Many drink matcha for its rich grass-like taste, but others are drawn to the drink's nutritional properties.
The word matcha means 'ground tea' in Japanese and comes in the form of a vivid green powder that is whisked with hot water and can be added to milk to make a matcha latte.
Matcha is the new drink of choice at hip cafés worldwide, but Japanese producers are struggling to keep up with soaring demand for the powdered green tea.
Here's what you need to know about the drink beloved of weekend treat-seekers and 'wellness' influencers:
What is matcha?
The word matcha means 'ground tea' in Japanese and comes in the form of a vivid green powder that is whisked with hot water and can be added to milk to make a matcha latte.
Green tea was introduced to Japan from China in the early ninth century, and was first used for medicinal purposes
Matcha came much later, in the 16th century, Kyoto part of the tea ceremony tradition was developed by tea master Sen no Rikyu. Today, there are different grades of matcha quality, from 'ceremonial' to 'culinary' types used in baking.
How is it produced?
Matcha is made from leaves called 'tencha', which are grown in the shade in the final weeks before their harvest to concentrate the flavour, colour, and nutrients.
This 'requires the construction of a complex structure with poles and a roof to filter the light', explained Masahiro Okutomi, a tea producer in Sayama, northwest of Tokyo.
Tencha leaves, rich in chlorophyll and L-theanine, a compound known for its relaxing effects, are hand-picked and deveined, then steamed, dried, and ground between two stone mills to produce an ultra-fine powder.
It can take up to an hour to produce just 40 grams (1.4 ounces) of matcha, making the powder twice as expensive as standard green tea leaves.
What are its benefits?
Many drink matcha for its rich grass-like taste, but others are drawn to the drink's nutritional properties.
It is rich in antioxidants and can aid concentration because of its caffeine content: one cup contains, on average, 48 milligrams, slightly less than a drip coffee but nearly twice as much as a standardly brewed green tea.
'Matcha is often seen as being good for your health,' said Shigehito Nishikida, manager of Tokyo tea shop Jugetsudo.
'But people are also attracted to the Japanese culture around tea: the ritual, the time taken, the aesthetics,' he said.

Why is it so popular?
Japan produced 4 176 tonnes of matcha in 2023, a huge increase from the 1 430 tonnes in 2012.
More than half of the powder is exported, according to the agriculture ministry, mostly to the United States, Southeast Asia, Europe, Australia, and the Middle East.
Millions of videos on TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube demonstrate how to make photogenic matcha drinks or choose a traditional 'chasen' bamboo whisk.'
I feel like Gen Z really drove this enthusiasm for matcha, and they heavily relied on social media to do so,' Stevie Youssef, a 31-year-old marketing professional, told AFP at a matcha bar in Los Angeles.
Matcha can also be used in cooking, extending its appeal to others aside from tea lovers.'Some customers simply enjoy drinking it, others like preparing it themselves, and of course, many buy it as a gift. Japanese matcha is always appreciated,' said Jugetsudo's Nishikida.

Picture: On the 3rd of August 2018, a young law student at Rhodes University took her own life. Khensani Maseko, who was just 23 years old, had endured sexual violence at the hands of a fellow student. Her decision to take her own life came just days after she had reported the incident, which had occurred three months prior, to the authorities at the university. Unable to bear the pain, she travelled home to Johannesburg with her family to seek mental health support. On that cold August morning, she wrote on her Instagram page: 'No one deserves to be raped!', and just hours later, she would end her young life. Following her death, protests ignited across various South African universities, with students demanding greater investment in mental health support services. Earlier this year, on the 8th of January, Dr. Antoinette Candia-Bailey, who was serving as the Vice President for Student Affairs at Lincoln University in the state of Missouri in the United States, tragically took her own life after being subjected to bullying by the university's leadership. Like Khensani, Dr. Candia-Bailey had reported the struggles that she was battling with weeks prior, and just days before she ended her life, she had sent an email out to several people detailing her deteriorating mental health due to the toxic work environment she was forced to navigate. As with the case of Khensani, Dr. Candia-Bailey's untimely death resulted in protests and a national discussion on the treatment of Black women in academia. These two cases may have occurred in two different geographical contexts, at different times, and for different reasons. But there is a common denominator between them that cannot be ignored – two Black women, having endured traumatic events and feeling unsupported, opted to take their own lives. Both women were gifted, with Khensani having served in the Students' Representative Council of Rhodes University and Dr. Candia-Bailey having achieved significant feats in her journey as an academic administrator, including becoming the first Vice President of student affairs and Chief Diversity Officer at the highly respected Elms College in Massachusetts. Their deaths, and those of many other Black women, compel us to think critically about the state of mental health among Black women, and just as importantly, the progress that has been made in the provision of mental health resources for them. Seven years since the devastating loss of Khensani, South Africa is still grappling with the growing rates of mental illness and suicide among young women. Research indicates that a substantial percentage of young women in South Africa experience mental health issues. A 2021 study by Mthiyane and various other scholars found a 22.2% point prevalence of probable common mental disorders among rural adolescent girls and young women. This aligns with studies, including a 2024 report by the National Planning Commission, which indicates that in South Africa, mental health challenges are a significant concern among young women in particular. The studies indicate high prevalence rates of common mental disorders like depression and anxiety, and an increased risk for those experiencing trauma, HIV, or facing socio-economic hardship. South African women experience mental health problems more acutely than men due to a complex interplay of factors, including high rates of violence and abuse, socio-economic challenges, and the disproportionate burden of caregiving responsibilities. These factors create what researchers refer to as 'a perfect storm of stressors' that can negatively impact mental well-being. What has also emerged from mental health literature in South Africa is that common mental illnesses such as anxiety and depression are seen beyond the racial and class divide, even as Black women are most affected. Professor Simone Honikman from the University of Cape Town and the founder of the Perinatal Mental Health Project (PMHP) explaining it in the context of perinatal women, contends that the core social determinants of mental unwellness in our country include poverty, food insecurity, intimate partner violence, domestic violence, discrimination, social isolation and marginalisation, experiences of adverse childhood events and trauma, and a lack of safety and security. These social determinants extend beyond perinatal women, and more significantly, are both gendered and racialised. Their impact on women in the domestic and workspaces is significant. Black women, confronted with experiences of trauma, discrimination, economic violence and social isolation, are especially affected by mental health challenges. The data is unambiguous on this. The implication is that women in South Africa, particularly Black women, are in need of not just mental health support but also safe spaces in which they can exist as fully human. The creation of such spaces is critical if we are to arrest the growing crisis of Black women's mental health challenges in both the productive and the reproductive space. It is especially important that Black women are provided the necessary support to facilitate their empowerment because it is only when Black women are supported and empowered that we can begin to forge communities that thrive. Such communities must be built on material and non-material support, anchored on psychological safety. In the second part of this conversation, we will explore the meaning of psychological safety and locate it within the context of the support required to achieve women's empowerment. We will answer the question: 'What are safe spaces for Black women and how can these be created in South Africa?' Defining safe spaces and engaging in a process of co-creation of these spaces is a necessary step towards protecting and supporting young Black women. The death of Khensani and so many others like her, who felt unsupported, in Africa and beyond, should be a reminder of the kind of society we do not want. Westville hospital rejects racism claims

THE Life Healthcare Westville Hospital has rejected claims of racial discrimination raised by protesters who picketed outside the facility's premises on Monday, demanding that Dr Ntando Peaceman Duze be immediately reinstated. Duze is being investigated by the Health Professionals Council of SA (HPCSA) and the hospital for alleged malpractice. Allegations include claims that the cardiologist performed unnecessary surgical procedures, like inserting stents on patients who claim they did not require it. The doctor's protesting supporters were of the view that Duze is the subject of unfair treatment, racism, prejudice and jealousy from some professional peers. The regional manager – East Coast of Life Healthcare, Bhaviksha Maharaj, confirmed that the hospital is aware of these allegations. 'In line with standard procedure, his admitting privileges were temporarily suspended pending a confidential internal review, conducted alongside an independent HPCSA investigation. This precautionary measure did not prevent him from practising at another facility or seeing patients in his rooms; it applied solely to hospital admissions, which is standard protocol. We are aware of the recent gathering that took place outside the hospital and wish to be clear that we do not take the concerns raised lightly. We reject any claims of racial discrimination and remain committed to equality, fairness, and respect for all practitioners, staff, and patients. 'While we strive to be transparent, due to the ongoing HPCSA investigation we are unable to comment on specific information to protect the integrity of the process, and all parties involved. 'The safety and well-being of our patients, employees and healthcare practitioners remain our highest priorities,' said Maharaj. Maharaj referred the media to Duze for any enquiries regarding 'clinical matters related to patient care' and added that 'all doctors at Life Westville Hospital operate as independent practitioners'. One of the protesters, Duze's practice manager, Zandi Madikizela, had alleged that Duze had not been given enough time to relocate his patients as he had only three days notice before having to vacate his practice. Mokopane girl born without arms defies the odds

Four years ago, Martha Marema returned home from the doctor filled with excitement – she was expecting her first daughter after having two sons. 'I was so happy to hear I was having a princess,' Martha recalls. But she had no idea of the journey that lay ahead. Polokwane Review reports that on the day baby Lesego was born at Voortrekker Hospital, Martha sensed that something was different. Despite hearing her baby cry, the midwives didn't bring her daughter to her immediately. 'They tried to prepare me, but at that moment, I didn't understand,' she says. Lesego had been born without arms. 'When they finally gave her to me, I didn't know whether to scream or cry. I was broken inside,' says an emotional Martha. 'I spent days in tears, thinking someone was going to wake me up from a bad dream.' It was difficult at first, not knowing where to begin or how to help her child. But Martha was determined that her daughter would live a full life. 'Even though she was born without arms, I was going to do everything I could to give her a normal childhood.' She turned to online research, learning how people without limbs adapt to daily life. Teaching Lesego to use her feet was a challenge, as Martha herself couldn't fully relate, but Lesego took it all in stride. At nine months, she started crawling. A few months later, she was walking, though her balance needed work. And at just two years old, Lesego amazed her mother by picking up a spoon with her toes and feeding herself. Today, Lesego colours in with her feet, plays games on a phone and eats independently. 'The community has been wonderful,' says Martha. 'Everyone looks out for her, and she has a special bond with her brothers. She radiates love and brings light wherever she goes.' Lesego even caught national attention when President Cyril Ramaphosa wished her a happy birthday on April 13 via TikTok, where Martha shares her daughter's inspiring journey. 'She is my miracle,' says Martha. 'Without even realising it, she shows me every day that anything is possible if you believe.'
