Modric joins Milan in one-year deal

LONDON: Croatia captain Luka Modric, who left Real Madrid after 13 years at the LaLiga club, has completed his move to AC Milan on a one-year deal with an option to extend until June 2027, the Serie A side said on Monday.
The midfielder's arrival was confirmed by newly-appointed Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri earlier this month.
"Very happy to be here to start a new chapter in my career," said Modric, who turns 40 in September, in an Instagram video shared by Milan.
Milan said Modric will wear the number 14 shirt, which he previously wore during his four years at English side Tottenham Hotspur to honour Dutch great Johan Cruyff.
"It's an immense honour for them to compare me to (Cruyff)... I wore the no. 14 at Tottenham in honour of him, and because the no. 10 wasn't available," Modric had said after winning the Ballon d'Or award in 2018.
Modric, regarded as one of the greatest midfielders of all time, announced in May that he would leave Real after the Club World Cup. He has made 597 appearances for the Spanish club, winning 28 trophies including four LaLiga and six Champions League titles.
He played his last game for Real on Wednesday, coming on as a second-half substitute during a 4-0 loss to Paris St Germain in the Club World Cup semi-finals.
"It's a bitter end... he's a legend of world football and of Real Madrid. He'll be remembered for many more good things than for the 25 minutes he played today," Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso said after the match.
Modric, considered Croatia's greatest player of all time, has represented the country a record 188 times, scoring 28 goals. He won the Golden Ball at World Cup 2018, where he led Croatia to the final for the first time.
He won the Ballon d'Or in December that year, becoming the first player other than Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo to win the prestigious annual award since 2007.
Modric's arrival reinforces a Milan midfield that also features Youssouf Fofana, Yunus Musah and Ruben Loftus-Cheek, with Samuele Ricci joining from Torino earlier this month.
Milan, who failed to qualify for a European competition after finishing eighth in the Italian top-flight league last season, begin their Serie A campaign against newly-promoted Cremonese on August 23.--REUTERS

Soccer-Xavi application for India coaching job was a hoax, AIFF says

Soccer Football - LaLiga - FC Barcelona Training - Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper, Barcelona, Spain - November 3, 2023 Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez with players during training REUTERS/Albert Gea/File Photo (Reuters) -The All India Football Federation (AIFF) confirmed on Saturday that a job application attributed to former Barcelona manager and Spain midfielder Xavi Hernandez for the India head coaching role was a hoax. The AIFF's national team director told The Times of India on Thursday that Xavi's name was on the list of applicants. The report also quoted an AIFF technical committee member saying the his candidacy was deemed too expensive to pursue. "The AIFF received an email furnishing the applications from Spanish coaches Pep Guardiola and Xavi Hernandez. The authenticity of their applications could not be confirmed, and it has since emerged that the email applications were not genuine," the AIFF said in a statement. It had not been previously reported that the AIFF had also received an application purporting to be from Manchester City manager Guardiola. The AIFF Technical Committee said it had reviewed 170 applications for the Indian men's head coach role, narrowing the list to 10 before short-listing three candidates. The AIFF sacked former India manger Igor Stimac in June last year before appointing Spaniard Manolo Marquez, who left the job this month and returned to his role as coach of Indian Super League team FC Goa. ‘I'll only rest when I'm injured': FIFPro says stars silenced over match demands

AMSTERDAM, July 26 — Top footballers are afraid to speak out against playing too many matches for fear of the impact it could have on their careers, the general secretary of global players' union FIFPro said yesterday. Alex Phillips was speaking after FIFPro held a meeting in Amsterdam with 58 national player unions from around the world to discuss concerns over the way the sport's world governing body Fifa is managing global football. The meeting came less than two weeks after the end of the first 32-team Club World Cup in the United States, a tournament hailed as a huge success by Fifa president Gianni Infantino but criticised by FIFPro for the demands it has placed on players already faced with a crowded schedule. 'Before the Club World Cup, I was speaking to some of the top stars and they were saying they hadn't had a rest for 'X' amount of time,' Phillips said. 'One of them even said, 'I'll only get a rest when I get injured'. Others were resigned actually, and cynical about speaking up. 'Then you see some of the same players two weeks later having to record social media videos saying 'We think the Club World Cup is great,' because their employers are telling them to do it. 'You have this contradictory situation where players can't speak up. They are in an invidious position. They can speak up but it might have consequences.' FIFPro said that Fifa's recent focus on the Club World Cup in the United States was an example of the body ignoring many fundamentally more important issues facing players around the world. 'It is unacceptable for an organisation that claims global leadership to turn a blind eye to the basic needs of the players,' FIFPro said in a statement, notably citing the 'overloaded' match calendar, heat concerns at the Club World Cup and an 'ongoing disregard for players' social rights'. FIFPro Europe filed a complaint to the European Commission last year accusing Fifa of abusing its position with regards to its handling of the international match calendar. The summit hosted by the union yesterday came after it was left out of a meeting held by Fifa on the eve of the recent Club World Cup final. Sergio Marchi, the Argentinian president of FIFPro, this week slammed Infantino's leadership of Fifa and accused him of running an 'autocracy' in an interview with The Athletic. Fifa hit back at FIFPro in a statement yesterday as it called for dialogue 'with legitimate bodies that put player welfare first' and said it had tried unsuccessfully to get the union to attend its meeting in New York on July 12. 'Fifa is extremely disappointed by the increasingly divisive and contradictory tone adopted by FIFPRO leadership,' the Zurich-based organisation said. 'This approach clearly shows that rather than engaging in constructive dialogue, FIFPRO has chosen to pursue a path of public confrontation,' which aims to preserve 'their own personal positions and interests.' — AFP

Brazil court says Flamengo's Henrique to face trial for alleged match-fixing

FLAMENGO player Bruno Henrique will stand trial in Brazil for sports fraud aimed at allegedly benefiting his relatives through online betting, according to a court ruling seen by AFP on Friday. Henrique, 34, was charged in June for allegedly deliberately earning a yellow card during a domestic league match in 2023, in coordination with gamblers within his family circle. 'The information indicates the existence of criminal conduct by the accused Bruno Henrique,' said a judge from a Brasilia court in the decision authorizing the player's trial. The forward is accused of match-fixing, a crime punishable by two to six years in prison. The case centers on a game Flamengo lost 2-1 to Santos in Brasilia in November 2023. Henrique received a yellow card for a foul and then a second for insulting the referee, for which he was sent off. Police found several compromising messages on the phone of his brother, Wander Nunes, who will also stand trial. According to the judge, the police investigation concluded that Henrique 'intentionally acted to be penalized with the card,' while his brother encouraged him 'with the aim of obtaining financial gain.' In November 2024, police carried out several search warrants, including at Henrique's home in Rio de Janeiro and his room at Flamengo's training facility. His brother, sister-in-law, and cousin allegedly created accounts with online betting platforms the day before the match and wagered on him receiving a yellow card. Despite the legal troubles, Henrique continued to play for Flamengo, appearing in the Club World Cup in the United States in June. More recently, he captained the team in Wednesday's win over Red Bull Bragantino in the Brazilian league. Henrique and his brother must appear before the judge within 10 days, according to the ruling. Match-fixing allegations have rocked Brazilian football, with investigations implicating major clubs in South America's most powerful league.
