Kansas City Chiefs WR Tyquan Thornton embraces possible special teams role

USA Today4 days ago
During Saturday's training camp press conference, Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Tyquan Thornton shared his thoughts on possibly making the final roster as a key special teams player.
'I do them (return punts) every day out here now, so we get better at it. I did it back at New England a little bit, mainly at practice, but not in the game situation.' said Thornton who also commented on possibly being a gunner on special teams, 'I mean, at New England, playing behind a guy like Matthew Slater, I learned a lot, I took a lot from him. So just apply that, come down here and do what I do.'
Thornton never found a consistent role with the New England Patriots, collecting 13 starts in 28 games and 39 receptions for 385 yards and two touchdowns. Last season, he finished with four catches for 47 yards in six games for New England before being traded to Kansas City.
His former teammate in New England, Slater, is considered one of the most outstanding gunners in league history. He made Pro Bowls in 16 seasons for his work on special teams.

Kansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce honors the franchise's winning culture as motivation

During Wednesday's training camp press conference, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce shared his motivation for another season, mainly due to the franchise's winning culture and talented staff. "I've been lucky to be here, what is it, my 13th year now? I absolutely love this organization," said Kelce, "I love the team. I love all the coaches I know, just about every defensive coach as well as all the offensive coaches, and vice versa, with the players and the staff in the equipment room, I have fun coming into work every single day. What better way to get better than to make sure that we lean on each other? And if I can give somebody a word that makes them better on that specific router, doing that specific drill, man, I'm here for it." Kelce enters the 2025 season behind Tony Gonzalez and Jason Witten for third all-time in tight end yards. He is only 896 yards behind Witten for second place. "I think that gives me more juice than, you know, than anything else. It is the fact that, you know, we have created this culture," said Kelce, "We have created this machine that you know, when you do it the right way, it works, and you get to win football games because of it. And I think that alone kind of gives you the excitement that what we're doing here is special." The 35-year-old ten-time Pro Bowler posted 823 yards with three touchdowns on 97 receptions in 2024.

Steelers countdown to kickoff — No. 31: a history of the number and who wore it best

The Steelers countdown to kickoff is here — and we're at 31 days until Pittsburgh faces off against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium. In the spirit of the countdown, we're taking a look at the history of No. 31 and the players who wore it best. Current Steelers No. 31 wearer: CB Beanie Bishop One of the most surprising rookie breakouts last season — CB Beanie Bishop is the current No. 31 wearer on the Steelers roster. After signing with Pittsburgh as an undrafted free agent following the 2024 NFL Draft, Bishop clearly had a chip on his shoulder — snagging four interceptions in just six starts as a rookie. His role in 2025 is expected to be far less impactful after two huge cornerback additions this offseason in Darius Slay and Jalen Ramsey, but his development should skyrocket with two veteran presences in the secondary. Last five Steelers to wear No. 31: Best No. 31 in Steelers history: S Donnie Shell The greatest Steeler to wear No. 31 is without a doubt S Donnie Shell — who signed with Pittsburgh after going undrafted in the 1974 NFL Draft. Over the course of 14 seasons from 1974 to 1987, Shell played in 201 games for the Pittsburgh Steelers — responsible for 51 interceptions, the third-most by a Steeler all time. During his Pittsburgh tenure, Shell won four Super Bowls alongside the legendary Steel Curtain defense — as well as being named to five Pro Bowls, earning three First-Team All-Pro selections, and one Second-Team All-Pro selection. He was also recognized and celebrated on the Pittsburgh Steelers All-Time Team, the Pittsburgh Steelers Hall of Honor, and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2020. Shell's impact on the game and his part in creating the Steel City dynasty is why he's the best Steeler to ever wear No. 31. Kansas City Chiefs DC Steve Spagnuolo welcomes former Las Vegas Raiders HC to camp

During Wednesday's training camp press conference, Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo shared his reasons for inviting former Las Vegas Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce to Missouri Western State University for practice. "Well, I think you guys probably know this. Antonio (Pierce) and I have been close for a long time. I went in '07 when I went to New York with the Giants. He was the Mike linebacker. The present-day version of Antonio Pierce is Nick Bolton now," said Spagnuolo, "It's guys like that. And obviously, looking at Antonio and what he's like now, he became a coach. He went all the way to being a head coach. He obviously had that when he was a player. That's a nice thing to have when you're a defensive coordinator. Guy, that's cerebral. And I got a lot of respect for Antonio." Pierce memorably coached the Raiders to a shocking Christmas Day victory over the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium in 2023, earning him the head coach role permanently through the 2024 season. "I'm glad he came through. The guys are loving having them," said Spagnuolo, "He's given him feedback from a player's standpoint, coaches' standpoint, head coaches' standpoint, and maybe we'll ask him about some Las Vegas Raiders stuff." The Raiders fired Pierce after a 4-13 season in 2024.
