Philadelphia police, firefighters join anti-violence activists for "Peace Not Guns" basketball game
The competition was high for the Peace Not Guns Memorial Basketball game featuring the Philly Ballers — a team comprised of members of the police and fire departments, the sheriff's office and SEPTA police — vs. the Real Brothers Basketball League, a community anti-violence group.
The event featured a three-point contest along with five-on-five hoops.
City Council President Kenyatta Johnson started anti-violence initiative Peace Not Guns in 1998 following the murder of his cousin.
"If they are not involved in things that are positive during the summer, during the time when school is out, they get involved in things that are negative," Johnson said.
Albert Custis is the coach for the Real Brothers Basketball League, which hosts games for kids and adults throughout the week at 20th and Tasker streets.
"The basketball league (has been) going on for 10 years — no shootings, no fights, no nothing," Curtis said.
This event at Vare Rec Center is just feet from the site of a mass shooting that killed three people and left nine injured on July 7 along South Etting Street.
For Commissioner Kevin Bethel, events like this were an integral part of his childhood and now a way to help break the cycle of violence in his city.
"I'm a byproduct of the neighborhood, I'm a byproduct of Sherwood Rec Center and a PAL kid," Bethel said, "and I tell people all the time this is what got me out of the neighborhood."
And no matter the score, everyone's goal was the same: Pick up basketballs, not guns, making everyone on this court a winner.

Brad Pitt Home Burglary Suspects in Custody for Different Southern California Burglary

Jaquory Arman Watson and Damari Zair Charles, both 18, were arrested on Monday, Aug. 11, on first-degree burglary charges and a sentencing enhancement for allegedly committing the act in concert with another person. They allegedly targeted another residence in Orange County, Calif., on Thursday, Aug. 7. They are being held without bail, according to Orange County court records obtained by PEOPLE. If found guilty, Watson and Charles could face up to six years in prison. The pair was allegedly part of a group of people who had been breaking into several homes across Southern California. The arrest comes just over a month after Pitt's home in the Los Angeles neighborhood, Los Feliz, was broken into on Wednesday, June 25. The alleged burglary occurred at approximately 10:30 p.m. local time, after the suspects "broke into the residence via the front window,' the Los Angeles Police Department previously told PEOPLE. They allegedly 'ransacked the location, then fled the location with miscellaneous property," police said. Pitt, 61, was not in the home at the time of the alleged burglary. While Watson and Charles have been identified, the third suspect has yet to be publicly identified. The pair can face charges related to the Pitt burglary in the coming days, per NBC 4. Thad Jean targets Cedric Doumbe following 2025 PFL championship win
Thad Jean has set his sights on one of the most dangerous strikers in MMA after capturing the 2025 PFL welterweight title. Jean (11-0) is looking to throw down with former two-time Glory Kickboxing champion Cedric Doumbe. The interest comes on the heels of Jean's big win over Logan Storley to win the 2025 PFL welterweight tournament earlier this month in Atlantic City. Jean knows there are many top names wanting to take his unbeaten record, but out of all the contenders, Doumbe excites Jean the most. "I would love that Cedric Doumbe fight," Jean told MMA Junkie. "Personally, if it was up to me, I would definitely go that Cedric Doumbe route first. I've been looking at him for a while now actually." Doumbe has also shown interest in the fight with some recent comments on social media. Jean wouldn't mind visiting France to fight in enemy territory. His only request is the timeline. "If they're talking about December, then yeah, I'll do it," Jean explained. "If they're talking about anything closer, I'm not going to do it. I'm just going to take a little break.
