Selangor Pakatan leaders want Amirudin to stay as MB to allow 'continuity'

The Star31-05-2025
KLANG: Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz quitting Umno for PKR has got Selangor Pakatan Harapan parties urging Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari to complete his full term as Mentri Besar.
Amirudin has emerged as a favourite to take up a Cabinet position in the Federal Government following the resignation of Economy Minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli and Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.
Selangor DAP chairman Ng Sze Han, his Amanah counterpart Datuk Izham Hashim and state PKR deputy chief Datuk Borhan Aman Shah issued a joint statement Saturday (May 31) saying Pakatan Harapan component parties wanted to maintain the status quo in the Selangor state administration.
'This support (for Amirudin) is in line with the need for the Selangor state administration to remain stable and strong to implement the various welfare programmes and policies that have been planned,'' said the trio.
They named the Second Selangor Plan, the development of the third port in Carey Island, and the construction of the Shah Alam Stadium Complex among the plans undergoing completion under Amirudin's purview.
'The continuity of the main state leadership will deliver a positive message to investors and the business community in Selangor,'' said the statement.
The leaders said they were also of the opinion that Amirudin's leadership as the Selangor Pakatan chief was much needed to strengthen the cooperation with Barisan Nasional for the upcoming general election.
'His experience and leadership are the key to the unity that has been shaped, which saw victory as well as the formation of the Unity Government in Selangor after the last general election," they added.
Should Amirudin make the move to Putrajaya, Seri Setia assemblyman and chairman of the state Islamic and cultural innovation committee, Dr Fahmi Ngah, is one of the main potential candidates rumoured to replace him.
Ng, Izham and Borhan went on to say they believed that, as an experienced administrator, Amirudin's service was also needed to help ensure Selangor continues being the nation's economic stronghold while at the same time ensuring Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's Malaysia Madani agenda is a success.
Tengku Zafrul announced his decision to leave Umno to join PKR on Friday (May 30), and this started speculation that he may be brought into the state administration to helm Selangor.
However, a PKR insider said that this was not possible, as to be a state mentri besar or even an executive councillor, one would have to be an assemblyman first.

Ipoh Sentral recreational park prioritised before commercial projects

IPOH: The developer of Ipoh Sentral has been instructed to prioritise completing a recreational park before commencing commercial projects. Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook emphasised this as part of the project's first phase, expected within a year. He stated the condition aligns with Malaysia MADANI's goal of ensuring public benefits precede private profits. 'We want developers to prioritise the public first, which is our condition,' Loke said during the groundbreaking ceremony. He stressed the park must open within six to 12 months for locals to enjoy before profit-driven developments proceed. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim officiated the event alongside Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad. The project integrates rail, bus, and cycling lanes under the Transit Oriented Development (TOD) concept. Loke highlighted TOD's role in sustainable urban growth under the 13th Malaysia Plan. The government aims to launch 30 TODs in five years, with Ipoh Sentral being the first. Spanning 27 hectares, the RM6.2 billion project will feature a modern transport hub. Phase 1 includes a 6.31-acre green space, while Phase 2 involves mixed development over 20 years. Loke reiterated the importance of public-centric development for Perak's community. The event was attended by MRCB Land chairman Tan Sri Mohd Annuar Zaini. - Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 16 (Bernama) -- Yayasan Taqwa of the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP) has channelled RM50,000 to upgrade Surau At-Taqwa in Kampung Chemperoh, Janda Baik, Pahang. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar said the assistance would be used for repair works at the surau for the villagers' benefit. 'I personally inspected the surau and took note of the needs that will be addressed with this fund. 'Hopefully, the upgrades will make the surau more comfortable and conducive, while upholding the syiar of Islam in this village,' he said in a statement today. Earlier, he presented a mock cheque to the surau management. Mohd Naim also visited Ma'ahad An-Noer, a centre for higher Islamic and Al-Quran studies founded by Syeikh Muhammad Nuruddin Marbu Al-Banjari Al-Makki. He said the ma'ahad played a key role in producing Islamic scholars and huffaz (Quran memorisers), who are valuable assets to the ummah. In support of this noble effort, Mohd Naim also approved immediate assistance of RM20,000 to help implement the educational programmes and activities planned by the ma'ahad. 'It is hoped that this contribution will strengthen the role of Ma'ahad An-Noer in educating the younger generation in religious knowledge, fostering appreciation of the Quran, and developing leadership based on Islamic values.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Kembara Merdeka Jalur Gemilang (KMJG) 2025 convoy for Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya wrapped up its tour of three parliamentary constituencies today. Public enthusiasm was evident as crowds gathered to welcome the convoy and receive the Jalur Gemilang flags. He noted that around 3,000 flags were distributed to ignite national pride ahead of National Day and Malaysia Day. Public reactions were overwhelmingly positive, with cheerful faces and encouraging feedback observed throughout the route. Supporting agencies included MKN, JBPM, Bernama, FINAS, RTD, and PDRM. The KMJG 2025 flag was handed over to Sabarudin after the Pahang leg concluded on Aug 14. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim launched the nationwide campaign on July 27 in Muar, Johor.
