Indian Air Force
(IAF) is actively pushing for a
government-to-government agreement
with France to acquire additional
Rafale fighter jets
under the long-pending
Multi-Role Fighter Aircraft
(MRFA) programme, reported TOI on Monday.
The project envisions procuring 114 jets, most of which are intended to be manufactured domestically through foreign collaboration.

According to TOI defence sources, the IAF plans to submit the MRFA case for the initial Acceptance of Necessity (AoN)—the first crucial step in the procurement process—to the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) headed by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh within the next one to two months.

"Government will take the final decision when the MRFA case comes to DAC. But yes, IAF has projected an urgent need for additional Rafales to stem the depletion in the number of its fighter squadrons," a source told the news outlet.
While the final decision rests with the government once the case reaches the DAC, the reported noted that the IAF has stressed the urgent requirement for more Rafales to address the decline in its fighter squadron strength.

Strategic & logistical advantages
The IAF also projects a need for two to three squadrons of fifth-generation fighters—considering options like Russia's Sukhoi-57 and America's F-35—until the indigenous Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) becomes production-ready by 2035.
However, no formal discussions have yet begun with either Russia or the US, TOI further reported.
Officials argue that acquiring additional Rafales via a government-to-government route under the MRFA scheme would be economically and logistically more sensible and faster than launching a global tender.
The existing infrastructure at the Ambala and Hasimara air bases, which currently house 36 Rafales procured under a Rs 59,000 crore inter-governmental deal signed in September 2016, can accommodate at least one more squadron each.
"Both air bases already have the infrastructure and storage capacity to base at least one more Rafale squadron each," the source told TOI.
Additionally, the report states that the Indian Navy is slated to receive 26 Rafale-Marine jets for operations from the INS Vikrant between 2028 and 2030 under a separate Rs 63,887 crore contract with France signed in April.
Expanding the Rafale fleet would promote platform commonality and simplify logistics across the armed forces.
This push aligns with a recent high-level committee report led by Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, which outlined a comprehensive plan to accelerate the IAF's capability enhancement through increased private sector involvement alongside DRDO and defence public sector units.
Operational pressure
The IAF's renewed demand for Rafales follows the recent
Operation Sindoor
(May 7–10), during which Rafales played a key role in conducting long-range strikes across the Pakistan border.
Despite Pakistan's claims of shooting down six IAF jets, including three Rafales, India has denied such losses.
During the operation, Pakistan deployed Chinese-origin J-10 fighters equipped with PL-15 beyond-visual-range air-to-air missiles with ranges exceeding 200 km.
Currently, the IAF operates 31 fighter squadrons, each with 16-18 jets, a number expected to fall to a record low of 29 after the imminent retirement of MiG-21 aircraft next month.
According to TOI, this is significantly below the authorised strength of 42.5 squadrons required to counter threats from China and Pakistan—especially with China expected to supply Pakistan with approximately 40 J-35A fifth-generation stealth fighters in the near future.

Noida, Ghaziabad School Holiday: Four-Day Holiday Starts Today; Sparks Debate Over Learning Process

The Uttar Pradesh Basic Education Department has ordered the closure of government primary schools in Noida and Ghaziabad from August 14 to August 17, according to TOI reports. Private schools, however, remain unaffected and are expected to remain open on August 14. The announcement of the holiday has sparked concern among teachers regarding its impact on the learning process. A primary school teacher in Noida pointed out that this four-day break comes soon after schools were closed for a week due to the Kanwar Yatra. "Just a few days back, schools were closed for nearly a week due to the Kanwar Yatra. Now again there is a four-day holiday. This will hamper the teaching-learning process, especially for younger students," said a primary school teacher in Noida, TOI reported. The four-day break includes a restricted holiday for Chehlum on August 14, Independence Day celebrations on August 15, Janmashtami holiday on August 16, and Sunday on August 17. Basic Shiksha Adhikari (BSA) of Noida, Rahul Panwar, clarified that private schools can decide whether to remain open on August 14. 'Aug 14 is a restricted holiday. If any private school wants to remain open, they can,' he said. However, on Aug 15, all schools will reopen briefly for flag hoisting and Independence Day celebrations, said the official. Officials shared details of the Independence Day programme. "Majorly, Independence Day celebrations will take place in higher secondary schools on Thursday and Friday. Saturday is a holiday for Janmashtami," said Dharmendra Kumar, district inspector of schools (DIOS) of Ghaziabad, TOI reported. Kumar also mentioned the other necessary instructions to all schools regarding flag hoisting, cultural events, and safety protocols. On the other hand, another school teacher from Ghaziabad encouraged the announcement of a day break in school and said, "It's good that it's a long weekend. It gives everyone time to relax and recharge. Teachers, too, need some rest in the middle of a hectic term."

How many Pakistani jets India shot down in Op Sindoor? IAF confirmed 5, experts say 'evidence' of more

International military aviation analyst and historian Tom Cooper backed Indian Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh's recent assertion that India shot down five Pakistani air force jets during Operation Sindoor. While Pakistan continues to deny the claims, Tom Cooper, a renowned Austria-based aerial warfare expert, has said that what ACM Singh noted was just a 'confirmation of something that was more or less known since May'. Earlier this week, Singh maintained that India's S-400 systems struck at least five Pakistani jets and one big airborne early warning aircraft. Pakistan denied Singh's claim. However, during an interview with ANI, Cooper noted that Indian firepower remained dominated during the four-day military escalation between India and Pakistan. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'We have seen evidence of not only five but even more Pakistani aircraft being shot down. We have also seen evidence for even more Pakistani aircraft being destroyed on the ground. But there was no official confirmation from the IAF, not even from the government of India. Therefore, this is a nice confirmation for something that was assessed already back in May,' Cooper said in an interview with ANI. A world record was made Cooper identified the Pakistani early warning and control aircraft as a Saab 2000. The Austrian aviation expert went on to endorse Singh's claim that the successful strike from a range of 300 km was a world record. 'It is the longest range confirmed shoot-down by a surface-to-air missile. This is a historic achievement,' he said, lauding the extraordinary feat of the IAF, mentioning that the other instance of such an attack was recorded in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, where the weapon system was shot down at a distance of 200 km. 'This is a significant fact because we have seen IAF deploying its S-400 surface-to-air missile system very close to the border to Pakistan, so close that it was actually firing missiles from within the range of Pakistani army's artillery, which meant if it would stay, its presence of the firing unit in question would have been detected by Pakistanis too early, Pakistanis could have shelled the area in question, hit and destroyed this firing unit. So it was quite a risky operation, actually,' he told ANI. It is pertinent to note that Tom Cooper is not the only expert to endorse Singh's assessment. Earlier, well-known military strategist John Spencer maintained that Operation Sindoor marked India's decisive victory. With inputs from ANI.
