Special meeting on proposed development inside Cenderawasih Cave to be held soon
KANGAR: A special meeting involving several key agencies will be convened soon to deliberate on the proposed development inside the Cenderawasih Cave in Bukit Lagi, a protected geosite within the Perlis Geopark, following public concern over environmental sustainability.
Perlis Menteri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli said the meeting will involve the Department of Minerals and Geoscience (JMG), the State Economic Planning Unit (BPEN), and the Kangar Municipal Council (MPK) and the discussion will focus on the potential impact of development, including a proposed cafe, within the geologically sensitive cave area.
'BPEN will coordinate with JMG... this meeting will be final. We'll consider every angle, what's permissible and what's not. If it risks compromising our geopark, we'll withdraw. No problem,' he told reporters after attending the state Cabinet's monthly assembly at the State Government Complex today.
On May 18, the media reported that JMG had yet to receive any formal application from operators or local authorities requesting technical evaluation for development, including a cafe project, inside the cave.
The agency emphasised that the Cenderawasih Cave lies within the Bukit Lagi geosite, part of the broader Perlis Geopark, and that its preservation aligns with the Malaysia MADANI vision, which promotes balance between development and natural conservation for future generations' well-being.
JMG further noted that the Bukit Lagi geosite is composed of Setul Formation limestone dating back over 480 million years and is rich in fossils such as nautiloids, gastropods, and brachiopods.
The site also features unique geological elements, including ancient sea notches, small caves, and mushroom-shaped rock formations.
In light of the sensitivities, Mohd Shukri confirmed that work related to the cafe operations has been ordered to halt immediately, pending the outcome of the forthcoming meeting.
Earlier during the assembly, the Menteri Besar also launched the Electronic Complaint Perlis System (ECOMPS), a digital public complaints platform developed by the state's Public Works Department (JKR) as part of the state's broader Perlis Digital Agenda aimed at enhancing public service delivery through technology.

KUALA LUMPUR: Selangor Pakatan Harapan wants Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari to remain menteri besar until the end of the current term. This comes amidst speculation that Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz might join PKR and replace Amirudin. In a joint statement, leaders from the coalition's component parties said they fully support Amirudin to stay on in the position. They said the support was in line with the need to ensure a stable and strong administration of the Selangor government in order to implement various planned policies and initiatives. These, they said, included the Second Selangor Plan, the development of a third port in Pulau Carey, the Iltizam Selangor Penyayang agenda and Kompleks Sukan Shah Alam (KSSA). "The continuity of the state's top leadership will send a positive message to investors and the business community in Selangor." Describing Amirudin as an experienced administrator, the leaders expressed their belief that Amirudin's services were needed in Selangor. This, they said, was to ensure the state continues to be the nation's economic powerhouse, while advancing the Malaysia Madani agenda championed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. They added that Amirudin's leadership as the Selangor PH chairman was essential to strengthen collaboration with Barisan Nasional ahead of the upcoming general election. "His experience and leadership have been key to the unity that led to victory and the formation of the unity government in Selangor during the last state election," they said. The statement was jointly issued by Ng Sze Han, who is Selangor DAP chairman; Datuk Izham Hashim, who is Selangor Amanah chairman, and Datuk Borhan Aman Shah, who is Selangor PKR deputy chairman. All three are members of the Selangor executive council. Earlier today, Amirudin once again dismissed speculation that he and Tengku Zafrul will switch roles following the latter's decision to leave Umno and join PKR. The PKR vice-president also said he did not foresee a by-election being called to make way for Tengku Zafrul in the Selangor assembly, nor does he expect to vacate his seat to move to the federal level. Yesterday, Tengku Zafrul had announced his resignation from all posts in Umno, along with his membership in the party. In a posting on his Facebook account, Tengku Zafrul also announced his intention to join PKR .

Selangor Pakatan leaders want Amirudin to stay as MB to allow 'continuity'
KLANG: Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz quitting Umno for PKR has got Selangor Pakatan Harapan parties urging Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari to complete his full term as Mentri Besar. Amirudin has emerged as a favourite to take up a Cabinet position in the Federal Government following the resignation of Economy Minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli and Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad. Selangor DAP chairman Ng Sze Han, his Amanah counterpart Datuk Izham Hashim and state PKR deputy chief Datuk Borhan Aman Shah issued a joint statement Saturday (May 31) saying Pakatan Harapan component parties wanted to maintain the status quo in the Selangor state administration. 'This support (for Amirudin) is in line with the need for the Selangor state administration to remain stable and strong to implement the various welfare programmes and policies that have been planned,'' said the trio. They named the Second Selangor Plan, the development of the third port in Carey Island, and the construction of the Shah Alam Stadium Complex among the plans undergoing completion under Amirudin's purview. 'The continuity of the main state leadership will deliver a positive message to investors and the business community in Selangor,'' said the statement. The leaders said they were also of the opinion that Amirudin's leadership as the Selangor Pakatan chief was much needed to strengthen the cooperation with Barisan Nasional for the upcoming general election. 'His experience and leadership are the key to the unity that has been shaped, which saw victory as well as the formation of the Unity Government in Selangor after the last general election," they added. Should Amirudin make the move to Putrajaya, Seri Setia assemblyman and chairman of the state Islamic and cultural innovation committee, Dr Fahmi Ngah, is one of the main potential candidates rumoured to replace him. Ng, Izham and Borhan went on to say they believed that, as an experienced administrator, Amirudin's service was also needed to help ensure Selangor continues being the nation's economic stronghold while at the same time ensuring Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's Malaysia Madani agenda is a success. Tengku Zafrul announced his decision to leave Umno to join PKR on Friday (May 30), and this started speculation that he may be brought into the state administration to helm Selangor. However, a PKR insider said that this was not possible, as to be a state mentri besar or even an executive councillor, one would have to be an assemblyman first.

Kota Kinabalu: Malaysia is actively implementing the National Geopark Development Plan 2021–2030 (PPGN) as a key strategy to develop sustainable and inclusive geoparks across the country, said Minerals and Geoscience Department Deputy Director Jenneth Liliana Cyril. She said the implementation of PPGN plays a crucial role in ensuring geoparks in Malaysia serve not only as protected geological areas but also as catalysts for economic development, environmental education and local community wellbeing. 'Malaysia has made notable progress in geopark development, beginning with Langkawi's recognition as a Unesco Global Geopark (UGGp) in 2007, followed by Kinabalu Geopark being recognised as the country's second UGGp in 2023,' she said at the Malaysian Geopark Network Conference here. She noted that several other areas, including Jerai, Lembah Kinta, Labuan, Lenggong, Sarawak Delta, Stong, Gombak-Hulu Langat, Kenyir, Perlis and Lipis have been designated as National Geoparks. Moving forward to 2030, key targets include elevating Lenggong, Sarawak Delta and Gombak-Hulu Langat to UGGp status and recognising Melaka and Jelebu as new National Geoparks. 'The implementation of the National Geopark Development Plan is supported by the State Geopark Local Plan (PLGN), which will be adopted by state and local authorities once an area has received national geopark recognition. 'Together, PPGN and PLGN outline comprehensive strategies for planning, conservation, management, education and community participation, which is aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),' Jenneth said. 'Through the implementation of the Plan, local communities are empowered to engage in eco-tourism, small-scale heritage-based enterprises, conservation work and educational activities,' she added. These efforts, she said, contribute significantly to rural development and the economic empowerment of local populations. Janet reaffirmed JMG's commitment to working closely with State Governments, local authorities and international partners to ensure the effective and sustainable implementation of the Plan.
