SVI unveils B4+ armoured Jeep Grand Cherokee with AK-47 protection

TimesLIVE24-04-2025
SVI Engineering has partnered with Stellantis South Africa to create a special, discreetly armoured version of the Jeep Grand Cherokee five-seater SUV.
The package boasts AK-47 protection and does not affect the vehicle's five-year/100,000km manufacturer warranty and five-year/100,000km maintenance plan.
The B4+ armouring components are separately covered by SVI's one-year/50,000km warranty.
SVI's bespoke armouring package for the five-seater version of the Grand Cherokee offers B4+ protection, meaning it is rated to withstand attacks not only from handguns but also from the ubiquitous AK-47 assault rifle.
The ballistic package is concealed and virtually imperceptible to the untrained eye.
Comprising custom-fabricated armoured steel plates, lightweight composite materials and special 32mm ballistic glass curved to OEM specification, the Jeep-supported B4+ solution for the Grand Cherokee was developed in-house by SVI.
In addition to the concealed body armour (including inside the pillars) and imported ballistic glass, the Grand Cherokee conversion incorporates partial firewall protection and an armoured rear bulkhead — the latter complete with a neatly integrated escape hatch — behind the second row of seats. In total, the armouring materials add about 400kg to the SUV's total mass.
The Grand Cherokee's driver assistance safety systems — including those that rely on sensors mounted behind the windscreen — remain fully operational.
The driver's window can be lowered about one-third of the way, allowing access to parking ticket machines and biometric readers.
SVI's Jeep-supported B4+ armouring solution for the Grand Cherokee five-seater is priced from R1,236,814 (excluding VAT). The Bashewa-based armouring specialist also offers a standard B4 discreet package for the Grand Cherokee — including the 7-seater 'L' model — providing protection against handguns (up to .44 Magnum), with pricing starting at R833,684 (excluding VAT).

Jeep Gladiator 392 Hemi V8 in the works

The Jeep Gladiator will now reportedly join its Wrangler sibling in offering the 6.4-litre Hemi V8 engine as an option. According to The Citizen, its largest engine to date has been the venerable 3.6-litre Pentastar V6. Big block V8 Known by its cubic inch moniker 392, the V8 has been exclusive to the three-door Rubicon-spec Wrangler since its debut five years ago, producing 350kW/637Nm. The first-ever bent-eight Wrangler's largest engine was a 4.2-litre straight-six used in the original YJ, made between 1986 and 1995. The resumption of Hemi production earlier this year, largely for Jeep's sister brand, Ram, will now include the Gladiator as only the fourth Stellantis North America product to have an eight-cylinder engine, the others being the Wrangler, Ram 1500 and Dodge Durango. Supposedly discontinued two years ago at the behest of former Stellantis boss Carlos Tavares, but brought back this year by the conglomerate's North American operations head, Tim Kuniskis, the internally named Apache unit has also been mentioned as possibly being expanded to other Jeep derivatives. This is according to the company's CEO, Bob Broderdorf, who confirmed the V8 not only for the Gladiator but also for more versions of the Wrangler, as reported by Australia's CarExpert. 'We will extend the availability of the 392 Wrangler and, in fact, we will tap the power and performance of the Hemi across Jeep products as new projects are already underway,' Broderdorf was quoted as saying. 'Wrangler and Gladiator fans, and Hemi fans in general, don't worry – we got you.' 392 for South Africa? Meanwhile, Stellantis South Africa has indicated that the Wrangler 392 is being investigated for the local market as an alternative to the current 2.0-litre turbocharged Hurricane petrol model. At its annual media connect event last month, the firm announced it is also looking into bringing back the Pentastar V6, which was dropped in favour of the forced-assisted four-cylinder as part of the facelift Wrangler's arrival last year. For now, an official reveal of the Gladiator 392 remains unknown, but more information is expected soon. With South Africa mentioned as a possible market for the Wrangler 392, and the facelift Gladiator already approved for introduction next year, the V8-engined Gladiator could well be considered for local sale once it becomes a reality.

Gauteng man in a legal battle with BMW Financial Services as he's forced to pay over R1. 6 million for uncollected car

Farhaad Mahomed was concerned that the new car he purchased might have been test-driven by potential buyers after seeing it displayed in the dealership's showroom. A Gauteng business man is in a financial nightmare as BMW Financial Services have taken him to court to demand R1.6 million over a luxury vehicle he never collected. The turmoil began in late 2019 when Farhaad Mahomed, riding high on the success of his business, made a significant investment into a brand-new BMW X3M Competition destined to enhance his fleet. The 50-year-old from Lenasia in Johannesburg, bought the brand new car in November 2019 from SMG BMW Century City in Cape Town. To secure the car, he stated that the dealership required him to sign an undated finance contract even though the vehicle was still at the port of Durban. Before the deal was completed, Mahomed said he paid a hefty R200,000 deposit and BMW Financial Services financed the balance of over R1 million. Mahomed arranged for the vehicle to be delivered to his local BMW dealership, planning to pick it up in January 2020 so that it could be registered as a 2020 model. Little did he know, this decision would plunge him into a legal nightmare. "If I had fetched it immediately in December, it would have been registered as a 2019 model and I would have driven it for just 30 days, for me it didn't make sense. So we agreed that I'll be fetching the car on January 2, 2020," he said. As he was still waiting to collect the car, he noticed the car was advertised on various social media platforms after it was displayed in the dealership's showroom. He grew concerned that prospective clients might be test-driving it and asked for the advertisement to be taken down, but his request was not fulfilled. "I was not happy because this means anyone who came to the dealership had access to the car and would have potentially test driven it if they were interested in it. This means the car was no longer new but a demo car and I was not going to accept it." He provided IOL with an email sent to BMW, detailing his concern about the car being displayed in the showroom. In response, the sales manager explained that the car was in the showroom due to the basement parking being full. The manager also stated that it was improbable for Mahomed to be the vehicle's first driver, as new vehicles are typically driven multiple times before reaching their owners. "When the car is loaded onto a carrier at the plant, it is physically driven by a person. The same happens when the car is loaded onto a cargo vessel for the shipping of the car to South Africa. Once the vessel arrives in our harbor, another person physically drives the car off the vessel to be loaded onto a carrier that will transport the car to Midrand," read the reply. Still not satisfied with the response, Mahomed said he requested the footage to prove the car had not been driven while at the dealership, but he was informed that there were no cameras in the showroom and others were not working. "That's when I knew they were playing me, they couldn't even provide me with proof that the car remained stationery from the day they got delivery," he said.

Jeep Gladiator set to get Wrangler 392's Hemi V8

Resumption of Hemi production will, for the first time, expand to Jeep's double cab bakkie.
