Modric joins Milan in one-year deal

LONDON: Croatia captain Luka Modric, who left Real Madrid after 13 years at the LaLiga club, has completed his move to AC Milan on a one-year deal with an option to extend until June 2027, the Serie A side said on Monday.
The midfielder's arrival was confirmed by newly-appointed Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri earlier this month.
"Very happy to be here to start a new chapter in my career," said Modric, who turns 40 in September, in an Instagram video shared by Milan.
Milan said Modric will wear the number 14 shirt, which he previously wore during his four years at English side Tottenham Hotspur to honour Dutch great Johan Cruyff.
"It's an immense honour for them to compare me to (Cruyff)... I wore the no. 14 at Tottenham in honour of him, and because the no. 10 wasn't available," Modric had said after winning the Ballon d'Or award in 2018.
Modric, regarded as one of the greatest midfielders of all time, announced in May that he would leave Real after the Club World Cup. He has made 597 appearances for the Spanish club, winning 28 trophies including four LaLiga and six Champions League titles.
He played his last game for Real on Wednesday, coming on as a second-half substitute during a 4-0 loss to Paris St Germain in the Club World Cup semi-finals.
"It's a bitter end... he's a legend of world football and of Real Madrid. He'll be remembered for many more good things than for the 25 minutes he played today," Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso said after the match.
Modric, considered Croatia's greatest player of all time, has represented the country a record 188 times, scoring 28 goals. He won the Golden Ball at World Cup 2018, where he led Croatia to the final for the first time.
He won the Ballon d'Or in December that year, becoming the first player other than Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo to win the prestigious annual award since 2007.
Modric's arrival reinforces a Milan midfield that also features Youssouf Fofana, Yunus Musah and Ruben Loftus-Cheek, with Samuele Ricci joining from Torino earlier this month.
Milan, who failed to qualify for a European competition after finishing eighth in the Italian top-flight league last season, begin their Serie A campaign against newly-promoted Cremonese on August 23.--REUTERS

Soccer-Barca cancel Japan pre-season friendly citing contractual breaches

(Reuters) -Barcelona have cancelled their pre-season friendly match against Vissel Kobe in Japan, citing contractual breaches by the promoter, while their two scheduled friendlies in South Korea are also at risk of suspension, the LaLiga club said. The LaLiga champions were scheduled to play Japanese side Vissel Kobe on Sunday, while they are due to play South Korea's FC Seoul on July 31 and Daegu FC on August 4. "Barcelona announces that it has been obliged to suspend its participation in the game scheduled for next Sunday in Japan due to serious contractual breaches on behalf of the promoter," Barca said in a statement on Wednesday. "Nevertheless, the club will consider readjusting the leg of the summer tour in South Korea, where two games are scheduled against FC Seoul (31 July) and Daegu FC (4 August), if certain conditions are met by the promoter. "If these conditions are met, then the club will travel to South Korea in the coming days. Barcelona regrets this incident and the impact it will have on the many, many Barca fans in Japan." Vissel Kobe also issued a statement on Thursday. "We sincerely apologise for any concern this may cause to the many fans and related parties who were looking forward to this match," the J1 League club said. "Our club is working in collaboration with relevant parties to gather necessary information and take appropriate measures." 'History again' - Bonmati celebrates as Spain set up Euro final against England

ZURICH: Spain star Aitana Bonmati said her team planned to take some time to celebrate reaching their first ever European Championship final following Wednesday's extra-time win over Germany, before quickly turning their thoughts to another title decider against England. "We have made history again, beating Germany for the first time and reaching a Euro final which we had never done before," a smiling Bonmati remarked after her extra-time strike secured a 1-0 victory in Zurich in the semi-final clash. "We feel proud to be part of this generation of players that is achieving so much, but this is not over yet," added the reigning Ballon d'Or winner before the Spain squad headed back to their training base in Lausanne, on the shores of Lake Geneva. "They are already tearing things up in the dressing room and there won't be much silence on the bus journey back to Lausanne. "We will enjoy this but tomorrow we need to start thinking about England." The game on Sunday in Basel against the reigning European champions will be a rematch of the 2023 World Cup final, when Olga Carmona scored the only goal to hand Spain the title. England will have had an extra 24 hours to prepare for the match after beating Italy in their semi-final on Tuesday, although they needed extra time to win that match having been taken all the way to penalties against Sweden in the quarter-finals. "I know they played twice 120 minutes but we knew today could be a long match and it was," Bonmati said, in English. She knows that England's substitutes – notably Chloe Kelly and Michelle Agyemang – have had a major impact in each of their knockout ties en route to the final, but insists Spain can trust in their own squad. "We believe in our players, the 11 starters, but we also have a lot of players on the bench who can do better in the second half or in extra time. We have a big squad and we trust all of them," she said. "England have a lot of players that we have faced a lot of times – we know them and they know us so we have to prepare the best way we can to win."
