Bill Belichick highlights impact of transfer portal on UNC's 2025 football roster

USA Today3 days ago
Exactly how many transfers joined the UNC football program this offseason?
If you don't recognize many players on this year's UNC football roster, that's because of several 2024 departures and 2025 transfer portal additions.
North Carolina will enter its highly-anticipated season with new starters across the board. The Tar Heels will have a new starting quarterback for the third-consecutive fall, a young wide receiver room and entirely new defensive line, which replaces every 2024 starter.
On Saturday morning at UNC's first day of Training Camp, head coach Bill Belichick spoke extensively about his new team's roster overhaul, highlighting how he looked to fill positions through the spring portal.
"We have a lot of new players, a little over 40 from the spring and 70 guys that weren't on last year's team," Belichick said. "The first portal, we're just trying to find guys to fill the team. Second portal, we're looking for good football players. We felt like any position, if the player wanted to come in and compete – and we thought it was a good player – then this is the right spot for him. We'll give everybody an opportunity to compete. We're going to have to earn our spots on the field.'
One of North Carolina's latest portal additions is Boise State linebacker Andrew Simpson, who played a major role in helping the Broncos make their first-ever College Football Playoff appearance last season. Simpson started 11 games – and should slot in as a Day One starter for the Tar Heels.
North Carolina didn't know if Max Johnson, its 2024 initial starting quarterback, would be ready by the start of training camp. The Tar Heels nabbed South Alabama quarterback Gio Lopez, who thrived in 2024 as a first-time starting QB, in the transfer portal.

Dabo Swinney reveals Clemson running back Jarvis Green will miss most of the 2025 season

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney provided several health updates following Wednesday evening's practice at Jervey Meadows, including unfortunate news regarding redshirt sophomore running back Jarvis Green. Green is expected to miss most of the 2025 season after undergoing foot surgery. Swinney said it's the most serious injury the team has dealt with so far in fall camp. 'He's going to probably be out most of the year,' Swinney said. 'We had to do surgery on his foot, so he'll have a chance to come back at the end of the season. I hate that for him. I really do.' After redshirting in 2023, Green appeared in nine games last season, battling through multiple injuries. He finished the year with 53 rushing yards on nine carries and caught two passes out of the backfield. One of those receptions was a 25-yard touchdown in Clemson's College Football Playoff loss to Texas—a career first and a highlight moment on a big stage. Swinney said they may explore the possibility of a medical redshirt for Green, though nothing has been finalized. 'We'll just have to see how it all goes,' Swinney noted. In total, Green has played in 11 games over his Clemson career, logging 57 rushing yards and 35 receiving yards on 37 offensive snaps. Swinney also shared updates on several other Tigers. Defensive lineman Peter Woods missed Wednesday's practice due to illness, while safety Khalil Barnes is dealing with what Swinney called a 'short-term' injury and was spotted in a yellow jersey. Running back Jay Haynes continues progressing in his recovery from an ACL tear and is 'one step closer' to being cleared for practice. Meanwhile, cornerback Jeadyn Lukus is expected to return to practice sometime next week. North Carolina Courage terminates head coach Sean Nahas' contract ‘effective immediately'

The North Carolina Courage announced Wednesday evening that the club has terminated the contract of head coach Sean Nahas 'effective immediately,' according to the club's press release issued at 7:45 p.m. ET. 'The North Carolina Courage remain focused on the continued development of the team and maintaining a professional, competitive environment for players, staff, and supporters,' the statement concluded. Advertisement Nahas was hired as an assistant coach in 2017 and promoted to interim head coach in September 2021 following the firing of then-manager Paul Riley after several former players alleged Riley committed acts of sexual misconduct. On Dec. 1, 2022, the Courage announced that they had hired him as full-time head coach. A representative of the Courage, when reached by The Athletic, declined to comment further on the club's decision to terminate Nahas's contract. On June 8, the Courage posted in a statement on X that Nahas would not be with the team for their match that day against the Washington Spirit, citing 'unforeseen medical reasons.' Nahas was most recently seen with the Courage this past Saturday, Aug. 2 in the team's home match against the San Diego Wave, which ended in a scoreless draw. Nahas had also posted earlier on Wednesday evening on his personal Instagram account about the North Carolina technical staff and players training through poor weather on Wednesday. Nahas was instrumental in signing 20-year-old U.S. women's national team attacking midfielder Jaedyn Shaw, who joined the team on Jan. 14. The Courage currently sit just outside of NWSL playoff contention in ninth place. Through his tenure as interim and permanent head coach since October 2021, Nahas had a 15-9-12 record with the Courage. Spot the pattern. North Carolina could bring back iconic uniform for 2025 football season

Will the Tar Heels bring back an iconic uniform? The excitment around the North Carolina Tar Heels' football program is at an all-time high as they get ready to usher in a new era under Bill Belichick. As the legendary head coach begins his first season with the program, many are hoping he can turn things around. There will be a lot of attention on the program nationally as well. Belichick is obviously a big name in the business and landing a head coach like him was huge for the program. It also opened up the door for new opportunities in terms of revenue and fun ideas for the program. That includes the return of a classic uniform possibly this season. Per Taylor Vippolis of Inside Carolina, the Tar Heels have placed an order for the 1980's throwback uniform, hoping to wear them this year. The Tar Heels brought back the navy uniforms a few years back which ended up being a hit. This classic uniform is a fan favorite, donned by Lawrence Taylor among other Tar Heel legends. Bringing it back would be a HUGE hit with the fanbase and with Belichick's ties to Taylor, it makes a lot of sense. There's no word on if these were approved or what games they would wear them for but I can't see why they would say no. Let's hope we get to see these at some point this season.
