Hypercar, hyper-price: Corvette ZR1X brings the thunder for over $200k

Miami Herald2 days ago
The Chevy Corvette ZR1X hypercar is all about the numbers. Zero-to-60 in less than two seconds, 233 mph top speed, 1,250 horsepower, 6.49.3-minute lap time around the 12.9-mile Nürburgring circuit in Germany.
Now we know the number that will allow you access to those performance numbers.
The ZR1X will start at $207,395 for the standard 1LZ coupe, making it the first Corvette to list at over 200 grand. A special edition Quail Silver Limited Edition will launch at $241,395 and be previewed at the Quail Motorsports Gathering in California on Friday, Aug. 15.
The all-wheel-drive, hybrid-electric ZR1X and its sister, rear-wheel-drive, 1,064-horsepower ZR1 are the top-drawer models of an eighth-generation Corvette lineup that begins with the 495-horsepower, 6.2-liter V8-powered Corvette Stingray priced at $70,195. Two other models are available: the road-focused, hybrid E-Ray at $108,795 and the track-focused Z06 stuffed with the C8.R race-car's high-revving, 5.5-liter V-8 starting at $116,995.
The ZR1X's nosebleed price is still a fraction of comparable European hyper exotics like the $3.7 million, 1,184-horsepower Ferrari F80 and $2.1 million, 1,258-horsepower McLaren W1 - not to mention the $2.7 million Mercedes AMG One hypercar that owns the Nürburgring lap record at 6.29.0 minutes. It is also about $120k cheaper than Ford's Mustang GTD supercar, which starts at $327,960 (the Mustang ran the Nürburgring in 6.52.1 minutes).
In this supercar age of insane numbers, hypercar is defined as an all-wheel-drive sportscar making in excess of 1,000 horses.
The ZR1X's Nürburgring time, set by Corvette engineer Drew Cattell, is the fastest lap produced by an American-made auto and the fastest lap recorded by a non-pro driver.
Other ZR1X model pricing includes $217,395 for the 1LZ hardtop convertible. The ZR1X 3LZ coupe will start with an MSRP of $218,395 for the 3LZ coupe, and the 3LZ convertible at $228,395.
In an indication of the ZR1X's play for exotic car buyers, the Quail Silver Limited Edition will be shown at the exclusive Quail Lodge & Golf Club in Carmel, California during Monterey Car Week on Friday, Aug. 15 - a long way from the next day's Woodward Dream Cruise, where hundreds of Corvette owners will cruise Motown's main street. The McLaren W1 hypercar is also making its debut at Monterey Car Week.
The Quail Silver Limited Edition - exclusively available on the ZR1X 3LZ convertible - is a showcase for material finery including Blade Silver Matte, Corvette's first production matte finish since the 1960s. The color was inspired by the first-generation, 1957-59 Corvette's Inca Silver paint color.
"Corvettes are the pride and joy of their owners - they honor its craftmanship and design as much as its engineering excellence," said Scott Bell, vice president of Global Chevrolet. "The ZR1X Quail Silver Limited Edition presents a highly exclusive option for Corvette customers looking for a collectible item."
A "Limited Edition" plaque is included along the interior waterfall speaker, complete with build number.
The interior is dressed in what Chevy calls Sky Cool & Medium Ash Gray with Habanero accents - a new color scheme available for all 2026 Corvette models. Other Quail Edition highlights include orange brake calipers, black exhaust tips and carbon-black mirrors.
Under the skin, the limited-edition model shares the same steroid-fed drivetrain as other ZR1X models. The hypercar is essentially a combination of the technologies found on other C8 'Vettes: all-wheel-drive and front electric motor from the E-Ray; 5.5-liter, dual-overhead-cam engine from the Z06 amidships; twin-turbochargers like the ZR1; updated 2026 interior with more efficient, high-tech console. The result is a stratospheric 1,250 horsepower and neck-snapping acceleration for occupants coddled by a luxury interior.
Production of the hypercar begins later this year at Corvette's assembly plant in Bowling Green, Kentucky.

Ford Keeps Delaying Its Next-Gen Electric Truck and Van as It Readies 'Breakthrough' EV Announcement

Ford has delayed its next-generation electric pickup truck and electric van to 2028. This is the latest in a string of postponements for these two models, which were originally supposed to enter production in 2025. Ford is instead shifting its focus to a new EV platform for smaller, more affordable vehicles, with an announcement about these plans expected on Monday, Aug. 11. Ford plans to reveal a new EV strategy on Monday, August 11, that will center around a new "breakthrough" EV platform, something that CEO Jim Farley is describing as a "Model T moment." But before we get to see what Ford is cooking up, a report from Automotive News states that Ford is delaying two of its other upcoming EVs, an electric full-size pickup truck and an electric van, to 2028. This isn't the first time these vehicles have been pushed back. The electric truck, codenamed "T3" and expected to be a follow-up to the F-150 Lightning, was originally supposed to start production in 2025 before being pushed back to 2026 and then to 2027. Now, Ford has told suppliers that production of the truck won't start at its BlueOval City factory in Tennessee until 2028. The electric van, which is likely a next-generation E-Transit, was initially due by the middle of this decade, Ford said in 2024, before the start of production was shifted to 2026. Now the van, which will be built in Ford's Ohio Assembly Plant in Avon Lake, Ohio, has also been postponed until 2028. Ford confirmed the delays in a statement to Car and Driver. "We communicated timing adjustments for our next-gen electric van and electric full-size pickup to our suppliers and employees in June," a spokesperson said. "F-150 Lightning, America's best-selling electric truck, and E-Transit continue to meet today's customer needs." Ford also said that it plans to start building prototypes for the T3 truck in 2027, and it has previously stated that the plant in Stanton, Tennessee, has a capacity of up to 500,000 trucks per year. Not much is known about the electric truck or van, but both are expected to be built around dedicated EV platforms, freed from the shackles of their gas-powered counterparts. While the T3 pickup and electric van are still on the way, Ford is reportedly shifting its attention to a new affordable EV platform designed for more compact vehicles. This new platform is expected to underpin several models, including a small pickup truck due out in 2027. This low-cost EV architecture is expected to be the central focus of Ford's forthcoming announcement, so check back then for more details on the brand's big EV plans. Ford further pushes out production of 2 EVs to focus on affordability

Ford Motor Co. is extending its delay in launching two next-generation electric vehicles as the Dearborn-based automaker continues its focus on smaller and more affordable models that deliver profits, the company said. Ford informed suppliers and employees in June that a full-size electric pickup, which is to be the successor to the F-150 Lightning, will be delayed to 2028, a company spokesman told the Detroit Free Press on Aug. 8. That's a delay of a few months longer than the initial delay set for late 2027. Prototypes for that vehicle will still launch in 2027. Ford plans to make that vehicle at its BlueOval City Assembly Plant in Tennessee. Additionally, Ford is delaying production of its E-transit van, to be built at its Ohio Assembly Plant in Avon Lake, Ohio, from 2026 to 2028. 'F-150 Lightning, America's best-selling electric truck, and E-Transit continue to meet today's customer needs," Ford spokesman Ian Thibodeau said in a statement. "We remain focused on delivering our Ford+ plan and will be nimble in adjusting our product launch timing to meet market needs and customer demand while targeting improved profitability.' Ford's EV lineup consists of the Mustang Mach-E, F-150 Lightning and E-Transit EV. The company is expected to make a big announcement on Aug. 11 at its plant in Louisville, Kentucky, outlining a future EV strategy. CEO Jim Farley has teased the announcement as being "a Model T moment" for the company, a reference to Ford's historic early car that helped build the 120-year company into a mass-market carmaker. Ford, which leads the industry in recalls, has yet to make money on its EV sales. In fact, Ford has projected it will lose up to $5.5 billion in its EV and software operations for 2025. In the second quarter, Ford reported its Model e electric vehicle unit lost $1.3 billion in the quarter, a wider loss than the $1.1 billion it lost in the year-ago period. Farley has said Ford needs to look at the Chinese car companies as its main competitors going forward in the EV space. As the Free Press reported in June, Farley and Ford's executive leadership team went to China earlier this year with an agenda: to study every aspect of how Chinese auto companies operate, then apply those lessons across Ford in its other markets. That's because Chinese automakers have been driving down costs on EV production, selling high-quality, well-designed EVs at affordable prices in Europe and Asia. Ford and other automakers are now focused on also producing lower-cost, smaller EV models using cheaper-to-make batteries that sit on a streamlined platform. The Detroit Free Press first reported Ford's initial move to delay the EV launches in August 2024. Ford said at that time that it is changing its EV strategy, canceling plans for an all-electric three-row SUV and delaying the launch of a full-size EV pickup. At that time Ford said it was making those changes so that it could prioritize the introduction of a new, all-electric commercial van in 2026 (now delayed to 2028). Then, a more affordable mid-sized EV pickup and the full-size pickup would launch in 2027 — an initial delay of about 18 months from the original plans. Jamie L.
