Guwahati shines in Swachh survey, other NE cities lag

Guwahati: Northeast's biggest city, Guwahati, shines at the 44th national rank in the 3-10 lakh population category, a significant leap from 402nd rank last year, in the Swachh Survekshan 2024-25 rankings announced by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs on Thursday.
Besides Guwahati, all the other cities across the northeastern states lag behind in the assessment. However, six cities — North Lakhimpur in Assam, Jiribam in Manipur, Shillong in Meghalaya, Lunglei in Mizoram, Jalukie in Nagaland, and Khowai in Tripura — emerged as promising "Swachh Shehar". These six cities, along with Guwahati, have won the "Promising Swachh Shehar of the State" award.
Six urban local bodies (ULBs) of Assam — North Lakhimpur, Kokrajhar, Tinsukia, Bilasipara, Makum, and Mariani — received 'ODF++' (Open Defecation Free) certification, Agartala in Tripura and Jiribam in Manipur also received the certification.
No ULB of Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram, or Meghalaya received the certification. The certification signifies a significant advancement in sanitation beyond simply being free from open defecation.
It means an area not only achieves ODF status (no open defecation) and ODF+ status (functional and well-maintained public and community toilets, along with solid and liquid waste management) but also ensures safe management and treatment of faecal sludge and sewage.

Guwahati, Nagaon, Silchar, and Dibrugarh in Assam received a one-star rating in the 'Garbage Free City' category, while a one-star rating was awarded to Imphal and a three-star rating to Jiribam in Manipur, and a one-star rating to Panisagar in Tripura.
No cities from Nagaland, Arunachal, and Meghalaya received any rating in the Garbage Free City category.
In the northeast, Assam topped the list as far as the "door-to-door" garbage collection is concerned, as 57% of garbage is collected from door to door across the 96 ULBs.
Assam is followed by Tripura with 55% across 20 ULBs. However, the scenario is not encouraging in Arunachal, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, and Nagaland.
Except Assam and Manipur, the treatment of the collected garbage in all the northeastern states is very poor. In a few states, no treatment of garbage is done at all, the Swachh Survekshan report revealed.

The Kozhikode Corporation and Payyoli municipality have made impressive gains in the Swachh Survekshan 2024 rankings released on Thursday (July 17, 2025). The Corporation rose from 3,367 in 2023 to 70 this year, while Payyoli jumped from 3,707 to 596. Payyoli was also listed among the 20 cities awarded 'one star' in the 'Garbage Free Cities' category. 'It is not about what we did this year to improve the ranking, but about what we did not do in the previous years,' said S. Jayasree, health standing committee chairperson of the Corporation, who stressed that proper documentation and timely entries under the guidance of the Suchitwa Mission made all the difference this time. 'We have been doing our work well over the past few years, and the results were evident. However, we never gave much importance to the Swachh Survekshan Survey, and as a result, failed to present our achievements effectively during the inspections. All that changed this year,' she added. Payyoli municipal chairman V.K. Abdurahman believed that sustained efforts to maintain cleanliness in the town over the past few years had now paid off. 'We worked diligently to achieve the best possible results under the State government's 'Malinya Muktha Navakeralam' project,' he said. The municipality houses a material recovery facility (MCF) considered a model for the entire State, in addition to having a mini MCF in every division. Funds have already been earmarked for setting up more MCFs wherever needed. 'Installing awareness boards in public spaces, conducting awareness drives through mural paintings, and placing CCTV cameras at locations prone to illegal dumping helped us meet the target,' Mr. Abdurahman added. The intervention of the Suchitwa Mission in preparing local bodies for the survey has yielded results across the State, evident from the number of local bodies, including major cities, that have made significant leaps in the rankings. This is the first time any urban civic body in Kerala has come within the top 1,000 ranks since the survey began in 2016.

Muharram mourning resonates in some Hindu followers too
Lucknow: Number of public processions has reduced as Muharram progresses, compared to the first 10 days of this first month of the Islamic calendar. Azadari inside homes, however, continues. Interestingly, alongside Shia Muslims, numerous non-Muslims observe Azadari in their homes from the first day of Muharram to the 8th of Rabi-ul-Awwal, which is third month of the Islamic calendar. Azadari refers to the mourning rituals and commemoration observed by the Shia, particularly during Muharram, to mourn the martyrdom of Imam Hussein and his 70 companions in the Battle of Karbala. Among those who deeply connect with this tradition is resident of Baba ka Purwa Khadra, Sitapur road, Sooraj Gupta (36), who represents second generation of a family that follows the Azadari ritual. Facing medical challenges, his mother, late Nisha Gupta, had prayed to Hazrat Imam Hussain for a child. Her prayers were answered when Sooraj was born on May 15, 1989. Since then, the family has maintained the tradition of keeping a taziya at home and Sooraj continues the tradition devotedly. Apart from performing matam, Sooraj also sets up a sabeel (free refreshment stall) near Kazmain Imambara during Muharram. Following tradition that began with his grandfather, Ankit Kumar Bharti (32), resident of Pareganj Gallamandi, performs 'maatam' and attends Majlis-e-Imam Hussain. In 2008, his parents Mahesh Bharti and Radha Bharti renovated the imambara built by his grandfather, Jannat e Panchatan Babul Hawaej, near their home. Iraq, however, granted him visa, despite its ongoing war with Iran, so he went to Iraq and worked at Babylon Hotel. His visits to Karbala and Roza of Hazrat Imam Hussain deepened the family's bond with the legacy. Another azadar Rajesh Bhangra, resident of Alambagh, said he had been participating in Azadari for 50 years and believed his wishes were fulfilled through this devotion.

Gorakhpur ranks 4th nationally in Swacch Surveskshan
1 2 Gorakhpur: Gorakhpur has clinched the top spot in Uttar Pradesh under the 3–10 lakh population category in the Swachh Survekshan 2024 rankings, while securing an impressive 4th position nationally among cities with a population between 1–10 lakh. The city also bagged the prestigious 5-Star Garbage Free City (GFC) certification and the coveted Water+ status, alongside securing 3rd place in the Safaimitra Surakshit Shehar Challenge, Gorakhpur municipal corporation (GMC) official informed. This feat marks a significant turnaround for Gorakhpur, which ranked 74th nationally in 2023. According to officials, the success is attributed to a focused strategy involving 100% door-to-door waste collection, scientific disposal of legacy waste, establishment of RRR (Reduce-Reuse-Recycle) centres, and technological innovations like QR-based monitoring. Over 2.24 lakh metric tonnes of legacy waste were scientifically cleared from the Ekla Bandha site, which was later rejuvenated with over 1.5 lakh miyawaki trees across 40 acres.
