Robert De Niro, the Wise Guy at Cannes

Indian Express14-05-2025

By the time Robert De Niro arrived at the Cannes Film Festival in 1976, with Martin Scorsese's dark, unsettling Taxi Driver — which won the top prize that year — and Bernardo Bertolucci's 1900, a five-hour-long epic historical about Italy in the first half of the 20th century, he had behind him the weight of two roles of the kind that would, for a lesser actor, have been a career peak. To both Scorsese's Mean Streets (1973) and Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather: Part II (1974), he brought a magnetic, chameleon-like quality that marked him as one of the most exciting talents of the age. Over the next half-century, he became recognised as one of the undeniable greats. At Cannes this year, 49 years after he first came to the Croisette, De Niro was honoured with an honorary Palme d'Or for Lifetime Achievement.
Consider the filmography that followed Taxi Driver, in which he gave one of the most riveting performances of his career as the lonely, deeply paranoid Travis Bickle (the 'you talkin' to me?' scene might be the most popular audition choice for aspiring actors everywhere). From Jake LaMotte, the toxic, self-destructive boxer of Raging Bull (1980) to Rupert Pupkin, the delusional wannabe comedian of The King of Comedy (1982), from the cold, violent mobster, Jimmy the Gent, in Goodfellas (1990) to the sly, charming and utterly poisonous William King Hale in Killers of the Flower Moon (2023), De Niro has delivered performances that balance a deeply interiorised understanding of character with a captivating screen presence. Even when it seemed like he was simply playing a variation of the 'wise guy' or gangster, he has managed to make each character unique.
Many of these are also the result of association with like-minded artists, including Scorsese, with whom he has made 10 films, filmmaker Brian De Palma and actor Joe Pesci. The honouring of De Niro is thus also a celebration of cinema as the most collaborative of art forms.

Scarlett Johansson on the challenges of dating outside the industry: ‘Easy to create a lot of jealousy'

Hollywood star Scarlett Johansson has opened up about the complexities that can come with dating someone who isn't part of the entertainment world. In a candid conversation with Stranger Things and Thunderbolts actor David Harbour for Interview magazine, the Avengers star reflected on how being with someone outside the industry can bring unexpected challenges. 'I've had serious relationships with people that were not in the industry, and I found one of the challenges was that the person had no idea of what I needed to do my job,' she said. 'Obviously, if I was dating an oncologist, I wouldn't know what they needed to do for their job. But it's not so abstract,' the 40-year-old actor added. While Scarlett acknowledged that no profession is completely easy to understand from the outside, she pointed out that acting often brings unique pressures, especially when it comes to forming emotional connections on set. She suggested that the nature of her job—often requiring close bonds with co-stars—can become a point of friction for partners unfamiliar with the entertainment world. 'I also think it's easy to create a lot of jealousy when a person is not involved in the industry, because actors by nature are very free-spirited and they create very intimate relationships with people at work,' she explained. 'They can be loyal to a partner and also very engaged in all these other kinds of relationships, and I think it can be a blurry line for some people,' she added. Another source of tension, Scarlett noted, is how public-facing an actor's life can be. 'Also, to have a relationship with the public can be a complicated thing for people outside of the industry to understand,' she said. Scarlett shares her son Cosmo, 3, with current husband Colin Jost and daughter Rose, 10, with ex-husband Romain Dauriac. Her relationship history also includes previous marriages to art dealer Romain, whom she was with from 2014 to 2017, and actor Ryan Reynolds, whom she divorced in 2011. She and Colin, who exchanged vows in 2020, recently made an appearance at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival to support her directorial debut Eleanor the Great. On the acting front, she was recently seen in Wes Anderson's The Phoenician Scheme and is gearing up for her next release, Jurassic World Rebirth, which will release on July 2.

Karan Johar says the biggest issue of Bollywood is ‘herd mentality': Everybody wants to make horror comedies

Karan Johar thinks several people in the film industry are trying to emulate a success story to capitalise on the audience's interest and make their own films work. However, that is not going to work. In an interview with Bollywood Hungama, when Karan was asked what is currently the biggest issue that is plaguing Bollywood, Karan said it is 'herd mentality' and went on to explain his point. (Also read: Karan Johar says he wants his kids Yash and Roohi to be like Shah Rukh Khan's kids Aryan Khan, Suhana Khan: Here's why) During the interaction, Karan said, 'I think it is everybody grappling to do what others are doing. We see Pushpa running and catering so strongly to the tier-2 and tier-3 audiences, suddenly, we will see 20 others wanting to do the same. You see Chhaava working, everybody would want to make historicals. Stree and everybody wants to make horror comedies. Those worked because they were individually strong, and there was no other option in that genre. It was a unique thought that made those films work. ' He went on to add, 'We all need to have individual thoughts that are unique to ourselves. Someone asked me the other day, 'Do you have a universe?' I was like, 'As in?' They were like, 'A spy universe or a cop universe.' I was like, 'My universe is cinema itself.' I am not here to build universes, I am here to tell stories. In that story if there's a universe, then why not?' Karan was recently at the Cannes Film Festival for the premiere of his film Homebound, a film that was backed by his banner Dharma Productions. Directed by Neeraj Ghaywan, the film stars Ishaan Khatter, Vishal Jethwa and Janhvi Kapoor.
