Liverpool Are Stepping Up Their Efforts To Land This Serie A Centre-Back: Should Slot Go For Him?

Yahoo19 hours ago
In a recent report, The Times (subscription required) revealed that Liverpool are stepping up their efforts to land Parma centre-back Giovanni Leoni this summer. It is believed that the Reds are eager to get a deal done for the Italian defender in this summer transfer window.
Leoni's Rapid Rise In Serie A
Leoni managed to shine with his performances at the centre of the Parma defence in the previous campaign. The Italian defensive ace featured in 17 senior matches for the Italian club last season, scoring one goal in the process across all fronts.
The 18-year-old was a solid presence on the defensive end of the field and deserves some credit for making 14 tackles, 20 blocks and 15 interceptions in Serie A. He even distributed possession relatively well based on his pass completion rate of 87.7% in top-flight football (stats via fbref.com).
Leoni is under contract at Parma until the summer of 2029. Thus, the Reds would have to make a decent offer if they want to lure the Italian centre-half to Anfield in this transfer period.

Should Liverpool Boss Arne Slot Go For Leoni?
Leoni is a solid tackler of the ball and can time his challenges well to earn the ball back for his team inside his half. He usually puts his foot through the ball when the opposition are on the front foot and can use his strong 1.96m frame to win his fair share of aerial duels on the defensive end of the field.
The Italian sensation mainly functions as a centre-back but can also fill in as a right-back if required. However, he is still quite raw and would need time to adjust to the high intensity of the Premier League if the Reds manage to bring him on board this summer.
Leoni would add more bite and steel to Liverpool boss Arne Slot's backline. He is good enough to serve as a useful squad player for the Merseyside club in the coming seasons.
At 18, Leoni has got a promising future ahead of him. He will also help the Reds challenge across all competitions in the future. Thus, Slot would be wise to go for a player of Leoni's potential before the end of this summer transfer window.

USMNT's Antonee Robinson will return ‘soon' but missing opening game, says Fulham coach

USMNT defender Antonee Robinson will return 'soon' from his knee injury but misses the start of the Premier League season, Fulham head coach Marco Silva has said. The 28-year-old underwent surgery on his right knee following the conclusion of 2024-25 and entered a rehabilitation period in an attempt to be ready for the start of this campaign. Advertisement Robinson did not feature in any of Fulham's pre-season games and missed the U.S. team's run to the final of the Gold Cup this summer, where they were defeated 2-1 by Mexico. 'We had a situation last season with Antonee Robinson and he is still recovering,' Fulham head coach Marco Silva said on Thursday ahead of his side's opening Premier League fixture at Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday. 'Soon you are going to see him in contention for the games but this weekend is too early.' Fulham will also be without Robinson's fellow left-back Ryan Sessegnon for the trip to the south-coast club. 'Ryan Sessegnon came out in the last game against Eintracht Frankfurt and we will see how he is,' Silva said. 'We've got another session tomorrow and that is when we will take a decision. 'Apart from these two, everyone else is in contention for Brighton.' Silva had said on Saturday, after his side's 1-0 friendly win over Eintracht Frankfurt, that Robinson was 'not ready' to feature and would 'take a little bit more time' to be match fit. Robinson made 36 Premier League appearances last season and recorded 10 assists, the most of any defensive player. He has made 189 appearances for Fulham since joining the club from Wigan Athletic in August 2020. Born in Milton Keynes, England, Robinson represents the U.S. internationally and has been capped 50 times, playing for the nation at the 2022 World Cup and the 2024 Copa America. Fulham have made just one signing this summer, bringing in 34-year-old backup goalkeeper Benjamin Lecomte, arriving from Montpellier for less than £500,000 ($672,908). 'As a manager you always want to improve your squad, it's not the ideal scenario we are in, we have been too passive,' Silva said. 'Of course I didn't expect it [to be like this] but this is the market. The only good thing thing is we haven't got many injuries as in terms of depth we are very short in some positions. 'I didn't expect us to be this passive, I knew what I wanted and the plan was there but it hasn't happened. Right now we need to reinforce.' () Spot the pattern. Roma working on loan deal for Manchester United's Jadon Sancho

Roma are working on a loan deal to sign Manchester United's Jadon Sancho. The Serie A side have made an offer for the England international but there is an acknowledgement that it would be a tricky deal to complete. Roma are also in talks to sign Aston Villa's Leon Bailey on loan as they look to add to their attacking options. Advertisement The Athletic reported on June 10 that Borussia Dortmund had expressed their interest to Sancho's representatives over a return to the club United paid £73million (now $98.9m) to sign him from in the summer of 2021. Sancho had options in England and around Europe that he was expected to explore before making a decision on his next step. His United contract runs until next June, with the option of a further year. The 25-year-old spent the 2024-25 season on loan at Chelsea, where he made 42 appearances. Chelsea's agreement with United last summer included an obligation to make the move permanent for £25m. The clause was triggered in April when it was mathematically guaranteed that Chelsea could not finish lower than 15th in the Premier League. However, Chelsea did not agree personal terms with Sancho and exercised the option to pay £5m to send him back to United. He scored five goals and provided ten assists during his time at Stamford Bridge, helping the side win the Conference League and finish fourth in the Premier League. Sancho was one of five United first-team players left out of their pre-season tour squad, alongside Marcus Rashford — who has since joined Barcelona on loan — Tyrell Malacia, Alejandro Garnacho and Antony. The group were asked not to report for training until after 5pm, after Ruben Amorim and the rest of the first-team group had left Carrington, earlier this summer. Sancho has played 83 games for United, with his last appearance for the club in the 2024 Community Shield against rivals Manchester City, when he came on as a substitute. He only made three appearances for United in 2023-24 after a public disagreement with then-head coach Erik ten Hag, resulting in him being excluded from the squad and re-join Dortmund on loan in January 2024. Roma finished fifth in Serie A last season and will play in the Europa League this term under new head coach Gian Piero Gasperini. Spot the pattern. 🎶 Pop predicts Premier League 25/26: Picture Parlour (Everton) 🔮

The new Premier League season is almost upon us and to celebrate, we have enlisted the help of some football-loving pop stars to preview and predict the coming campaign. Click here to read all of the interviews! Today we've got Katherine Parlour and Ella Risi from the band Picture Parlour, who are Everton fans! Hi Picture Parlour. What are you hoping to see from Everton in the 2025/26 Premier League season? To get into the top 8, especially with the new signing of Jack Greaslish, and the rest of the new arrivals. I also think the women could potentially win the league. Their new home at Goodison will bring them that extra bit of luck. What is your hottest take or boldest prediction for Everton's 2025/26 Premier League season? To qualify for Europe and hopefully win a trophy. Maybe the FA Cup like Crystal Palace did last season. If you were going to bet your life savings on something definitely happening to Everton in the 2025/26 season, what would it be? Stay in the Premier League, or I've only got £3.50 and the pies are £6.20. The whole club is going to improve with the new ground and new players. Other than your own, which team or player are you most excited to watch in the 2025/26 season? Definitely not the Reds! To see what Chelsea's Cole Palmer is going to achieve and to see how well our women's team does in their new ground at Goodison. What do you predict will be the first managerial change of the 2025/26 season? Tough one. Maybe the Leeds manager, Daniel Farke, or one of the other promoted clubs. Who will turn out to be Everton's signing of the summer? Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall. Who will finish as the Premier League's Player of the Season? Cole Palmer for Chelsea. Who will win the Golden Boot? Erling Haaland for Man City. Which club will win the Premier League title? Everton…. or Man City. Finally, which three clubs will be relegated? Leeds, Burnley, Sunderland. Picture Parlour's new track, Talk About It is out now. Follow them on Instagram here.
