SC ruling raises MP's political temperature
The apex court, while hearing the case yesterday, placed it in the 'top of the board' category and ruled that daily hearings would take place from September 23. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, Additional SG KM Nataraj and Advocate General Prashant Singh represented the state government.
Reacting to the ruling, Congress state President Jitu Patwari wrote on social media, "Like the previous chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, the Mohan Yadav dispensation is keeping this crucial matter pending owing to political malice and a strategy. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) shall have to pay a heavy price for violating the constitutional rights of Backward Classes and ruining the future of youth. This battle for social justice will be fought on every front by the Congress that shall stage a decisive struggle for OBC rights."
Meanwhile, BJP state Media In-charge Ashish Agarwal described the ruling as the dispensation's victory. "There was a time when the then Chief Minister Kamal Nath would himself furnish false statistics. He made no lawyer stand in court so that the Backward Classes did not get their right," he alleged.

DMK has not fulfilled its poll promises, it is misleading people: Vasan
The beginning of the end for the DMK had started and the curtains would be down in 2026 with the election results, said Tamil Maanila Congress (Moopanar) president G.K. Vasan here on Thursday. Speaking to media persons, he said the DMK had not kept its promises, but it was lying that it had fulfilled 90% of them made in 2021. The people were intelligent, and were waiting to show their disappointment against the present regime through the ballot. The TMC leader, who is part of the AIADMK-BJP combine, said closer to the general elections to be held in Tamil Nadu in mid-2026, more parties would join them with the sole objective of defeating the DMK. The victory of the AIADMK and the allies was crucial to save the State from the clutches of the DMK, he added. On the law and order front, Mr. Vasan said the State had earned the distinction for lawlessness. Not a day passed without a grave crime being reported. Caste killings, crimes against women and the rise in POCSO Act cases showed that the State 'is not safe at all, especially the southern districts'. He said the 10-day-long protest by the conservancy workers of Greater Chennai Corporation was yet another classic example of the failed governance of the DMK. 'Is this the way to treat the working class?,' he asked, adding that the people were agitated over the manner in which the Ministers handled the issue. Many locations in Chennai stank. The anti-incumbency wave had already set in,' he claimed. Condemning the property tax scam in Madurai Corporation, he said police should unravel the truth and conduct the investigation in a fair and transparent manner. He said only when the Tamil Nadu government extended its cooperation to the Union government, the State would benefit in every sphere. For this to happen, the AIADMK-BJP front should come to power and the TMC would work towards achieving this goal, he added. Later, former MP and senior party leader N.S.V. Chithan, former MLA K.S.K. Rajendran and other functionaries from the southern districts participated in a meeting presided over by Mr. Vasan.

Truth of triumph, says Bihar Congress on Supreme Court's SIR order
Ahead of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's 16-day vote adhikar yatra (right to vote march) in Bihar from August 17, the State's party president Rajesh Kumar 'Ram' on Thursday (August 14, 2025) hailed as a 'triumph of truth and defeat of conspiracy' the Supreme Court's interim order on the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Bihar. The court on Thursday directed the Election Commission to publish the names of voters deleted from the draft roll published on August 1 with reasons. 'This [order] is our first victory,' Mr. Kumar said. 'This is not only an order of the court but a big step taken to protect the democratic values of the country. Since the beginning, we have been saying that deletion of names from the voters' list is a murder of democracy. Today, the Supreme Court has protected democratic rights of people of Bihar and now there will not be any ploy to steal votes,' he added. Mr. Gandhi will start his march from Sasaram and will be joined by Opposition leaders, the party said. The yatra will culminate in a public meeting in Patna's Gandhi Maidan on September 1. The Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha will cover 1,300 km, visiting Rohtas, Aurangabad, Gaya, Nawada, Jamui, Nalanda, Sheikhpura, Munger, Katihar, Purnia, Supaul, Darbhanga, Sitamarhi, West Champaran and Saran districts, said party spokesperson Rajesh Rathore. 'The State unit of the party will organise the nationwide 'save democracy torch procession' in all district headquarters on Thursday,' said party spokesperson Asit Nath Tiwari. Asked how the party will benefit from Mr. Gandhi's 16-day visit in the upcoming Assembly elections, senior Congress leader Kishore Kumar Jha said, 'It will make the desired difference like the party had earlier got after the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra.' In the 2024 Lok Sabha election, Congress candidate Manoj Kumar had won the Sasaram parliamentary seat defeating BJP's Shivesh Kumar. From the neighbouring Lok Sabha seat Aurangabad, the Rashtriya Janata Dal candidate Abhay Kushwaha beat Sushil Kumar Singh of the BJP. Party general secretary (organisation) K. C. Venugopal and other leaders visited Sasaram on Wednesday to review preparations for Mr. Gandhi's visit.

Thrissur's voters' list row boils over as parties arm themselves for legal battle
The political temperature in Thrissur shows no signs of cooling as allegations of large-scale voters' list tampering and bogus voting escalated into a multi-party legal and political confrontation. All the three major parties - the Communist Party of India (CPI), Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)], and the Congress - are preparing to move the Election Commission and the courts with what they claim is hard evidence of fraud. CPI leader and former Minister V.S. Sunilkumar set the pace on Wednesday by submitting documents to the State Chief Electoral Officer. CPI State secretary Binoy Viswam has gone further, demanding a Supreme Court-monitored judicial probe into what he calls a 'large-scale desecration of the voters' list' in Thrissur, allegedly carried out under the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) influence. On Suresh Gopi Addressing the media in Thrissur on Thursday, Mr. Viswam accused Union Minister Suresh Gopi of playing a 'central role' in the manipulation. 'His stone-like silence speaks volumes. Earlier, he would rush to comment on every issue. Now, even in the face of this grave matter, he remains mute,' Mr. Viswam said. Drawing parallels with Bihar, where he claimed voters were removed on religious grounds, Mr. Viswam said Thrissur's case was different: 'Christian voters were not deleted , fake voters were added. Mr. Gopi must explain who brought them, where they are now, and who funded this operation.' He also took a swipe at sections of the Christian clergy. 'Those dazzled by gold crowns and sweet cake must read Vicharadhara carefully, especially the parts about recognising your enemies.' Fresh allegations came from Mr. Sunilkumar, the CPI's 2024 Lok Sabha candidate from Thrissur, who claimed ten votes were registered under the address and number of the BJP Thrissur district committee office. 'In booth number 42, at 'Deendayal Mandiram,' votes were added without even a house number. None of these individuals live there,' he said. He further alleged that BJP State vice-president V. Unnikrishnan, a Malappuram native, who voted in Thrissur, played a direct role in the voter roll manipulation. CPI(M) district secretary K.V. Abdul Khader said the malpractice extended beyond Thrissur city, citing 17 fake votes allegedly added at a BJP leader's house in Avinissery panchayat. These voters, he said, cast ballots at booth number 69 in Nattika, where 79 non-residents were on the rolls. Last-minute inclusion Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee political affairs committee member T.N. Prathapan accused the BJP's central leadership of manipulating Kerala's 2023–24 voters' list update by influencing a private software company engaged by the Election Commission, enabling the last-minute inclusion of over 30,000 fake voters in Thrissur. He called for judicial investigation into the irregularities. The BJP has fired back with State vice-president K.K. Aneesh Kumar accusing the CPI(M) and the Congress of committing the same malpractice in Punkunnam area. Meanwhile, Thrissur District Congress Committee president Joseph Tajet warned that the new voter registration software provided by the Election Commission lacks safeguards to detect duplicate votes, a change he said will 'open the floodgates' for double voting in Kerala's upcoming local body polls. With the CPI planning a mass protest in Thrissur on Saturday, the voters' list controversy is set to dominate the district's political landscape well into the coming weeks.
