell his 43 per cent stake in the Premier League club to New York Jets owner Woody Johnson. However, that deal was struck well after UEFA's deadline of March 1 for multi-club conflicts to be resolved. "After considering the evidence, the Panel found that John Textor, founder of Eagle Football Holdings, had shares in CPFC and OL and was a Board member with decisive influence over both clubs at the time of UEFA's assessment date," CAS said in a statement. "The Panel considered that the UEFA Regulations are clear and do not provide flexibility to clubs that are non-compliant on the assessment date, as CPFC claimed." Palace, who beat Liverpool on penalties to win the Community Shield after a 2-2 draw at Wembley on Sunday, will enter the UEFA Conference League in the play-off round later this month. Nottingham Forest, who finished seventh in the Premier League, are set to replace Palace in the second-tier Europa League. - AFP

Lightning Ramadhan ready to strike twice
Solid show: Ramadhan Sananta (centre) in action during the Super League game. - Bernama PETALING JAYA: It just took three minutes for debutant Ramadhan Sananta to underline his prowess for Brunei as they drew 2-2 against Police in the Super League match at the Selayang Stadium on Saturday. A darting run, a clean finish and Ramadhan had put Brunei ahead against Police. Three minutes later, the 22-year-old Indonesian striker turned provider, slipping in a perfect pass for Miguel Oliveira to make it two. By the sixth minute of his debut, Ramadhan had done what every striker dreams of, a goal and an assist before the opposition had even settled. And while Police clawed their way back through Park Tae-su's quickfire double in the second half to force a 2-2 draw, the headlines belonged to the man in Brunei yellow. Now, the stage is set for a much bigger test. On Tuesday (Aug 12), last season's Super League runners-up Selangor await at the Petaling Jaya Stadium and Ramadhan is the man they will be watching closest. "We know Selangor are a strong and big team in Malaysia. It's not an easy task, but all the players are ready to give their best," Ramadhan said with quiet confidence. Signed from Indonesian Liga 1 side Persis Solo, Ramadhan's move to Brunei was to prove himself against some of South-East Asia's best defenders. His mission is clear: become a lethal finisher and win back his place in the Indonesian national team, where competition is fierce with the likes of Rafael Struick, Ole Romeny, Stefano Lilipaly and Ragnar Oratmangoen. Ramadhan has so far won 15 caps with Indonesia, scoring five goals. "I'm still learning to become a good and sharp striker. Perhaps in every opportunity, I should be able to score a goal. "I am very happy to be able to play in the Malaysian league, where we know there are many talented and quality players. And I have a strong ambition to score more goals and compete alongside other strikers." For Selangor's backline, that's the danger - Ramadhan does not just get chances, he makes them happen. Last weekend was his announcement. Next could be his statement.
