Giants Legend Phil Simms Gets honest on Hall of Fame Case

Giants Legend Phil Simms Gets honest on Hall of Fame Case originally appeared on Athlon Sports. As the New York Giants watch rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart's every move, optimism is rampant. One day, the fanbase hopes he can match the merits of the icons before him. Advertisement Two quarterbacks have separated themselves in the annals of Giants history: Phil Simms and Eli Manning. Neither, however, is enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. This recently came into view when Manning learned his first-ballot fate in February. His two Super Bowls (and corresponding Super Bowl MVPs) weren't quite enough to get into Canton. On Tuesday, Simms spoke about his own chances at enshrinement, joining Kay Adams on 'Up & Adams' about whether he should have had his day of celebration. "I never think about it," Simms told Adams. "I don't deserve to be in it. Maybe if I wouldn't have got hurt in some of my career, things like that. Maybe I should have got when they asked me to be the alternate for the Pro Bowl and they called me and I said, 'Man I'm not coming I've already turned that off' and whatever. So I probably could have been five (to) Pro Bowls, maybe all that would have helped." Advertisement Ultimately, Simms finished his career with two Super Bowls and two Pro Bowls. His 33,462 yards and 199 touchdowns both rank second in team history, behind Manning. Simms was the runner-up for Offensive Rookie of the Year and, in his last season, a down-ballot candidate for the league MVP. His success in between those campaigns was rarely dominant, something he shares with Manning. "I don't want to say I don't care,' Simms said. 'I don't deserve to be in, and I'm fine with that. Honestly, winning the damn Super Bowls, I got something out of all this." In East Rutherford, though, Simms is still celebrated. He's in the ring of honor and, as first-round edge rusher Abdul Carter knows, his No. 11 is retired. Advertisement Simms is a beloved member of the organization's past and has enjoyed a successful post-playing career. Canton isn't in the cards, but Super Bowl wins are forever, meaning he'll always have a place with the Giants. Abdul Carter's jersey number revealed: What digits will NY Giants rookie pass rusher wear?

EAST RUTHERFORD - Abdul Carter was denied by Lawrence Taylor in a pursuit of the iconic number he would have loved to wear in the NFL. The Giants' first-round pick was ready to accept an offer from another New York Giants legend before the family of Phil Simms vetoed a potential deal. Now Carter has taken the advice from Taylor, regarded as the greatest player in franchise history: the Penn State star is going to set out to bring the same level of respect to No. 51 that the best of the best Giants did with theirs. New York Giants Mandatory Credit: Thomas Salus-Imagn Images After Taylor rebuffed Carter's request to bring his No. 56 out of retirement with a challenge to pick a different number and make it his own, Simms opened the door by saying he would not be opposed, in turn piquing the interest of the Giants' third overall pick in the process last. In a subsequent phone call with and The Record, Simms was taken aback to learn that Carter was so in tune to the possibilities. Simms said his family and agent might take issue with any decision to let someone else wear No. 11 - and they did. Giants Rookie Linemen React to Meeting Michael Strahan

It is safe to say that New York Giants rookie edge Abdul Carter has found himself in conversations with franchise legends in the weeks since he was taken third overall in the 2025 NFL Draft. First, the greatest edge rusher in league history, Lawrence Taylor, told him that No. 56 would not be coming down from the rafters, that it would be on the rookie to earn his place in Giants history. Iconic quarterback Phil Simms joined Taylor, first expressing a willingness to unretire his No. 11 before revealing that his family had voted against it. Advertisement New York didn't wait long before giving Carter another taste of the organization's esteemed history. On Friday, Hall of Fame defensive lineman Michael Strahan spoke to the team during rookie camp. Both Carter and third-round defensive tackle Darius Alexander reacted to Strahan's rookie camp cameo at the ensuing press conference. 'Yeah, that's dope,' Carter said. 'Seeing somebody as legendary, somebody in the Giants organization coming back, giving back, giving us great advice. It's dope to see him here. 'I would just say just speaking about the Giants history, knowing how much we've (won), knowing the history, the championships we've (gotten) and I just want to be a part of bringing that legacy back. Just bringing that greatness back to New York.' Advertisement Carter and Alexander will play integral roles on the Giants defensive line. The first-round pick is an injection of blue-chip talent that units rarely receive, further amplifying edge rushers Brian Burns and Kayvon Thibodeaux. Adding both depth and potency to the unit shouldn't be overlooked, and it allows defensive coordinator Shane Bowen to be more creative up front. While Carter is the biggest young piece up front, the work would not be done without a starting-caliber tackle next to Dexter Lawrence. Alexander completes the unit. 'It was a great message just telling us to come in here, work hard and compete with each other and root for each other while we out there,' Alexander confirmed. 'So, it was a good speech. Just tell us about the tradition of the organization where we got to hold the standard here. So, it was wonderful. 'Definitely. It's definitely good seeing him here and just preaching to us what he learned when he was younger. So, it definitely was a good day for us, and it was good to have him here as well.' Advertisement New York's recent Super Bowl wins might have been headlined by clutch quarterback play, but they were built on talented, deep defensive lines that made elite offenses vulnerable. The Giants will enter the season with one of the league's most talented defensive lines. If they can make good on Strahan's advice, transcending those high expectations is more than possible. Giants (Temporarily) End Abdul Carter Number Saga

The biggest story of New York Giants edge rusher Abdul Carter's first few weeks in the NFL was getting told 'no' several times. First, it was Lawrence Taylor, who respectfully told Carter to get his own number and join him in the rafters. Phil Simms seemed a bit more willing to part with his No. 11, but was ultimately vetoed by his family. As such, Carter had to wait for offseason workouts to learn what number he'll be wearing. Advertisement The Giants' jersey announcement temporarily ended Carter's number saga on Friday. He'll be wearing No. 51, at least for now. New York unveiled the numbers for its 2025 NFL Draft class, albeit with the disclaimer that they are subject to change. Edge Rusher Abdul Carter – 51 Quarterback Jaxson Dart – 6 Defensive Tackle Darius Alexander – 91 Running Back Cam Skattebo – 44 Offensive Tackle Marcus Mbow – 71 Tight End Thomas Fidone II – 86 Cornerback Korie Black – 25 It seems to be coincidental that Carter received the 5 from Taylor's No. 56 and a 1 from Simms' No. 11. With only a handful of applicable numbers available, the drama has come to an anticlimactic conclusion. 'It was pretty much what we had available, so it was a good number,' he said, via the New York Post. Needless to say, Carter is focused on more important things as his transition to the league is underway. The team, with a surplus at edge rusher alongside Brian Burns and Kayvon Thibodeaux, will ask him to move around a bit, perhaps next to defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence inside or directly over the A gap as a mugging linebacker. Advertisement 'It's pretty much set. I'm just happy to be out here playing football. That's all I'm worried about.' While he won't be wearing Taylor's No. 56, the bar is set for Carter. As the No. 3 pick and plenty of talent around him, Carter will be tasked with living up to his blue-chip status immediately. Anything less will have his critics mocking the entire jersey ordeal in the first place. Giants first-round pick Abdul Carter chooses No. 51 after headline-making search

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Abdul Carter has tackled his first big task in the NFL — choosing a jersey number. After a search that made some headlines, the New York Giants' first-round pick is wearing No. 51 with the team, which took the field for the start of its rookie minicamp Friday. Carter said he'll wear the jersey number, which he chose because 'it was available,' moving forward but added it's 'going to have grow on me.' That came after Carter's request to wear the retired No. 56 of Lawrence Taylor was nixed by the Pro Football Hall of Famer, who was honored but urged the third overall pick of the draft to create a legacy with his own number. 'He has to be the player that he is,' Taylor told ESPN two weeks ago. 'He can't be another Lawrence Taylor. Well, he may be better than a Lawrence Taylor, who knows? But he has to make his mark. It's up to him.' Carter wore No. 11 at Penn State — but that number is also retired by the Giants in honor of quarterback Phil Simms. The two-time Super Bowl winner said during a recent interview with FanDuel that he was open to having Carter wear his No. 11, but Simms' family decided against it. So that had Carter still searching for a number, which was finally revealed along with those of the rest of the Giants rookies shortly before minicamp practice kicked off. ___ AP NFL:
