Archer & Cartwright seal vital Brave win over Fire in Hundred campaign

London, Aug 20 (UNI) Southern Brave revived their Hundred campaign after three straight defeats with a crucial four-run win over Welsh Fire at Sophia Gardens here today.
The game was in the balance, with Fire needing 16 from the last 10 balls, but Tom Kohler-Cadmore was caught off James Coles for 25 to dent the hosts' hopes.
Matt Henry then needed a six from the final ball to win but only managed a single as Chris Jordan held his nerve, with Fire finishing 125-8 and Jofra Archer taking 3-20.
Hilton Cartwright's unbeaten 51 off just 19 balls proved the difference after Brave's innings had been floundering at 71-5 from 71 balls when he came in at number seven.
Cartwright pummelled five sixes in his knock as Brave recovered to 129-8 on a slow surface against Fire, whose hopes of qualifying for the knockouts are all-but over, with just one win from five matches.
Fire started positively with the ball as New Zealand seamer Matt Henry bowled the second-most economical spell in The Hundred men's compettion with 2-5 - Brave crawling to 18-1 after the powerplay.
James Vince's 29 was the only notable contribution from the top order as Chris Green and David Payne also took two wickets each for Fire.
In contrast, Fire made an explosive start with 46-3 from their first 25 balls as Jonny Bairstow started aggressively, whacking 22 from 10 balls before he was dismissed by Craig Overton.
Archer then removed Steve Smith for 13 before adding Luke Wells and Paul Walter to his tally as Fire's middle order buckled under the pressure.
The win takes Brave to third in the table while Fire remain bottom, according to a BBC news.

Zimbabwe's Asylum Seeker Tawanda Muyeye Dreams Of Playing International Cricket For England

The 24-year-old Muyeye, who fled Zimbabwe seven years ago, and plays as an opener for Kent in addition to the Hundred team Invincibles, eyes a national call-up in the near future. Oval Invincibles opener Tawanda Muyeye, who fled Zimbabwe as a teenager due to political unrest in the African nation and sought asylum in the United Kingdom, has been turning heads with his performances with the willow. The 24-year-old Muyeye, who plays as an opener for Kent in addition to the Hundred team Invincibles, anticipates a national call-up in the near future. 'I want to play international cricket. That is my goal and dream," Muyeye declared. Muyeye and his family fled the nation of his birth seven years ago, due to the unsettled political climate in the country, in order to make a better life in England. 'England has been good to us — my family and myself. I don't think there's any better place in the world to be than London in the summer," he said. Former England player and director of cricket at Kent county, Paul Downtown, took the youngster under his wing and served as his mentor. Muyeye acknowledged the important role Downtown played in his journey as a cricketer. 'I always say that I owe so much to him and to Kent," Muyeye says. Muyeye also revealed that cricket wasn't always his first calling as he tried his hand at multiple other sports alongside his pals growing up. 'I wanted to give up cricket when I was maybe 15. Loads of my mates played other sports and cricket was just getting a bit boring for me." However, he stuck to the willow and his abilities caught the attention of Oval Invincibles's coach Tom Moody, who opted to give him an opening role at the side partnering English international Will Jacks. Muyeye has played a part in five games thusfar in the campaign and has tallied 124 runs including a fifty, after having been used as a sporadic back-up batter for the side last season. 'Any time a coach backs you, it gives you confidence and allows you to be yourself," Muyeye reflected. 'The backing I've gotten here has been second to none," he reiterated. Muyeye is patiently waiting for the immigration protocols to fall in place in order to get a permanent residency permit to live in the United Kingdom. 'The end goal is to try to play international cricket. I want to expose myself to as much cricket as possible, in as many conditions as possible," he concluded. view comments First Published: August 21, 2025, 15:40 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Punjab to build 13,000 rural sports grounds to nurture Olympic talent

Chandigarh, Aug 21 (UNI) To empower budding athletes in Punjab and help them compete at the Olympic and international levels, Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has unveiled an ambitious plan to establish 13,000 modern rural sports grounds across the state. Punjab's Rural Development and Panchayats Minister, Tarunpreet Singh Sond, shared that construction work on 3,073 sports grounds in rural villages has already begun as part of the first phase of the project. Sond pointed out that no significant steps had been taken in the past to develop sports infrastructure or ensure the holistic growth of youth. He said that developing sports grounds in rural areas will foster a strong sporting culture, steer youngsters away from drugs, and channel their energy in a positive direction. Highlighting the government's ongoing anti-drug campaign 'Yudh Nashiyan Virudh,' the Minister said Punjab is already witnessing a positive transformation. Once these sports facilities are fully operational, he expressed confidence that the youth will permanently shun drugs. Reiterating the state government's commitment, Sond said efforts are being made to provide both employment opportunities and world-class sports facilities to the youth. Promising international exposure, he announced that renowned sportspersons who have represented India globally will be appointed as coaches to train emerging talent. Notably, Punjab is the first state in the country to offer financial assistance to athletes even before they participate in international competitions, a move that has already yielded promising results. With the development of rural sports grounds, Punjab is now poised to achieve new milestones on the national and international sports map. UNI XC AAB

‘Remind Me When I Was Dismissed By Him?': Steve Smith's Old Tweet Resurfaces As Jofra Archer Finally Dismisses Him In The Hundred

Back in the build-up to the Ashes 2023, Steve Smith famously dismissed the notion that Jofra Archer had ever troubled him. When reminded of Archer's fiery spells during the 2019 Ashes, Smith cheekily responded on social media: 'Terrorised? Reminds me of when I was dismissed by him…' At that point, Smith was correct. Despite Archer's pace and hostility, the England fast bowler had never taken his wicket in international cricket. Archer Breaks the Deadlock Fast forward two years, and the script has flipped. Playing in The Hundred 2025, Jofra Archer finally dismissed Steve Smith, marking the first time the Australian great has fallen to him in professional cricket. This was the first time Jofra Archer dismissed Steve Smith in T20s, although it wasn't his maiden breakthrough against the Australian star. Archer had already claimed Smith's wicket in the third ODI at Durham last year, removing him for a well-set 60. However, in the Test arena, Smith remains untouched by Archer's pace. With the English quicks recently returning to the Test side after four years during the India series, their much-anticipated duel is set to resume later this year in the Ashes. JOFRA ARCHER GETS STEVE SMITH __#TheHundred | #RoadToTheEliminator — The Hundred (@thehundred) August 20, 2025 A Rivalry Built on Ashes: History The Archer-Smith battle dates back to the 2019 Ashes, when Archer famously struck Smith on the neck with a fiery bouncer at Lord's, forcing him to retire hurt. Though Archer's pace unsettled him, Smith returned later in the series to dominate, ending as the highest run-scorer, while still never being dismissed by Archer. That narrative became a talking point ahead of the 2023 series, with Smith using it as a reminder of his dominance. With the Ashes 2025-26 on the horizon, fans will be eagerly waiting to see if Archer can repeat the feat in the longer format, and whether Smith can silence the chatter once again.
