Manchester United are set to take on West Ham United in their next Premier League assignment. The match will be played at the iconic Old Trafford in Manchester on Sunday, May 11, with the kick-off scheduled at 6:45 IST. With only three matches in hand, Manchester United find themselves in 15th place in the league standings. They have managed only 10 wins and nine draws in 35 games so far this season. Though they are already out of contention to earn European qualification, the Red Devils will look to make the most out of their remaining games and wrap up the domestic campaign on a positive note.
Despite their dominant run in the Europa League, Manchester United have struggled to showcase their A-game in the Premier League this term. They narrowly missed out on three points in the last fixture, ending a 3-4 defeat to Brentford. Mason Mount struck early in the first half to put United in front. Brentford pulled off a commendable comeback to make it 4-1 in the 74th minute. Alejandro Garnacho and Amad Diallo scored for Manchester United late in the second half, but were unable to turn the tables.
Meanwhile, West Ham played out a 1-1 draw in their last Premier League outing with Tottenham Hotspur. Both teams opened the scoring in the first half, but defenders dominated the rest of the game. West Ham now remain just outside the relegation zone, having accumulated 37 points.

Roma not aiming for Serie A title 'but you never know', says Gasperini

Gian Piero Gasperini said Tuesday he does not expect Roma can challenge for the Serie A title in his first season after leaving Atalanta "but you never know". The 67-year-old has replaced local hero Claudio Ranieri in the Roma dugout and is gunning for a first top-four finish since 2018. "Our best result would be Champions League qualification. Right now Roma can't win the Scudetto but you never know," Gasperini told reporters. "My goal is to make this team better... create a strong core group of players who can give us consistency, and form the basis into which the following season you can add more players who raise the level. That's the first thing I'm aiming for." Gasperini turned Bergamo club Atalanta from provincial also-rans in the shadow of the Milan giants down the road to one of Italy's best teams and even Europa League winners last year. He signed a three-year contract with Roma, one of Italy's biggest clubs with a large and passionate support but who have only won Serie A three times, the last coming exactly 24 years ago on Tuesday. They have been overtaken by fierce rivals Napoli whose recent Scudetto triumph took their tally to four, and two in the past three seasons. Roma finished fifth last season and missed out on the Champions League on the final day of the campaign after Ranieri came out of retirement to drag them away from near the relegation places. Gasperini chose Roma over Juventus who tried to convince him to move to Turin after failing to snatch club icon Antonio Conte from Napoli. Ranieri will work alongside Gasperini and Roma's American owners the Friedkin Group, and he confirmed to reporters that sporting director Florent Ghisolfi will be replaced. "The club is assessing a few names, you will know as soon as possible the next sporting director," said Ranieri. Gasperini is a spiky character prone to angry outbursts at journalists and he will have to deal with both an expectant, highly-strung fan base and an intense media environment in the Italian capital. There are a slew of radio stations, websites and even a daily newspaper entirely dedicated to Roma, which have caused bust-ups with previous coaches and can create enormous pressure if results are not good. "Ever since I arrived people have been warning me about the atmosphere here in Rome, that it's a difficult place to obtain yor goals, football-wise, for a whole different range of reasons," said Gasperini. "I believe that this should be a strength rather than a weakness. There are a lot of you, and then people talk about the radio stations and the pressure. "What I see is great enthusiasm, a great passion for football and a huge desire to reach certain goals. I think all that energy needs to be channelled in the right direction." Roma begin their first Serie A season under Gasperini with the visit of Bologna, currently scheduled for Sunday August 24, while the first Rome derby of the season comes in the fourth week of the campaign. td/ea JUVENTUS FOOTBALL CLUB

Soccer-FA charges referee Coote in relation to comments on Klopp

June 17 - Premier League referee David Coote was charged by the Football Association on Tuesday in relation to comments he made about former Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp in a video that went viral last year. Coote had been sacked by English soccer referees' body PGMOL after a video, recorded in July 2020, circulated on social media showing the official allegedly abusing Klopp and after a full investigation, his position was deemed untenable. "It's alleged that the referee acted in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting words contrary to FA Rule E3.1," the FA said in a statement. "It's further alleged that this constitutes an 'Aggravated Breach', which is defined in FA Rule E3.2, as it included a reference – whether express or implied – to nationality." Rule E3 deals with improper conduct that brings the game into disrepute, including insulting words or behaviour, while it also covers actions that question the integrity of match officials. In November, the FA said they were also investigating allegations that Coote had discussed booking a player the day before a game with a friend, which the referee denied. "No charges have been issued in relation to allegations of gambling misconduct against David Coote, which were also fully investigated," the FA added. Europe's soccer governing body also said Coote was banned from any UEFA refereeing activity until June 2026. The 42-year-old had apologised for his actions. The Sun also published a video which the newspaper said showed Coote appearing to snort white powder during his time working as a match official at Euro 2024.

Irish Club Excluded From Conference League Due To Non-Compliance With UEFA's Multi-Club Rules

The Court of Arbitration for Sport dismissed Drogheda United's appeal against their exclusion from the Conference League by UEFA, due to non-compliance with regulations on multi-club ownership. The League of Ireland club, which won the FAI Cup last season, is owned by Trivela Group, a multi-club football organization that also holds a majority stake in Danish side Silkeborg. Both clubs qualified for the upcoming Conference League, creating a conflict with UEFA's regulations. According to the rules, the higher-ranked team, Silkeborg, will stay in the competition. Drogheda received notification of their removal last week and subsequently appealed to CAS but will miss out on European football for the first time since 2013. Drogheda mentioned their significant efforts to collaborate with UEFA to make the necessary ownership and governance changes to allow both clubs to compete. They also pointed out that rule changes, in their view, were inconsistently communicated and enforced. CAS determined that the change in assessment date was properly communicated by UEFA and that the club should have been aware of the change. CAS also rejected Drogheda's claims of unequal treatment by UEFA. In a statement, the club expressed strong disagreement with the decision, stating they had hoped for fairness and common sense to prevail. They described the decision as unjust, asserting that rules should protect opportunity rather than prevent it, while also accepting responsibility and apologising. Last season, UEFA permitted Manchester City and Girona to compete in the Champions League and Manchester United and Nice to participate in the Europa League, noting that investors had made necessary changes to avoid conflicts with the regulations. UEFA's Club Financial Control Body (CFCB) is currently investigating FA Cup winners Crystal Palace's participation in the Europa League, due to majority owner John Textor's involvement with Olympique Lyonnais, who also qualified for the competition. Last month, CAS rejected an appeal by Club Leon after the Mexican club was removed from the Club World Cup by FIFA for failing to comply with multi-club ownership regulations.
