Disney+'s solid content portfolio, including nearly 700 movies, is a key growth driver.
Introduction
Disney+ has emerged as a key growth driver for Disney, primarily driven by its solid content portfolio. The service offers nearly 700 movies and 11,700 episodes of television shows from brands such as Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars and National Geographic and Disney+ originals. Disney has an impressive line-up of big-budget movies slated to be released over the next couple of years, a number of which will appear on Disney+ simultaneously with their theatrical releases. The rapidly growing subscriber base should strengthen Disney's position in the increasingly saturated streaming space currently dominated by Netflix.

Bull Case
Disney's expanding streaming service offerings Disney+, ESPN+, Hulu, Disney+ Hotstar (India, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand) and Star+ (Latin America) are expected to be major growth drivers in the long run. These services are driving Direct-to-Consumer (DTC) subscription fees that increased 13% year over year in the second quarter of fiscal 2024 that ended on Mar 31. Growth in core Disney+ subscribers and to a lesser extent, Hulu and ESPN+, were the key drivers. DTC subscription fees are expected to witness a CAGR of 9% between 2024 and 2027.
Disney's focus on sports streaming, particularly Live Sports, is expected to drive growth in the long haul. For instance, ESPN+ offers tournaments like UFC Lightweight Championship, Major League Baseball (MLB), National Hockey League (NHL), Major League Soccer, Grand Slam tennis, Italy's Serie A soccer and live sporting events, original shows, series and documentaries. Renewal of MLB sports rights deal through 2028 and agreement with Spanish club football's first division, La Liga, further strengthens Disney's sports content offerings. Disney also remains focused on offering content on linear television. In this respect, Disney and ESPN's recent long-term partnerships with National Football League (NFL) are noteworthy.
Rapid international expansion has been a key catalyst driving Disney+'s growth. In the past couple of years, Disney+ has been launched in India (through the Disney+ Hotstar service), through a strategic partnership with Canal+ in France, in Japan (via NTT DOCOMO) and several European as well as Latin American countries. Disney+ is currently available in more than 80 countries and territories outside the United States and Canada. The international expansions and a solid content portfolio have helped Disney+ garner a substantial subscriber base within a short period. Disney's new hub for international content creation supports the worldwide expansion of the company's direct-to-consumer business. This is expected to drive Disney Media and Entertainment Distribution (DMED) revenues, under which Disney+ is reported.
Recovery in the theme parks business is expected to drive Disney's prospects in the long haul. Latest attractions like the Frozen theme land at Hong Kong Disneyland and Walt Disney Studios Park in Paris, as well as the Zootopia theme land at Shanghai Disney Resort, are expected to boost the prospects of the theme parks business.
Bear Case
Disney is suffering from lower advertising revenues. In fiscal 2023, revenues declined 15% from the year-ago period due to fewer impressions primarily attributed to declines at Hulu and Disney+. The decrease in impressions at Disney+ was due to the lack of IPL cricket programming compared with the year-ago period. Moreover, Disney is focusing on its streaming business, which needs significant investment on content and marketing. The rising spending is expected to keep consolidated margins under pressure. Moreover, Linear Networks' profitability suffers from higher programming and production costs. Disney's recently theatrical releases have failed to ignite box office with unimpressive box office performances of The Marvels, Wish, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and Elemental. Although Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol 3 did well, it is expected to not have been enough to drive Disney's box office performance in the near term.
Disney has a leveraged balance sheet. Total borrowings (including the current portion of borrowings) were $45.3 billion as of Dec. 28, 2024, compared with $45.81 billion as of Sept. 28, 2024. Disney's debt balance compares unfavorably with cash, cash equivalents and its current marketable investment securities balance of $6 billion.

Hedge Fund Bets
Conclusion
Disney+ is facing significant competition in the streaming market from the likes of Netflix and Amazon prime video. Netflix enjoys a first-mover advantage in the streaming market, and its solid original programming portfolio is a major differentiator. Amazon is also catching up. Apple TV+ is gaining recognition with Emmy and Oscar wins. Comcast's Peacock and Paramount Global's Paramount+ benefit from their huge libraries of movies and shows. Moreover, with the completion of the merger of WarnerMedia with Discovery, the competition is expected to get stiffer.

UFC 317 full fight: Ilia Topuria defends title with historic knockout of Max Holloway
Ilia Topuria shook the MMA world in his last trip to the octagon. Apart from defending the UFC featherweight title, Topuria became the first man to knock out Max Holloway – something many thought to be impossible in this sport given his proven durability and chin. Topuria promised he'd put out the Hawaiian at UFC 308, and that he did, pressuring him and using his elite movement and boxing to corner him and connect with big shots. It was one of the most impressive showings in all combat sports in 2024. You can rewatch Topuria's historic knockout finish of Holloway in the video above. Ilia Topuria (16-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC) returns to the cage this Saturday in the main event of UFC 317, which takes place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas (ESPN+ pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+). He takes on former champion Charles Oliveira (35-10 MMA, 23-10 UFC) for the vacant lightweight title. Topuria, who vacated the featherweight belt earlier this year, is attempting to pick up his second divisional title.

Disney price target raised to $140 from $120 at Guggenheim
Guggenheim raised the firm's price target on Disney (DIS) to $140 from $120 and keeps a Buy rating on the shares. The firm, which updated its Disney model to better reflect a refined operating expense outlook at Linear Networks, modestly lower theatrical revenue from relative underperformance of recent films, better than previously forecast Sports advertising revenue and 'relatively resilient' attendance and travel trends in the Experiences segment, notes that it lifted its full year segment operating income forecast to $17.7B from $17.6B, which is 'modestly ahead' of consensus $17.65B. With Hulu now fully under Disney control, the firm views the company as 'well positioned to pursue a unified direct-to-consumer strategy' and further lean into bundle packaging to drive incremental revenue, the analyst added. UFC 317 predictions: Full fight card picks for prelims and main card
Gambling content 21+. The New York Post may receive an affiliate commission if you sign up through our links. Read our editorial standards for more information. International fight week at UFC 317 should bring the fireworks to Las Vegas. The 12-fight card features two title fights, and just four of the 12 fights are projected to end inside the distance. An insane expectation of violence on Saturday night begins at 6:30 p.m. Eastern with the entire prelim card being broadcast on ESPN before switching over to pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET. We had a solid run last week, following some lackluster performances from a betting perspective over the past few weeks. The 6-5 record would point to an average day, but nailing a +290 wager on top of two other plus-money wins helped us profit 1.72 units and a 15.64 percent ROI. UFC 317 predictions Ilia Topuria vs. Charles Oliveira Charles Oliveira has always been heavy on the forward pressure; it's a major piece of his game. But he'll need to be extremely careful coming in against a boxer like Ilita Topuria. Topuria is one of the best knockout artists in featherweight history and now moves up to 155 lbs to compete for the lightweight title. Olivieira, 36, has fought 34 times in the UFC and has taken tons of damage. We've seen previously that he hates getting hit, going back years to when he tapped out due to strikes from Paul Felder in 2017. By all accounts, Topuria hits harder than anyone Oliveira has ever fought. Typically, as you get older, you don't want to get hit harder than you have ever been hit before. Topuria is an excellent grappler himself, and I suspect that he isn't as big of a liability on the ground as many would think. He did win the title in 2021 and defended against strikers and won by submission multiple times, but Saturday's not his night. Topuria is the biggest star in the UFC, and I suspect he wins by knockout. PICK: Topuria by KO/TKO (-150, BetRivers) UFC fighter Charles Oliveira in action at UFC 309. AP Alexandre Pantoja vs. Kai Kara-France If you were to judge this fight purely based on MMA math, you could argue that Kai Kara-France has an excellent chance to snag a win here as an underdog, considering he defeated Askar Askarov while Alexandre Pantoja has a loss against him. ' My issue with backing Kara-France as a +220 underdog is that he has four losses in his last nine fights. Plain and simple, he fights on too thin of margins to get consistent wins, and has had some funky decisions in the past. Those losses were against some of the best fighters in the division, but his loss to Brandon Royval by submission is concerning on multiple levels. Pantoja is an excellent wrestler for his size, and his striking isn't bad either, but if he can't get takedowns, he'll have problems. Flyweight is a high variance division, and these two have fought before on The Ultimate Fighter, with Pantoja winning by decision. I suspect that Pantoja gets the job done on Saturday, but the line has no value at the price and especially the division they fight in. Back this one to go the distance with a long shot bet on Kara-France by decision at +500, considering that's his most likely win condition, even though I don't love the fighter personally. PICK: Fight goes the distance (+104, Fanatics Sportsbook) | Kara France by decision (+500, FanDuel) Joshua Van celebrates a win at UFC 316. AP UFC 317 full card picks Ilia Topuria vs. Charles Oliveira: Topuria by KO/TKO -150, BetRivers) Alexandre Pantoja vs. Kai Kara-France: Fight goes the distance (+104, Fanatics Sportsbook) | Kara France by decision (+500, FanDuel) Brandon Royval vs. Joshua Van: Royval by submission (+900, Bet365) Beneil Dariush vs. Renato Moicano: Dariush ML (+136, DraftKings) Payton Talbott vs. Felipe Lima: Lima inside the distance (+400, Fanduel) Jack Hermansson vs. Gregory Rodrigues: Fight goes to decision (-112, FanDuel) Hyder Amil vs. Jose Delgado: Over 1.5 rounds (-159, BetRivers) | Fight goes the distance (+160, Fanatics Sportsbook) Viviane Araujo vs. Tracy Cortez: Pass Terrance McKinney vs. Viacheslav Borshchev: Fight starts round 2 (+104, FanDuel) | Fight goes the distance (+500, DraftKings) Niko Price vs. Jacobe Smith: Small bet (no more than .2 units) on Price ML (+1200, FanDuel) Jhonata Diniz vs. Alvin Hines: Fight goes to decision (+300, Bet365) Chris Ewert vs. Jackson McVey: Pass Why Trust New York Post Betting Erich Richter is a brazilian jiu-jitsu blue belt but he has a black belt in MMA betting.
