Dravidian University in Kuppam adds Engg wing

Hans India28-06-2025
Kuppam (Chittoor district): Dravidian University in Kuppam is set to establish its own dedicated engineering college, marking a major milestone in the institution's academic journey.
The move, which gives further boost to higher education in the State, comes following an initiative by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, who represents the Kuppam constituency in the State Assembly.
Though the town of Kuppam already has a private engineering college, this marks the first time Dravidian University will have an engineering college under its own administration.
The University currently offers a variety of programmes in arts, science, technology and management, but lacked a formal engineering stream until now.
In a circular issued on June 27, 2025, the University announced the approval from the Government of Andhra Pradesh to launch the new engineering college. The institution will begin operations from the 2025–26 academic year with two BTech programmes: Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), and CSE with a specialisation in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI & ML). Each programme will accommodate 60 students per year.
The University expressed gratitude to the State government, particularly Chief Minister Naidu, for sanctioning the much-awaited college. 'We take pride and pleasure in sharing this historic development with all teaching and non-teaching staff,' the circular stated. 'We thank the State government for supporting the institution's growth and commitment to academic excellence.'
Welcoming the move, MLC and Government Whip in the Legislative Council Dr Kancharla Srikanth described the announcement as a key step in strengthening the educational landscape of the region. 'The students of Kuppam have been waiting for this opportunity for a long time,' he said, thanking CM Chandrababu Naidu and Human Resources Development Minister Nara Lokesh on behalf of the local community.
Leaders of the TDP and residents of Kuppam also hailed the decision, calling it a timely intervention that would bring quality technical education to the doorstep of meritorious students.

SC Cites 'Advisory' Role In Presidential Reference, Refuses To Set Aside Verdict On Timelines

The Supreme Court is hearing challenges to the Presidential Reference challenging its verdict to impose deadlines on the President and Governors on Bills passed by states. The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to set aside its April 12 verdict, where it imposed deadlines on President Droupadi Murmu and Governors to clear bills passed by states. A bench led by Chief Justice of India BR Gavai said the court would only act in an 'advisory" role and not sit in appeal. The court's decision to impose deadlines on the President and Governors had raised constitutional questions on whether the court can impose timelines for Governors and the President to deal with bills passed by state assemblies. The five-judge bench, comprising Justice Surya Kant, Justice Vikram Nath, Justice PS Narasimha and Justice A Chandurkar, heard preliminary objections raised by advocate KK Venugopal, appearing for the Kerala government, and advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, appearing for Tamil Nadu. The court said it was only sitting in an advisory jurisdiction and not sitting in appeal over the case involving Tamil Nadu's ruling DMK and Governor RN Ravi over withholding consent on Bills passed by the State Assembly. 'We will be expressing just a view of law, not on the decision in the Tamil Nadu case," said CJI Gavai in response to the objections by Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Discussions On Presidential Reference In April, the Supreme Court passed a verdict, saying the President should decide on the bills reserved for her consideration by the Governor within three months from the date on which such reference is received, calling Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi's decision to withhold Bills 'illegal". It also said that state governments can directly approach the Supreme Court if the President withholds assent on a bill sent by a Governor for consideration. This sparked questions over the jurisdiction of the judiciary over the executive. President Murmu exercised powers under Article 143(1) to know from the top court whether timelines could be imposed by judicial orders for the exercise of discretion by the President while dealing with the bills passed by state assemblies. In a five-page reference, President Murmu posed 14 questions to the Supreme Court and sought to know its opinion on powers of Governor and President under Articles 200 and 201 in dealing with bills passed by the state legislature. The governments of Kerala and Tamil Nadu argued that the questions raised in the Reference were substantially and directly answered by the judgment in the TN Governor case by the two-judge bench. They said President Murmu's reference under Article 143 cannot be invoked to revisit the issues already decided in a judgment. Venugopal said the presidential evidence was an attempt to derail the verdict without filing a review. This was supported by Singhvi, who said that Article 143 cannot be used as an intra-court appeal; nor is it a substitute for review or curative powers. Meanwhile, the Centre, in its written submission, has said that imposing fixed timelines on Governors and the President to act on bills passed by a state Assembly would amount to one organ of the government assuming powers not vested in it by the Constitution, and lead to 'constitutional disorder". Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Central government, supported the argument that the Supreme Court can revisit and even modify an earlier judgment while exercising Article 143. 'This is for the first time, the President felt functional disharmony arose and will arise because of no authoritative pronouncement," he said. 'There is a constitutional functional problem- how the governor and the President would act…the highest head of executive is seeking guidance, the judgments of five, three, and two have created a constitutional problem." The Court will resume hearing tomorrow. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive. CPI not qualified to talk on AIADMK-BJP alliance: EPS

Coming down strongly on Communist Party of India (CPI) State secretary R. Mutharasan's comments on the AIADMK-BJP alliance, Leader of the Opposition and AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Tuesday said that the CPI leader had no locus standi to talk about the NDA alliance in Tamil Nadu, as the DMK too had been in alliance with the saffron party in the 1999 general election and 2001 State Assembly poll. Mr. Palaniswami was reacting to Mr. Mutharasan's charge in Salem last week that the AIADMK leader had aligned with the BJP without consulting others in his party, prompting members to leave the party in recent weeks. Mr. Mutharasan was referring to former AIADMK leaders A. Anwhar Raajhaa and V. Maitreyan joining the DMK recently. 'Mr. Mutharasan (CPI) has no locus standi to talk about our alliance (AIADMK-BJP). What do the ruling DMK and Communist parties have in common in terms of ideology and principles to forge an alliance for polls?' he asked. Mr. Palaniswami said the Communist parties changed colour according to the political situation. But, the AIADMK's decisions were based on principles. In the 2021 Assembly polls, the AIADMK won 10 seats out of 11 seats in the Salem region despite fighting the election without an alliance,' he claimed Mr. Palaniswami was referring to the CPI State secretary's assertion that the AIADMK would be routed in Salem region, including Mr. Palaniswami's home turf of Edappadi constituency in the 2026 poll. Highlighting the steady increase in prices of essential commodities, the AIADMK leader blamed DMK president and Chief Minister M.K. Stalin for not taking effective steps to contain inflation. On the other hand, under his leadership, the AIADMK regime kept prices under control even during the pandemic (COVID-19) by creating a Price Stabilisation Fund. Essential commodities were brought from other States and sold at lower prices to meet the demand in Tamil Nadu. This helped contain the rising prices. 'The DMK is only good at bringing down the curtains on good initiatives like Amma clinics launched by the AIADMK. They (DMK) closed 2,000 such clinics in Tamil Nadu, but once the AIADMK returns to power in 2026, 4,000 AMMA clinics will be opened,' he said.

Over 13 lakh poor families adopted under P4 'poverty elimination' programme: Andhra CM

Amaravati, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Tuesday said here that over 13 lakh poor families were adopted by affluent people under his 'poverty elimination' programme P4 or Public Private People Partnership . Over 13 lakh poor families adopted under P4 'poverty elimination' programme: Andhra CM Naidu launched the 'P4 Margadarsi - Bangaru Kutumbam' programme on March 30 in Amaravati. Under the scheme, 'affluent' individuals who volunteer to support economically weaker families are termed 'margadarsis' , while the beneficiaries are referred to as 'bangaru kutumbam' . The programme envisages the top 10 per cent of society adopting the bottom 20 per cent to guide and mentor them 'out of poverty'. "Over 13 lakh Bangaru Kutumbams were adopted by 1.41 lakh Margadarsis. My target was 15 lakh," said Naidu, addressing a P4 programme in Mangalagiri. According to the CM, P4 is being launched 'officially' on Tuesday. After the Ugadi day launch on March 30, the 'poverty elimination' programme has been promoted till now, he said. "This is a historic day. A day which will remain in history forever," said Naidu, adding that 'poverty elimination' is not a new concept, as it was the philosophy of TDP founder NT Rama Rao. Appealing to everyone to go ahead with humanity, Naidu gave a call to everyone with the power to give back to society to go ahead and do it, financially or in whichever way possible. Under P4, he said some 'Margadarsis' have come forward to do community works, while some NRIs stepped in to adopt 10 poor families each. Likewise, he said some 'Margadarsis' are adopting entire villages and mandals. He said a survey was undertaken under P4 to map needy families in the southern state, outlining that out of 1.69 crore households across the state, 26 lakh needy families were identified. Going forward, the TDP supremo said the government will evaluate P4 programme to identify the best performing 'Margadarsis' and 'Bangaru Kutumbams'. According to the CM, P4 is a completely voluntary programme without any coercion and added that it is one programme which gives immense satisfaction. On his part, Naidu reminded that he adopted 250 families in Kuppam and promised to personally monitor them. Further, he underscored that any government policy will be favourable to the poor and observed that in all his programmes, he involves the donors and beneficiaries to inspire more people towards P4.
