Baghel visits site hit by tree felling for coal mine in Raigarh

Time of India6 hours ago
Raipur: AICC General Secretary and former Chhattisgarh Chief minister
Bhupesh Baghel
, along with over 20 Congress MLAs, visited Tamnar in Raigarh district to assess concerns over large-scale tree felling in the region, linked to a coal mine project of a private mining operator.
During the visit, Baghel met villagers who claimed to face police action while protesting the environmental impact of the project.
Baghel expressed concern over the manner in which the state's natural resources—such as land, forests, water, and minerals—were being made available for industrial use. He alleged that deforestation activities were carried out under pressure, without the consent of local gram sabhas.
He also raised issues related to the treatment of tribal residents protesting the project.
He pointed out that extensive tree felling began during the previous BJP-led state govt's tenure and that the current administration continued the trend. Referring to the Hasdeo Aranya region, Baghel claimed more than 50,000 trees were already cut.
Citing official communication, he mentioned a letter dated Oct 31, 2022, from the state's Forest Department requesting the Centre to halt coal mining activities in the Parsa block and to withdraw tree felling proposals. He added that the previous Congress govt passed a resolution in the Assembly urging cancellation of all coal blocks in ecologically sensitive areas, including Hasdeo Aranya.

‘From Op Midnight Hammer to Big, Beautiful Bill': Trump's fiery July 4th speech rocks nation

US President Donald Trump signed his package of tax breaks and spending cuts into law Friday in front of Fourth of July picnickers after his cajoling produced almost unanimous Republican support in Congress for the domestic priority that could cement his second-term legacy. Flanked by Republican legislators and members of his Cabinet, Trump signed the multitrillion-dollar legislation at a desk on the White House driveway, then banged down a gavel gifted to him by House Speaker Mike Johnson that was used during the bill's final passage Thursday. Donald Trump signs his tax and spending cut bill at the White House July 4 picnic

President Donald Trump signed his package of tax breaks and spending cuts into law Friday in front of Fourth of July picnickers after his cajoling produced almost unanimous Republican support in Congress for the domestic priority that could cement his second-term legacy. Flanked by Republican legislators and members of his Cabinet, Trump signed the multitrillion-dollar legislation at a desk on the White House driveway, then banged down a gavel gifted to him by House Speaker Mike Johnson that was used during the bill's final passage Thursday. Against odds that at times seemed improbable, Trump achieved his goal of celebrating a historic — and divisive — legislative victory in time for the nation's birthday, which also was his self-imposed deadline for Congress to send the legislation to his desk. Fighter jets and stealth bombers streaked through the sky over the annual White House Fourth of July picnic. 'America's winning, winning, winning like never before,' Trump said, noting last month's bombing campaign against Iran's nuclear program, which he said the flyover was meant to honor. 'Promises made, promises kept, and we've kept them.' The White House was hung with red, white and blue bunting for the Independence Day festivities. The U.S. Marine Band played patriotic marches — and, in a typical Trumpian touch, tunes by 1980s pop icons Chaka Khan and Huey Lewis. There were three separate flyovers. Trump spoke for a relatively brief 22 minutes before signing the bill, but was clearly energized as the legislation's passage topped a recent winning streak for his administration. That included the Iran campaign and a series of U.S. Supreme Court rulingshe's fought for. The budget legislation is the president's highest-profile win yet. It includes key campaign pledges like no tax on tips or Social Security income. Trump, who spent an unusual amount of time thanking individual Republican lawmakers who shepherded the measure through Congress, contended 'our country is going to be a rocket ship, economically,' because of the legislation.

Izz al-Din al-Haddad is Hamas' new de facto chief in Gaza

As the US presses for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, the militant group's decision will largely hinge on its new de facto chief in the Gaza Strip. The commander, Izz al-Din al-Haddad, took over the military wing in Gaza after Israeli forces killed Mohammed Sinwar, according to a senior Middle Eastern intelligence official and three Israeli defence officials. On Thursday, Brig Gen Effie Defrin, the Israeli military's spokesperson, said that al-Haddad was Hamas' new chief. Al-Haddad, who is in his mid-50s, helped plan the Hamas-led attack on Oct 7, 2023, the officials said. He is believed to be in firm opposition to Israeli efforts to dislodge Hamas from power, suggesting that he could block any push to release all remaining hostages before an end to the war in Gaza and a withdrawal of Israeli troops. Al-Haddad is thought to be based in Gaza City, his hometown. He is believed to have said in recent weeks that he will either achieve an "honorable deal" to end the war with Israel or else the war will become "a war of liberation or a war of martyrdom," the Middle Eastern intelligence official said. Since the Oct 7 attack, al-Haddad has been the only senior Hamas commander to give an on-the-record interview, appearing in an Al Jazeera documentary that aired in Jan.
