VW's Most Unusual Beetle Hits the Block

VW's Most Unusual Beetle Hits the Block

Miami Herald4 days ago
Few cars match the original Volkswagen Beetle's cultural reach. It started as an affordable transportation, but fate dictated its evolution into a global icon. Its distinctive shape, simple mechanics, and underdog character are embraced by fans. The Beetle raced off-road, starred in films, and inspired a worldwide cult following.
We've seen several custom-built Beetles in the past – including a pickup truck conversion – but one version stands out: the limousine Beetle that Porsche and Volkswagen distributor John von Neumann commissioned in 1969. It wasn't just a stretched version of the People's Car – it was a purpose-built luxury car that Volkswagen of America used as a promotional centerpiece.
Von Neumann sourced the build from Culver City's Troutman-Barnes, the same outfit that crafted Chaparral and Scarab race cars. They extended a stock Type 1 Beetle by 40 inches, resulting in a car that stretched 16 feet, 6 inches. They used original VW parts wherever possible, including the custom rear doors and running boards, to preserve a factory-like finish.
Junior Conway of Junior's House of Color painted it in black baked enamel. Hot rod upholsterer Tony Nancy trimmed the cabin in gray English broadcloth at the rear and black vinyl up front, divided by a power-operated partition. The build also included power windows, soundproofing, a mahogany-trimmed minibar with foldout jump seats, an intercom, a Philips five-speaker cassette system, and a roof-mounted carriage lamp.
To handle the 400-pound weight gain, builders installed a 1.6-liter flat-four engine with dual Weber downdraft carburetors. The project cost $34,499.95 – far more than a new Lamborghini Miura at the time – and Volkswagen of America ran a national ad calling it "The $35,000 Beetle."
The limo made magazine covers, including Dune Buggies and Hot VWs, in September 1971. Historical notes suggest it chauffeured John Wayne to the 1970 Academy Awards, where he won Best Actor for True Grit, although that detail remains unconfirmed.
After Volkswagen of America took ownership of the Beetle limo, Orange County VW dealer Chick Iverson acquired the car through a sealed bid in 1979. In 1996, he sold it to Lorenzo Pearson, founder of West Coast Metric. Pearson preserved the car in his collection for nearly three decades, maintaining it meticulously with documented service records and a handwritten logbook.
Now, RM Sotheby's will offer the "Rollswagen" at its Monterey auction on August 15, 2025. It's estimated to fetch around $150,000 to $200,000. For collectors who appreciate one-off craftsmanship and period marketing oddities, this Beetle is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

You're About to Start Hearing a Lot More About Porsche Design Watches

Everyone, maybe even someone living under a rock, has heard the name Porsche. For most, it will conjure images of the famed 911 sports car. Fewer will think of Porsche Design watches, even though they've been produced for more than 40 years. Now the Porsche family is planning to change that. After many years as a separate company, the maker of watches, sunglasses, apparel and other sports gear was brought fully into the fold with the automaker in 2017, when Porsche obtained the final 35% of shares it hadn't previously controlled. Now, Porsche Design is a part of the broader Porsche Lifestyle Group, which includes departments that make apparel, car accessories, and collaborations on products like eBikes, surfboards, and skis. And all of these categories will be given higher priority by the automaker as it evolves into the future. Watches, in particular, will be boosted in production numbers and in store presence.

2026 Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet Spied: Is this an Improvement?

Stefan Baldauf / SB-Medien The latest car news, reviews, and features. Porsche's overhaul of its 911 lineup marches on. Just a few days ago, we got our first glance at what will become the new 911 Speedster, and today we're seeing our first pictures of the updated 911 Turbo Cabriolet, which we also expect to debut some time later this year or early next. According to our spy photographer, Porsche has been testing the 911 Turbo coupe for some time, but this is the first known appearance of the updated ragtop. Porsche didn't go to great lengths to disguise the updates here, but that makes sense given that we've seen most of the new styling elements in some form or another elsewhere in the 2025 lineup, where the update cycle began. The revised grille is on full display, as is a new set of wheels. The lower rear bumper is also significantly more sculpted than the outgoing Turbo's. We expect that the already blisteringly quick 911 Turbo will get a slight power bump to go with its various stylistic nips and tucks, and while it's not quite as highfalutin' as the limited-edition Speedster, the Turbo Cabriolet has a reputation to protect as the box-checker's 911, meaning it'll be stuffed with virtually every gizmo Porsche offers. Porsche H1 profits plunge 67%

In the first half (H1) of 2025, Porsche's operating profit plummeted by 67% to €1.01bn ($1.16bn), compared to €3.06bn in the same period last year. Sales revenue also saw a decline of 6.7% to €18.16bn, with the operating return on sales dropping to 5.5%. The company's performance was affected by macroeconomic and geopolitical challenges. During H1 2025, Porsche incurred special expenses of around €200m for its realignment and approximately €500m for battery activities. The US tariffs added an extra €400m load, as Porsche offered price protection to its customers and absorbed extra import tax costs rather than passing them on. The automotive net cashflow stood at €394m, a significant decrease from the previous year's €1.12bn. The margin also fell to 2.4%. However, vehicle deliveries remained robust, with 146,391 units worldwide, 36.1% of which were electrified. Porsche has revised its financial forecast for 2025, taking into account the recent EU Commission's agreement with the US on import tariffs. The updated forecast includes an anticipated 15% US import tariff from 1 August and potential price adjustments to offset the financial impact. Porsche maintains its expected group sales revenue of €37 to €38bn, consistent with its previous projections. The carmaker is navigating a challenging period marked by a significant restructuring process, a slow transition to electric vehicles, and market difficulties in China. Also, it is reportedly set to intensify its cost-cutting efforts as it faces headwinds from declining sales in China and the impact of US import tariffs. Porsche said that its management is 'resolutely pushing ahead with extensive measures to rescale and recalibrate the company'. Despite these challenges, Porsche's revised outlook remains optimistic, with a group return on sales of 5% to 7% and an automotive net cashflow margin of 3% to 5%. Special effects associated with strategic realignment are expected to incur costs of approximately €1.3bn. Porsche executive board chairman Oliver Blume said: 'We continue to face significant challenges around the world. And this is not a storm that will pass. The world is changing dramatically – and, above all, differently to what was expected just a few years ago. Some of the strategic decisions made back then appear in a different light today. That is why we are fundamentally developing Porsche further. 'Our completely revamped product range is very well received by our customers. We expect that we will begin to see positive economic momentum again from 2026 onwards.' The Macan was the 'best-selling model', and Porsche achieved new delivery records in North America and other markets. Porsche subsidiary V4Smart has also celebrated a milestone, with its second production line in Nördlingen, Bavaria, ramping up as planned. This line, along with the one in Ellwangen, represents Europe's only production facilities for high-performance lithium-ion round cells.
