On what should have been a jubilant day for Bengaluru, the atmosphere outside the iconic Chinnaswamy Stadium turned harrowing. A celebration of Royal Challengers Bengaluru's first Indian Premier League (IPL) title quickly spiraled into a nightmare. As the victorious team arrived in a bus on Wednesday evening, thousands of fans had gathered, waving team flags and chanting in euphoria. But the joy was short-lived — at least seven people were killed in a stampede that followed, as per TV reports. The visuals were chilling. A police officer was seen carrying a limp body to an ambulance. Another victim lay unconscious on the road as bystanders scrambled to help. A moment meant to honour sporting glory ended in trauma and loss, with many pointing to crowd mismanagement and a lack of preparedness for such a massive turnout.Sadly, this is not an isolated tragedy.Just three months ago, on February 15, New Delhi Railway Station witnessed a similar descent into chaos. Around 10 pm, platforms 13 and 14 were packed with more than 1,500 general ticket holders trying to board trains like the Prayagraj Express and Bhubaneswar Rajdhani. Overwhelming congestion, fainting spells, and panic led to a stampede-like situation that claimed 18 lives.Initial reports labelled it a stampede. The Railways later claimed it was 'only overcrowding.' But for families who lost loved ones in the crush of humanity, the terminology is cold comfort. Investigations pointed to a surge linked to the upcoming Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj — a pilgrimage known to draw tens of millions — but failed to explain how basic crowd management failed at one of India's busiest stations. And when it comes to the Maha Kumbh, tragedy has been a recurring visitor. In January 2025, during the Mauni Amavasya holy dip at the Sangam, a broken barricade on the overcrowded Akhara route triggered a deadly stampede. In the early hours between 1 and 2 AM, panic spread like wildfire. By the time order was restored, 30 were dead and over 60 injured. Despite advisories and emergency preparations, the weight of expectations—and people—proved too much once again. In July 2024, an even graver disaster unfolded in Uttar Pradesh's Hathras district. After a religious gathering addressed by preacher Saakar Vishwa Hari Bhole Baba, at least 116 people — mostly women and children — were crushed to death in a stampede. Survivors recounted a terrifying mix of poor infrastructure, blocked exits, and absolute pandemonium as the crowd surged, some seeking blessings, others simply trying to leave. In January 2022, at least 12 people died in a stampede at the Vaishno Devi shrine in Jammu and Kashmir after a huge crowd tried to enter the narrow shrine premises.Back in October 2013, around 115 devotees were killed and over a hundred injured at the Ratangarh temple in Madhya Pradesh during Navratri celebrations, when more than 150,000 people converged on the site.In February 2013, 36 pilgrims, mostly women, died in a stampede on the busiest day of the Kumbh Mela in Uttar Pradesh. The chaos began at the Allahabad railway station amid massive crowds. The list goes on...Across these incidents, a pattern emerges: inadequate planning, lack of exit routes, broken barricades, absent or ineffective crowd control, and above all, a failure to respect the scale of public emotion that drives thousands — sometimes lakhs — to congregate.Whether it's a cricket celebration, a railway rush, or a religious ritual, India continues to grapple with a grim truth — joy and devotion can turn deadly in the absence of foresight. Each tragedy leaves behind grieving families, unanswered questions, and a promise from authorities to investigate and improve.

4 Players Who Could Replace Virat Kohli At No. 4 Spot In Tests For India Against England: Karun Nair, Shubman Gill And...

photoDetails english 2912590 The Shubman Gill-led India will play a five-match Test series in England, starting June 20, 2025. During the all-important series, India will have to find an ideal batter for No. 4 spot as a replacement of batting stalwart Virat Kohli, who retired from Test cricket on May 12. Based on recent performances, domestic records, and suitability to English conditions, India have many talented batters, who could replace Kohli at No. 4 spot in the playing XI. Here are four players who could replace Kohli at No. 4 spot in the Indian Test team: Updated:Jun 07, 2025, 08:03 PM IST 1. Karun Nair 1 / 7 Karun Nair was rewarded for his prolific run in domestic cricket with a call-up in the India Test squad for the upcoming series against England. Karun, who is India's second triple-centurion after Virender Sehwag, has experience of batting in the middle order and he can be a strong contender to replace Virat Kohli at No. 4 spot in the Indian cricket team. The 33-year-old Nair recently hit a double hundred while playing for India A against England Lions in a four-day practice game in Canterbury. Karun Nair's Record In Test Cricket 2 / 7 Karun Nair has played just 6 Test matches for India so far, scoring 374 runs with an impressive average of 62.33 and strike rate of 73.91 so far. He has only one century to his name in Test cricket. However, it was the big one as he scored (303 not out) against England in 2016. 2. Shubman Gill 3 / 7 Shubman Gill has been named India's new captain in Test cricket ahead of the upcoming series against England. The 25-year-old Gill mostly batted at the top of the order or at number three in his Test career so far but he could take the big responsibility of replacing Virat Kohli at No. 4 spot in the Indian cricket team. Him moving to No. 4 spot could be a game changer moment for Gill and might elevate his Test career. Shubman Gill's Record In Test Cricket 4 / 7 Shubman Gill has scored 1893 runs in 32 Test matches with an average of 35.05 and strike rate of 59.92 so far. He has 5 centuries and 7 fifties to his name in Test cricket so far. 3. Sai Sudharsan 5 / 7 Sai Sudharsan has got his maiden call-up in India's Test squad for the upcoming series against England after his strong performances during the India A tour of Australia late last year and back to back impressive IPL seasons. Sudharsan, who made his international debut in the ODI format against South Africa in 2023, has a compact technique and strong temperament, which prompted selectors to give up a Test call-up. He can be a good contender to replace Virat Kohli at No. 4 spot in the Indian cricket team. The 23-year-old Sudharsan won the Orange Cap in the recently-concluded IPL 2025 after scoring 759 runs for Gujarat Titans in 15 matches. 4. Dhruv Jurel 6 / 7 Young wicket-keeper batter Dhruv Jurel has played only a few matches for India in Test cricket so far. However, he has impressed everyone with his remarkable temperament under pressure, particularly in his ability to stabilise innings and bat with the tail. The likes of Ravi Shastri and Ravichandran Ashwin have praised Jurel for his composure, shot selection, and ability to adapt to tough situations. Jurel is also very technically solid as a batter, which makes him a good candidate to replace Virat Kohli at No. 4 spot in the Indian cricket team. Dhruv Jurel's Record In Test Cricket 7 / 7 Dhruv Jurel has scored 202 runs in 54 Test matches with an average of 40.40 and strike rate of 53.15 so far. He has one half-century to his name in Test cricket so far.

Stadium stampede: Karnataka Congress appears to be in panic mode after high command pulls up both CM, Dy. CM

The ruling Congress in Karnataka appears to be in a panic mode after a stampede claimed the lives of 11 cricket fans outside Bengaluru's M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on June 4, a day after the stupendous victory of Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the Indian Premier League that sent fans into raptures. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, who took a lead in the celebrations, have taken drastic actions, including suspending Bengaluru Police Commissioner B. Dayananda, and dismissing K. Govindaraju, MLC, from the post of political secretary to the Chief Minister. This was apparently after the Congress high command took the government to task for its 'mishandling of the ground situation'. Multiple sources in the Congress told The Hindu that the party's central leaders spoke to Mr. Siddaramaiah and Mr. Shivakumar, who is also the KPCC president, and pulled up both leaders for allowing the celebrations without adhering to any norms. Multiple leaders call Embarrassed over the tragic turn of events during the RCB's victory celebration, Congress central leaders, including AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, AICC general secretary in-charge of Karnataka Randeep Singh Surjewala, and AICC general (organisation) and MP K.C. Venugopal, have reportedly spoken to the two top leaders and pointedly questioned the 'hurried celebrations'. Apparently, the party high command has summoned the State's two top leaders to New Delhi this week to explain the tragic events, sources said. It was only after the central leaders' nudge that the Siddaramaiah-led government appointed a one-man judicial commission headed by retired High Court judge John Michael D'Cunha to probe the incident and handed the case over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), even though a magisterial inquiry was already ordered on the same night, party sources said. They claimed that the presence of the Chief Minister's grandson and Minister Zameer Ahmed Khan's son on the Vidhana Soudha dais was another negative point. Mr. Shivakumar rushing to the HAL airport to welcome the victorious RCB team, holding the RCB flag, and trying to take the credit through a photo-op, and deciding to continue the celebration at the stadium even when deaths were reported, have not gone down well with the Congress establishment in Delhi, it is learnt. At Cabinet meeting Sources said during the State Cabinet meeting held on June 5 several Ministers expressed their dismay and demanded drastic actions against officials responsible for the tragedy. Yathindra Siddaramaiah, MLC and son of Mr. Siddaramaiah, also admitted that the government was under pressure to felicitate the team, but there were lapses in assessing the ground situation. Amid the ongoing power tussle between the top two leaders, both Mr. Siddaramaiah and Mr. Shivakumar seem to be trying to save their skin by laying the blame on somebody else's doorstep. In what appears to be a carefully crafted administrative move, Mr. Siddaramaiah has managed to hold on to officers loyal to him while turning the political heat on Mr. Shivakumar, who took the lead in the celebrations from the airport to the stadium, some party sources said. The political implications of the stampede and reshuffle of IPS officers appear to be significant, as both Mr. Siddaramaiah and Mr. Shivakumar are constantly locked in a game of one-upmanship, with the latter nursing his chief ministerial ambition. In the meanwhile, reports circulating regarding Chief Secretary Sahlini Rajneesh granting approval in the morning for the RCB celebration even before the final was played have emerged as another sore point.

Ricky Ponting supports Jasprit Bumrah exclusion, calls BCCI's decision ‘spot on': 'I think the timing is right...'

The BCCI selection committee's decision to name Shubman Gill as the captain ahead of the experienced Jasprit Bumrah, who even led India in two Tests during the recent Australia tour, did not sit well with many experts. However, former Australia captain Ricky Ponting jumped to the defence of the BCCI, saying that the decision was absolutely spot on and that the timing to bring in Gill couldn't have been better. The Test captaincy was Bumrah's for the taking, having led India thrice before, including twice in Australia in the last season, where India won in Perth in the absence of regular captain Rohit Sharma. However, a back injury in the Sydney Test, which later saw him miss the Champions Trophy, left the selectors concerned and subsequently dented his chances of taking over the reins in Test cricket. Speaking on the ICC Review, Ponting said BCCI was right in naming Gill as the captain because he felt India shouldn't have a captain who could be missing matches repeatedly due to injuries. He also urged the selectors to give Gill a lengthy rope as a captain. "I actually think it's the right move. I know there's a lot of other people out there, pundits out there saying they can't understand why it wasn't Bumrah and why they have gone to Shubman, but I think it's pretty simple," Ponting said. "Bumrah's injuries are holding him back a bit in the last couple of years and you don't want that with a captain. You can't have a captain coming in and missing games here and there. So I think it's the right decision. Now that they've made it, it's one they've got to stick with and give him a good crack at it for a long period of time." Having seen Gill from close quarters in IPL, where the youngster has been leading the Gujarat Titans squad since 2024, Ponting felt the timing to name him the Test captain couldn't have been better. "Even just looking back at the way he's handled this current GT team through this IPL, I think leadership sits really well with him," Ponting said. "And the important thing for me with leadership as well is if you're a batter and you're a captain, you have to be scoring runs. And Shubman is doing that in IPL and I think the timing is right. I think you'll have a good captain who'll make a lot of Test runs going forward."
