Phil Simms loving Abdul Carter's embrace of Giants culture as rookie's number search continues

New York Post02-05-2025
Phil Simms and Lawrence Taylor retired together, and now the two Giants legends are together again at the center of rookie Abdul Carter's jersey number selection process.
Carter said Friday on X that it would be an 'honor' to wear Simms' No. 11 if it is unretired – a proposition that the Super Bowl-winning quarterback sounded OK with during his appearance on FanDuel TV.
But Simms didn't really think then that Carter would ask – and he's still not sure that the conversation will be had.

Reached by The Post and asked for his response to Carter's excited reaction, Simms appreciated that the rookie is respectful of Giants history.

Barry Switzer says the Cowboys' off-the-field activities were 'none of our business'

Barry Switzer says the Cowboys' off-the-field activities were 'none of our business' originally appeared on The Sporting News The last time the Dallas Cowboys won a Super Bowl was 30 years ago in 1995. By then, head coach Jimmy Johnson was gone, and so were his strict rules, so players ran amok. A perfect example of this is the Cowboys' infamous White House, where players would go to party. Former Cowboys great and Hall of Famer Michael Irvin talked about what took place in the 'White House.' Irvin was the 'president,' and he laughingly recalls the infamous house in the Netflix Cowboys docuseries America's Team: The Gambler and His Cowboys, which premieres today. 'We was like, 'Man, we spend a lot of money for these hotels, all of these women,' ' Irvin recalls. 'So then we said, 'Let's do a house.' ' There were not only women but drugs and plenty of alcohol as well, and while Irvin took his fill of all the dobouchy, a lot of his teammates missed Johnson because, unlike head coach Barry Switzer, who took over for Johnson that '95 season, he knew how to keep players like Irvin in line. Former safety James Washington recalls about Switzer: 'A lot of guys liked him because now the guys felt like they had freedom. Barry came into that locker room, the dynamic, the accountability, the work ethic — that had changed.' Switzer didn't think the players off the off-field activities were none of his business. He explained his philosophy when it came to his players. 'Those guys live on the edge,' the now-87-year-old says in the series. '[They're] supposed to be adult men, married, most of 'em. You know, really it was none of our business; they're adults.' Neither Troy Aikman nor Emmitt Smith liked that philosophy, and they've expressed how they felt about Switzer's handling of the team over the years. Especially, Aikman, who was not a fan of Switzer. 'It was a stark contrast to anything that had happened in the first five years,' Aikman recalls, while Johnson was head coach. 'I just remember thinking things are different, going forward.'

Jimmy Carter to be honored with Forever stamp

Former President Carter will be honored by the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) with a Forever stamp set to go on sale Oct. 1, which would have been his 101st birthday. 'The stamp program celebrates the best in American culture, places and people, and it is difficult to consider a more fitting honoree than former President Jimmy Carter,' Peter Pastre, the Postal Service's government relations and public policy vice president, said in a statement. 'In his support and leadership of his beloved community, state and nation, he lent his quiet, thoughtful and deliberate energy around causes he believed in, and most certainly in his conduct and accomplishments as a former president, Jimmy Carter truly personified the best in America,' the Postal Service official added. The stamp was designed by art director Ethel Kessler and will feature a 1982 oil-on-linen painting created as a life study by artist Herbert E. Abram, the USPS said. Carter was the country's longest-living former president before he died in December at age 100. World dignitaries gathered at his funeral to honor his contributions to the country and global diplomacy through the Camp David Accords and SALT II treaty. 'Jimmy Carter's friendship taught me, and through his life taught me, that strength of character is more than title or the power we hold. It's the strength to understand that everyone should be treated with dignity, respect,' former President Biden said during Carter's eulogy. 'That everyone, and I mean everyone, deserves an even shot. Not a guarantee, but just a shot,' he added. Carter, who hailed from Plains, Ga., spent decades dedicated to public service both nationally and abroad alongside his wife, former first lady Rosalynn Carter. 'The Carter family and the Friends of Jimmy Carter are honored to be able to take part in revealing the design for President Carter's Forever stamp,' Kim Carter Fuller, executive director of the Friends of Jimmy Carter, said in a statement after the stamp's design was unveiled. 'Together we've had the distinct privilege of a front row seat to his life and legacy, and today's reveal gives the world an opportunity to share his legacy with others on a daily basis.'

The new U.S. Open mixed doubles tournament begins with the defending champions showing how it's done

NEW YORK — The U.S. Open overhauled its mixed doubles tournament in hopes of drawing the top singles players. The defending champions don't intend to move out of the way so easily. Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori earned the first win in the tournament, beating the No. 2-seeded team of Taylor Fritz and Elena Rybakina 4-2, 4-2. Traditional doubles specialists like the Italian combo were among the biggest critics of the changes, with a format that feels more like an exhibition than one worthy of a Grand Slam trophy. The prize of $1 million to the winning team would be a huge boost to doubles players, but Errani and Vavassori are the only traditional doubles team in the event. 'We also are playing for all the doubles players who could not compete here, so we tried to do out best,' Vavassori said. Fritz, last year's U.S. Open runner-up in men's singles, and Rybakina, a past Wimbledon women's singles champion, are exactly the types of players the U.S. Tennis Association was seeking when it revamped the tournament. Now a 16-team event played over two days, the mixed doubles starts well before the singles tournaments begin, with organizers believing singles stars would be more interested in playing if it didn't interfere with their rest and recovery during that event. Errani and Vavassori didn't even know originally if they would get a chance to defend their title in the new format, which gives eight teams automatic spots based on the players' combined singles rankings. The other spots are wild cards awarded by the USTA. The Italians were given one of them and they showed off their skills in a victory that took just 42 minutes. The shortened format allows the matches to speed by, knowing winning teams would have to play twice on the first day to reach the semifinals and finals. The highlight match for the first-round schedule was to come in the afternoon, when Carlos Alcaraz and Emma Raducanu took on the top-seeded team of Jessica Pegula and Jack Draper.
