Chase Briscoe wins sixth NASCAR Cup pole of 2025 season at Iowa Speedway
On Saturday at Iowa Speedway, a 0.875-mile short track, Briscoe won his sixth pole of the season with a lap at 136.933 mph (23.004 seconds) to earn the top starting spot in Sunday's Iowa Corn 350 Powered by Ethanol (3:30 p.m. ET on USA, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio).
That effort followed a pole run last Saturday at mammoth 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway. In fact, in the last 11 NASCAR Cup Series qualifying sessions, Briscoe has put his car on the front row seven times with five Busch Light Pole Awards and a pair of second-place starts.
Briscoe, who has eight career poles, attributed his qualifying success to a burgeoning working relationship with crew chief James Small.
"I just feel that James and the engineers on the No.19 crew have done a really, really good job, especially these last two months, of understanding what I want and what I need out of the race car," Briscoe said.
"I've even kind of noticed a switch with James over the course of the last two or three weeks even, where it went from 'We've got to be doing this different' to 'We've got to get the car better for you now.'
"I think that came as they started to understand me more, and our performance has been better. James does such a great job of understanding what I need, especially on Saturdays for qualifying."
Briscoe edged William Byron (136.435 mph) for the top starting spot by 0.084 seconds. Kyle Larson, Byron's Hendrick Motorsport teammate, was third fastest at 136.429 mph.
Byron, Larson and teammate Chase Elliott, who qualified eighth, are locked in a tight battle for the Cup Series Regular Season Championship, with Elliott leading the series by four points over Byron and 15 over third-place Larson.
Austin Cindric (136.258 mph) qualified fourth in the fastest Ford, followed by Brad Keselowski and defending race winner Ryan Blaney.
Carson Hocevar, Elliott, AJ Allmendinger and Justin Haley secured positions seven through 10 on the grid.
Roush Fenway Keselowski Racing teammates Chris Buescher and Ryan Preece will start 27th and 33rd, respectively, as they battle for berth in the Cup Playoffs. Preece trails Buescher by 42 points in the race for what is currently the final spot.
Briscoe's Camry was the only Toyota in the top 10. Denny Hamlin, who scraped the Turn 1 wall during practice, was 11th fastest in the No. 11 JGR Toyota.
Kyle Busch crashed in Turn 1 on his 18th practice lap and damaged his No. 8 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet beyond repair. He'll start from the rear of the field in a backup car on Sunday.

Aug 3 (Reuters) - Canadian sensation Summer McIntosh fell just short in her quest to match Michael Phelps's feat of winning five individual gold medals at a single world championships but that has given her the motivation to improve even more. McIntosh won the 400 metres individual medley (IM) title on the final day of the world championships in Singapore on Sunday, adding to her 200 IM, 200 butterfly and 400 freestyle golds that saw her named the best female swimmer of the meeting. The three-times Olympic champion's only failure to stand atop the podium in an individual event came in the 800 freestyle, in which she finished with bronze as American great Katie Ledecky took the victory. "I think it was very obvious that my goal was five golds. Time just didn't matter. I just wanted to get my hand on the wall the first five times," McIntosh said of her campaign. "I fell short of that but I think it's just going to keep me hungry and push, and keep moving forward. "I think this meet, I learned more than any other meet ever. And that says a lot. The thing I'm learning from the most is the bronze and 800 freestyle. And that's going to keep me hungry moving into next season and into LA (Los Angeles Olympics)." McIntosh has plenty to be proud of, however, as she became just the third swimmer to win five individual medals at a world championships after Phelps and Swede Sarah Sjostrom. The 18-year-old, who also swam for Canada in the 4x100 medley relay on Sunday, said she had never had such a challenging programme, adding: "I've never done a double before, also doing five individual events. "I've never done that before, let alone one of them being the 800. My sleep has never been this good. I've never been a good sleeper during meets. I've been able to relax and have amazing sleep. "Overall, happy with my meet but always want more. I'm just going to celebrate my wins and kind of take a reset heading into next season. The negatives, I'm going to apply to next season."

Lynx acquire DiJonai Carrington in trade with Wings
August 3 - The Minnesota Lynx acquired guard DiJonai Carrington on Sunday from the Dallas Wings, sending forward Diamond Miller, guard Karlie Samuelson and a 2027 second-round draft pick in exchange. With the move, Carrington goes from the No. 11 team in the league in Dallas (8-21) to a franchise that is running away from the pack in the league standings. The Lynx (24-5) have a six-game lead on the second-place New York Liberty. Dallas acquired the 5-foot-11 Carrington on Feb. 2 from the Connecticut Sun, with whom she played four seasons. The move was part of a massive 10-team trade. In 20 games with the Wings, the 27-year-old averaged 10.4 points, 5.1 rebounds and 1.8 assists over 24.9 minutes per game. All are above her career averages of 8.5 points, 3.6 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 20.2 minutes per contest. She has appeared in 151 career games with Dallas and Connecticut. Carrington was named the WNBA's Most Improved Player in 2024 and also was selected to the league's All-Defensive first team. The Lynx selected Miller with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2023 WNBA Draft. She has averages of 7.1 points, 2.2 rebounds and 1.4 assists over 16.3 minutes over 78 career games. Samuelson was in her first season with Dallas after being acquired April 14 in a trade with the Washington Mystics. In 16 games this season, she averaged 3.3 points, 1.3 rebounds and 1.1 assists in 16.5 minutes per game. She is a career 39.2 percent shooter from 3-point territory.
