Manchester United advised to 'sign a proper goalkeeper' after Arsenal loss: 'It's going to be the difference...'
Manchester United began the 2025-26 season with a home defeat against Arsenal, thanks to a first-half error by goalkeeper Altay Bayindir that allowed Riccardo Calafiori to score the only goal of the match. Ruben Amorim has been advised to hand veteran goalkeeper Tom Heaton his first Premier League start in five years for Manchester United's next game, at Fulham, rather than persist with Altay Bayindir. Reuters Manchester United finds themselves in a spot of bother over their goalkeeper, with at Old Trafford proving costly for the team who are desperately eyeing a revival this season. The Turkish custodian's mishandling of a first-half corner allowed Riccardo Calafiori to score the only goal of the game, resulting in United starting the 2025-26 season with a home defeat. Ahead of their next league outing, at Fulham on Sunday, United manager Ruben Amorim will have to make a decision on continuing with Bayindir or bringing someone else between the sticks. And with Andre Onana sidelined due to injury, with his performance also under scrutiny, there's veteran goalkeeper Tom Heaton the Red Devils can fall back on. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Ex-United keeper urges Amorim to pick Heaton over Bayindir According to ex-United and West Brom goalkeeper Ben Foster, Heaton would be the right choice for the Portuguese coach for their first away game of the season, even if the 39-year-old hasn't played in the Premier League since 2020. 'This is a massive problem for the next game. It asks all sorts of questions and there's going to be so much talk surrounding it coming into that next game. Do you start with Bayindir, whose confidence will be low now after the first game? More from Football 'With Onana, people will be going, 'Well, he's not much better.' There's a lot of pressure. Tom Heaton, I would trust him to give me a six-and-a-half out of 10 performance,' Foster said on the Fozcast podcast. Also Read | Foster, who was primarily a reserve keeper for United during his years at Old Trafford 2005 to 2010, added that the 20-time top-flight champions needed to make at least one more purchase before the 1 September deadline for the summer transfer window – that of a goalkeeper, preferably Aston Villa's Emiliano Martinez or Paris Saint-Germain's Gianluigi Donnarumma. United have already on the forward trio of Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, and have acquired just one defender – Paraguay's Diego Leon for £7 million. 'It just forces Man United's hand to go and sign a proper goalkeeper. I think if you can get a Martinez or a Donnarumma, you've just got to do it. If you sign that player, it's going to be the difference between mid-table misery or really pushing for that top six,' Foster added. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD

Premier League clubs break window record: Transfer spending crosses £2.36 billion
The Premier League's transfer spending spree reached record levels with more than a week of trading to go as promoted Leeds United signed AC Milan forward Noah Okafor for a reported £18 million ($24.17 million) on Thursday. Okafor's arrival at Elland Road, following Bournemouth's signing of Amine Adli from Bayer Leverkusen, pushed the total spend beyond the £2.36 billion splashed out in the 2023 summer window, according to Several other big-money deals between now and the closing of the window, including the likely sale of Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace to Arsenal, mean spending by the world's most lucrative league could even hit £3 billion. While the list of big spenders is topped by the likes of champions Liverpool (£289 million), Chelsea (£246 million), Manchester United (£208 million) and Arsenal (£194 million), even clubs with smaller resources have been splashing the cash. Six clubs have broken their transfer records, including Liverpool paying £100 million, and another £16 million in add-on payments, to Bayer Leverkusen for Florian Wirtz. Burnley set a new club record by paying £25 million for Chelsea midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu while fellow promoted club Sunderland did the same by signing midfielder Habib Diarra for £26 million from Strasbourg, part of a £142 million squad-strengthening drive. Despite being outside the Premier League for eight seasons, Sunderland has spent more than any club in Europe's other top leagues apart from Spain's Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid. Nottingham Forest broke its transfer record twice during the current window in which it has spent almost £150 million, including the signings of Switzerland winger Dan Ndoye from Bologna and winger Omari Hutchison from Ipswich Town. Spending by England's Premier League this summer is more than that of Italy's Serie A, Germany's Bundesliga, France's Ligue 1 and Spain's LaLiga combined. Serie A is second on the spending list with around £783 million on player investment although the league's clubs have recouped more than that in sales. The Premier League's muscle in the transfer market is largely explained by huge broadcasting deals. This season is the first of a four-year domestic TV rights deal worth a record £6.7 billion.
