'I gave up Edinburgh Fringe for London alternative and saved thousands'

Daily Mirror7 days ago
Many know about Edinburgh Fringe and just how it can make a career - but for one comedian it nearly left him penniless. He tells the Mirror why he's returning to Camden Fringe instead.
Every summer, thousands of performers flock to the Edinburgh Fringe - a place where unknowns become household names and careers change overnight. To comedians, it's more than just a festival. It's a proving ground, where success stories are born, after all, it's where Phoebe Waller-Bridge debuted Fleabag.

But behind the buzz, there's a stark reality for some rising comedians. For Jonathan Rudge, performing at the festival came with a price tag that quickly turned the dream into a financial nightmare. Now, he's speaking to The Mirror about why he's ditching Edinburgh and heading to Camden Fringe instead.

'Ever since I was young, I've always known about Edinburgh Fringe, and it always seemed like the destination for up-and-coming talent,' he told The Mirror.

In 2023, Jonathan finally got his 'golden ticket', a slot to perform. But once the excitement wore off, the numbers didn't lie. He was going to be in minus long before he even got on stage.
'In total, the two weeks cost me about £8,000 and three quarters of that was on accommodation alone and it wasn't like the Ritz, it was basic. Accommodation is the biggest money killer,' he said.

He's not alone. As Jonathan explains, the industry often pushes people down the Edinburgh route especially when you're trying to break through. 'If you're someone who's not got loads of money or doesn't have connections, it's just so hard to get in.'

For rising acts, the exposure at Edinburgh is undeniable. It's the place where careers are launched - if you can afford to play the game. 'Edinburgh Fringe is where the scouts are, that's where the press is and where commissioners go,' Jonathan said. 'And if you can't afford to be there, it can feel like you're being locked out.'
While he loved performing there, he knew it wasn't sustainable - not for him, and not for many other working-class creatives. 'Edinburgh Fringe has turned into a rich person's game, it's just Bank of Mum and Dad people.'
He left Edinburgh proud of what he'd achieved, but also knowing he couldn't do it again, at least not without serious financial backing. 'I could not financially do that again,' he admitted. 'I kind of got it in my head that it was a one-time-only thing. I thought it was Edinburgh or nothing.'

That was until a promoter put Camden Fringe on his radar - an alternative creative festival in London that's been running since 2006. He'd never heard of it before, but after doing his research, he realised it was built for talent not just trust funds alone. 'I just want to be able to perform without worrying about whether I can even afford a bed to sleep in,' he said.
That's what led him to Camden Fringe - a space that felt more within reach. 'Camden was just more accessible,' he added. 'And I won't be going home with my bank account in minus.'

'I'm actually really excited about it. London's so multicultural, and there's so many different layers to it. I want all different people to come along.'
He will be performing at Camden Fringe and his show 'By Order of the Peaky Grindrs', dives into navigating gay dating culture, mental health, and his most outrageous breakup stories. If you're heading to Camden this summer, it's one you can't miss.

A new partnership with the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society will help sell 'Brand Scotland' around the world, the Scottish Secretary has said. The Scotland Office hopes the schemes will help promote Scottish produce and talent overseas. The Tattoo, for example, will support 'Brand Scotland' in trade missions to Japan and Australia. Scottish Secretary Ian Murray | PA Speaking today during the first week of Edinburgh's summer festivals, at the newly-refurbished Filmhouse, Mr Murray will say the arts sector is an important part of the UK's soft power, building links and relationships around the world. 'For some, art and culture is a tool of power, of wealth,' he will say. 'For others it is a tool of nation building, of defining who we are and who we are not. For me, it is something which transcends states and systems, and teaches us something about the human condition which other experiences simply cannot do. Commenting ahead of his speech, Mr Murray said: "Scotland's excellent arts and culture sector opens doors right around the world. From the global stage of the Edinburgh Fringe to the pageantry of the Military Tattoo, our arts and creativity don't just entertain - they build the relationships and showcase the innovation that drives real economic returns for communities across Scotland. 'Our partnership deal with the Edinburgh Fringe will help us sell Brand Scotland around the world, helping us deliver the economic growth that will put more money in people's pockets." 'We're proud of the artists and audiences who make the Fringe possible and who create this joyous celebration of creativity each year. Putting the Fringe at the centre of Brand Scotland recognises that work, and opens up a world of new platforms for participants.' The Scottish Secretary will also announce the first round of successful bids from the overseas Brand Scotland fund, which is investing £250,000 this financial year to 'promote Scottish soft power, culture and trade opportunities worldwide'. Funding has also been provided for initiatives including supporting an event in Berlin with the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland, a 'Travelling Museum of Whisky' in Bolivia, a celebration of Scottish heritage and craftsmanship in Switzerland, and St Andrew's Day events to promote Scottish exports and cultural engagement. The majority contain nothing, whilst one conceals a life-altering £250,000 prize, and another harbours the feared early departure card. ‌ As the new series launched on Wednesday evening (August 6), the holiday-makers touched down at Grenada airport, where Stephen was waiting to greet them. Their initial enthusiasm quickly turned to concern when the presenter disclosed that one couple wouldn't be securing accommodation at the hotel, reports the Mirror. But there are eleven pairs here and there only ten rooms available at The Fortune Hotel," Stephen explained. "Only the first five pairs to arrive at the hotel will be guaranteed a room. If you're among the bottom six pairs, then you will be in danger because one of those pairs will be heading home." The contestants were subsequently taken to the harbour, where they needed to solve a crossword puzzle to unlock their room keys. ‌ Upon reaching the hotel successfully, the leading five pairs selected their cases, with Jake and Mike covertly claiming the £250,000 jackpot. Briony and Chelsey were sent home early (Image: ITV) The remaining six pairs faced the nerve-wracking task of avoiding any briefcase containing the elimination card. ‌ In a nail-biting turn of events, best mates Briony and Chelsey chose the ill-fated suitcase and were promptly eliminated before they could even settle into the hotel. Another duo is on the brink of departure after they're handed the next early checkout card, though their identities remain under wraps for now. The season two opener left audiences taking to social media in droves to express their astonishment at the unexpected early elimination twist. ‌ Viewers were left speechless after a major twist (Image: ITV) "Someone getting eliminated before it starts? Well I never saw that coming," posted one viewer on X (formerly Twitter). Another added: "So much for ITV budget cuts flying 11 couples to the Caribbean only to fly one pair home back on day 1," while a third said: "Wow harsh start to the show I love it." Speculation is rife among fans, with one suggesting that Briony and Chelsey might make a comeback: "I'm guessing that Chelsey and Briony will get some kind of reprieve later in the series." The Fortune Hotel is available to stream on ITVX

Mel B shares emotional birthday message to Geri Halliwell despite wedding snub

Spice Girls icon Mel B took to social media to wish her pal Geri Halliwell a happy birthday after the latter missed her London wedding to Rory McPhee back in July Mel B shared a sweet message to fellow Spice Girl, Geri Halliwell, on her birthday after Ginger Spice was unable to attend the star's recent wedding in London. Scary Spice tied the knot with long-term partner, Rory McPhee, at an intimate ceremony at St. Paul's Cathedral in London last month. ‌ While fans were eager to spot fellow Spice Girls in attendance, only Emma Bunton was photographed at the event. Geri was noticeably absent as Mel tied the knot with Rory. Geri also chose not to post any well-wishes to Mel B on social media at the time, adding further fuel to the fire on their rift. ‌ And now, weeks after her nuptials, Mel quashed rumours of a feud as she wished Geri a happy birthday on social media. It comes after Mel B's 'spiritual' Moroccan wedding with non traditional dress. ‌ Along with a throwback photo of the two leaving an event, Mel B wrote: "Happy birthday ginge!" along with a few partying face emojis. In the picture, Ginger Spice threw up peace signs and smiled at the camera and Mel looked stunning as she also smiled for the cameras. ‌ Emma shared a few snaps onto her page, including one from a music video shoot, a selfie and a gorgeous wedding picture. She wrote: "Happy Birthday to my beautiful friend @gerihalliwellhorner! Love you to bits. Have the most gorgeous day." Posh Spice opted for a post on her Stories and said: "Happy birthday @gerihalliwellhorner!! Kisses @emmaleebunton xx," as she posted a recent snap of the three at a party. ‌ Mel C joined in on the birthday wishes and posted a carousel of throwback and recent pictures of the group, writing: "Happy Birthday darling @gerihalliwellhorner, our Ginger Spice. Have an amazing day, love you to pieces." There had been rumours of a feud, with it being said that Geri was offended by Mel B after the singer claimed the pair slept together while the Spice Girls were still topping the charts. And when the Look At Me star swerved Scary's nuptials in July, fans were convinced things were still awkward between the pair. ‌ While Emma attended Mel's wedding in London last month, neither Geri, Victoria or Mel C showed their face. Victoria and Mel C sent their apologies, saying they had a prior engagement, which they couldn't get out of. However, Geri stayed silent. But, a source said to the Mirror that there was no feud between the Friendship Never Ends stars, adding that Geri, Mel C and Victoria simply had other commitments. "There's no snub, the girls are all on friendly terms with one another, but it's no secret that Geri is busy with Christian at Formula One and Victoria is extremely busy with her fashion brand," they said.
