Romeo wins Dauphine third stage to take yellow
Romeo surprised his breakaway companions, including Dutch world champion Mathieu van der Poel, to drop them in the final kilometres and lead the dash into the town of Charantonnay.
'I've been thinking about this stage for a month now. I can hardly believe it. It was one of the hardest days of my life, I wasn't feeling well,' said time-trial specialist Romeo.
'But I followed my instincts in the final. It's the best day of the year for me. Hard work pays off.'
It was the second win of the 21-year-old Movistar rider's career, and earned him the yellow leader's jersey on the eve of the first time-trial in this edition of the Dauphine.
Romeo completed the hilly run across the southeast of France in 4hr 34min 10sec.
Colombian Astana rider Harold Tejada came in second at 14sec, with Frenchman Louis Barre of Intermarche complet-ing the podium.
The peloton, containing many of the race favourites, rolled in just over a minute later at the end of a day without any major incidents.
One of those contenders for the general classification is Red Bull leader Florian Lipowitz -- in the absence of last year's winner Primoz Roglic -- who did well to slip into the breakaway and come in just outside the podium.
The German sits fourth overall, with a 42sec advantage over ninth-placed Slovenian Tadej Pogacar.
The breakaway formed quickly after the start, and was composed of 13 riders.

Marchand shatters record as US, Australia win more world gold
Leon Marchand smashed the 200m individual medley world record in Singapore yesterday with another breathtaking swim while Australia and the United States celebrated more gold. Racing in the semi-finals at the world championships, the 23-year-old Frenchman wiped more than a second off the previous record of 1:54.00 set by Ryan Lochte in 2011. Marchand beat Michael Phelps's long-standing 400m medley record at the world championships in Japan two years ago. 'Actually I can't believe it right now,' said Marchand, who won four individual golds in front of his home fans at the Paris Olympics a year ago and was the face of the Games. 'I knew I was going to be close to my PB (personal best) because I felt really good today and preparation has been pretty good. 'But 1:52 is unbelievable for me.' Marchand took an extended break from swimming after Paris and only returned to competition in May. He is focusing on the individual medley events in Singapore and had said he was gunning for Lochte's record. Osaka to work with Wiktorowski on trial after Mouratoglou split
AFP | Montreal Japan's Naomi Osaka, a fourtime Grand Slam singles champion, will work with Polish coach Tomasz Wiktorowski on a trial basis after splitting with Patrick Mouratoglou after less than a year together. Osaka announced the parting with Frenchman Mouratoglou, the former coach of superstar Serena Williams, on social media on Monday before defeating Canadian qualifier Ariana Arseneault 6-4, 6-2 in 76 minutes in a first round match at the WTA Canadian Open in Montreal. Osak a, ranked 49th, began working in Canada with Wiktorowski, who coached Poland's Agnieszka Radwanska from 2011- 2018, helping her reach the Wimbledon final and world number two ranking in July 2012. Wiktorowski also coached Poland's Iga Swiatek from late 2021 until last October, a run where she won four of her six career Grand Slam singles titles, before adding the most recent at Wimbledon earlier this month. Osaka, who improved to 11-1 in matches against players ranked outside the top 100, will next face 13th seed Liudmila Samsonova in the second round. They have split four prior meetings but Osaka won the two they played on hardcourts. Former world number one Osaka, 27, began working with Mouratoglou last September.
