Time of Indiaa day ago

Kochi: As schools reopened after summer vacation, a collective of IT employees in the city launched Back to School initiative to support students in need. As part of the programme, the organization launched a campaign to support children from poor families by requesting public to contribute study materials to volunteers of the organization.
The campaign is being conducted for eighth year in a row under the banner of Progressive Techies, a collective of IT employees in Kerala. The organization installed Back to School donation boxes in all buildings of Infopark.
Those who would like to be a part of the campaign can contribute materials such as books, bags, computers, pencils, pens, pencil boxes, umbrellas, water bottles, tiffin boxes, etc. Public can also contribute money for purchasing the materials.
Amount for a school kit is fixed at Rs 800.
Past editions of the campaign were a big success as many people, including NRIs, contributed a huge amount as donations. Last year, the organization managed to support around 4,500 students.
The organization is expecting an increase in contributions this time. During Covid pandemic, the collective donated smartphones and televisions to some students as part of the campaign.

On Father's Day, he came to reunite with one son, grieve for another

1 2 3 On Father's Day , Ramesh Bhaliya arrived in Ahmedabad not to receive warm hugs but to collect the mortal remains of his youngest son and meet his eldest son, who miraculously survived the AI 171 crash and is his only solace now. The London businessman had flown halfway across the world to Civil Hospital, where Ajaykumar lay in the morgue, while his eldest son Viswashkumar was recuperating in the ward. Viswash, who was seated on 11A of AI 171, is the sole survivor of the plane crash. Both the brothers are British citizens and had come down to Ahmedabad for business purposes. The weight of grief has rendered Ramesh speechless. "Rameshbhai is in no state to talk to anyone. He is still grappling with the tragedy," says Deepak Devji, the village sarpanch from Diu who travelled to Ahmedabad to support the grieving family. Ramesh has taken refuge in a local hotel nearby, while a close friend maintains watch over Viswash as he recuperates. "No other close family members have travelled with him to the city," Deepak adds. The brothers originally hail from Patelwadi area of Bucharwada village in Diu, having migrated to London several years ago to build their dreams. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo For 15 years, they had jointly operated a garment business in the UK and a boat business in Diu. Seat 11A became a lifeline for Viswash since it was near the emergency exit on the ill-fated AI 171. Just across the aisle, on 11J, sat his younger brother, Ajaykumar Ramesh. Within 30 seconds of take-off, fate intervened mercilessly, separating the brothers in ways nobody could have imagined. Viswash stumbled from the burning wreckage, his survival captured in heart-wrenching video shot by rescue workers and volunteers. It shows him staggering through the debris, bloodied and in shock, crying out: "Plane fatyo che! Plane fatyo che!" (The plane has exploded). Local residents and rescue workers rushed to his aid, pulling him into an ambulance as the magnitude of the disaster unfolded around them. The brothers and their uncle and aunt were among 15 residents from Diu's Bucharwada and Vanakbara villages aboard the flight.

Indrayani river bridge collapse: Officials say no clarity yet on who is responsible, minister says work of new bridge was pending

Soon after its collapse, confusion reigned supreme about who was responsible for the upkeep of the bridge on the Indrayani river at Kundamala near Talegaon Dabhade, which was over three decades old. Minister of Water Resources Girish Mahajan Sunday admitted that while tenders to build a new bridge were passed, the work was delayed due to the rain. 'The bridge was built in 1992, and recently a tender of Rs 7-8 crore was cleared to build a new bridge but the execution was delayed due to rain,' he said. Chandrakant Wagmare, additional chief executive officer of Pune Zilla Parishad, admitted they were not clear about who was responsible for the upkeep of the bridge. 'It is still not clear as to who had the responsibility, as this area fell under the Cantonment area. But action will be taken,' he said. Mahajan said that while it was a pedestrian bridge, two-wheelers used to ply on it. Local residents who spoke to The Indian Express also blamed the lack of upkeep as well as two wheelers plying on it for the collapse of the bridge. Located near the whirlpools and gorges of the river, Kundamala has become a tourist spot, especially during the rainy season. Due to the small waterfalls and the whirlpools, many tourists thronged the area, especially over the weekend. The bridge in question linked both sides of the river. For tourists, the bridge provided the perfect background for pictures and many thronged to take selfies. That the condition of the bridge was precarious was known to local residents. Aishwarya Gonte, a local resident, said that two-wheelers regularly used the bridge despite warnings. 'Locals had complained before but no one took up maintenance or repair works,' she said. Raghuvir Shelar, local corporator, said both sides had notices pasted prohibiting the entry of two-wheelers. 'But people used to regularly ply through it because no police personnel used to check the activity. The situation was so grave that protective grills were installed on the collapsed bridge around 10 days ago,' he said. Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who is the minister in charge of public works, has ordered a survey of all old bridges in the state.
