JDT hold La Liga side Levante to a draw

KUALA LUMPUR: Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) continued their impressive preseason form in Spain by holding newly promoted La Liga side Levante UD to a goalless draw in a friendly on Saturday.
The match, held at Levante's training centre in Bunol, saw the Segunda Division champions pile continuous pressure on the 11-time Super League champions.
However, JDT, guided by Xisco Munoz, showed defensive steel throughout the match.
Leading the JDT charge was Arif Aiman Hanapi, who showcased his trademark flair and agility, creating several chances and forcing the Levante defence to stay on high alert.
The draw against Levante follows JDT's earlier 2-2 stalemate with English Championship side Cardiff City, reinforcing the Johor club's growing reputation as more than just a domestic powerhouse.
The Southern Tigers will wrap up their Spanish tour with a final friendly against Valencia's reserve team, Valencia Mestalla, at the Camilo Cano Olympic Stadium tomorrow.

Modric joins Milan in one-year deal

LONDON: Croatia captain Luka Modric, who left Real Madrid after 13 years at the LaLiga club, has completed his move to AC Milan on a one-year deal with an option to extend until June 2027, the Serie A side said on Monday. The midfielder's arrival was confirmed by newly-appointed Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri earlier this month. "Very happy to be here to start a new chapter in my career," said Modric, who turns 40 in September, in an Instagram video shared by Milan. Milan said Modric will wear the number 14 shirt, which he previously wore during his four years at English side Tottenham Hotspur to honour Dutch great Johan Cruyff. "It's an immense honour for them to compare me to (Cruyff)... I wore the no. 14 at Tottenham in honour of him, and because the no. 10 wasn't available," Modric had said after winning the Ballon d'Or award in 2018. Modric, regarded as one of the greatest midfielders of all time, announced in May that he would leave Real after the Club World Cup. He has made 597 appearances for the Spanish club, winning 28 trophies including four LaLiga and six Champions League titles. He played his last game for Real on Wednesday, coming on as a second-half substitute during a 4-0 loss to Paris St Germain in the Club World Cup semi-finals. "It's a bitter end... he's a legend of world football and of Real Madrid. He'll be remembered for many more good things than for the 25 minutes he played today," Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso said after the match. Modric, considered Croatia's greatest player of all time, has represented the country a record 188 times, scoring 28 goals. He won the Golden Ball at World Cup 2018, where he led Croatia to the final for the first time. He won the Ballon d'Or in December that year, becoming the first player other than Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo to win the prestigious annual award since 2007. Modric's arrival reinforces a Milan midfield that also features Youssouf Fofana, Yunus Musah and Ruben Loftus-Cheek, with Samuele Ricci joining from Torino earlier this month. Milan, who failed to qualify for a European competition after finishing eighth in the Italian top-flight league last season, begin their Serie A campaign against newly-promoted Cremonese on August 23.--REUTERS

Disability rights group slams Yamal's birthday bash for using people with dwarfism

MADRID: A Spanish disability rights group has vowed legal action over the reported hiring of people with dwarfism as entertainment at Barcelona soccer star Lamine Yamal's recent 18th birthday party, condemning the practice as discriminatory. The young winger, who helped Spain clinch the European Championship last year, celebrated his coming of age on Saturday with a star-studded jamboree that included celebrity guests from the music industry such as Bizarrap, Bad Gyal or Quevedo, as well as many of his Barca teammates and social media influencers. The Association for People with Achondroplasia and Other Skeletal Dysplasias (ADEE) said in a statement that the use of people with dwarfism as spectacle at Yamal's party perpetuated stereotypes, fuelled discrimination and undermined the dignity and rights of people with disabilities. It cited Spain's disability rights law, which prohibits shows or recreational activities that use people with disabilities in a way that provokes ridicule or undermines their dignity. "It's unacceptable that in the 21st century, people with dwarfism are still used for entertainment at private parties, particularly when public figures are involved," said ADEE President Carolina Puente. "The dignity and rights of our community cannot be a source of amusement under any circumstance." Yamal's representatives did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comment. Yamal posted on Monday a one-minute video edit with highlights from the party on his Instagram account that featured fellow Barca players Gavi and Robert Lewandowski playing poker and roulette, though it did not appear to show people with achondroplasia, the genetic disorder causing dwarfism. The Spaniard - who won LaLiga, the Copa del Rey and Spanish Supercup with Barca this season - wore a white suit with a red rose in his lapel, lavish jewellery and a cane, in keeping with the party's "Italian gangster" theme.

No more tough guys in local football?

KUALA LUMPUR: Have Malaysia's new generation of footballers become softies? So much so, we have to import "heritage players" from abroad for the national team? Football legend Indra Putra Mahayuddin thinks so. He feels that they don't make footballers like they used to. Indra, Malaysia's all-time top scorer in the Super League with 106 goals, said the footballers of today are pampered, compared to the tough ways he came through. Indra asked how is it possible that he, at 44 years old, still plays in the A1 Semi-Pro League and could still keep up with his team's training sessions. That proves one thing — the training intensity of today is not as tough compared to his early years as a professional. "I see a big difference between players from the past and players now. Back then, we went through training that was intense and crazy. "But now, even at my age, I can still follow the training sessions. That says a lot about how training today isn't as hard. Players these days are pampered. "When they're criticised, many can't handle it. But criticism is there to help you grow, not to bring you down. That's what many of us from the older generation went through and benefited from," he said. Indra earned over 50 caps for the national team from 2002-2015 and netted 17 international goals. A product of the Perak youth system, he burst onto the scene with Perak before going on to represent Kelantan, Selangor, Pahang, Felda United and KL City. Known for his intelligence, composure in front of goal and versatility on the left flank or as a forward, Indra was one of the few Malaysian players to perform at a high level across two decades. He said Harimau Malaya today is in a far better place than it was during his time, thanks to reforms and talent additions. "We should thank the Regent of Johor, Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, for introducing big changes. The inclusion of heritage players has helped take the national team forward," he said.
