Milwaukee Bucks' Bobby Portis suspended 25 games after testing positive for banned painkiller

Chicago Tribune20-02-2025

The NBA suspended Milwaukee Bucks forward Bobby Portis Jr. for 25 games without pay because he tested positive for the painkiller Tramadol, a violation of the league's anti-drug program.
Portis cannot play again until April 8 — the 79th game of the Bucks' 82-game regular-season schedule — at the earliest. His suspension starts with Thursday's game against the Los Angeles Clippers.
'I was dealing with an elbow injury and using an NBA-approved medication for pain and inflammation,' Portis said in a statement the team released. 'During that time, I made an honest mistake and took a pain-reducing anti-inflammatory pill that is not approved. I feel horrible and recognize that I'm responsible for what I put in my body.'
Portis took the painkiller 'unintentionally,' said his agent, Mark Bartelstein. Portis thought he was taking Toradol, which is approved and which he has taken before, Bartelstein said in details first given to ESPN and later confirmed to The Associated Press. Portis did not realize he was taking Tramadol — which was properly prescribed but is on the NBA's banned substance list.
'I am deeply disappointed that the NBA chooses to interpret its policy so strictly and that the policy does not allow for a different result for an honest mistake with pure intentions,' Bartelstein said in the statement. 'Bobby loves being a part of the NBA and he loves being a role model and a true ambassador for the Bucks and the city of Milwaukee.
'This has been incredibly difficult for him, but he will accept this penalty with grace and turn this into a great opportunity to improve and further build his reputation and performance in every way, both on and off the court.'
Portis, considered one of the league's tougher players and a key part of the Bucks rotation, is averaging 13.7 points and 8.3 rebounds this season playing mostly off the bench. He's in his fifth season in Milwaukee after beginning his career with the Chicago Bulls in 2015.
The 30-year-old Portis will lose $2,858,701 in salary because of the suspension, which comes with the Bucks starting post-All-Star-break play fifth in the Eastern Conference — one game behind the No. 4 Indiana Pacers, one game ahead of the No. 6 Detroit Pistons and 3½ games ahead of the No. 7 Orlando Magic.
It's a blow to the Bucks, who are 21-10 when Portis scores at least 10 points this season. When he doesn't, they're 8-14 — and entering Thursday, they're 2-5 this season when he doesn't play, with all five losses by at least 10 points.
'This is a very difficult set of circumstances for Bobby and our team,' Bucks general manager Jon Horst said in a statement. 'He and the Bucks organization respect the NBA/NBAPA Anti-Drug Program and will accept what's been handed down.
'But we 100% support Bobby. Together we will take this opportunity to grow and will have a better and stronger Bobby and Milwaukee Bucks team. He's an integral part of who we are, a huge member of the Milwaukee community, and we look forward to his return.'
The suspension happens just when the Bucks appeared on the verge of getting their full roster together after making multiple moves at the trade deadline, including the trade of three-time All-Star wing Khris Middleton to the Washington Wizards.
Two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo missed the Bucks' last six games before the All-Star break with a strained left calf, but he practiced Wednesday and is questionable for Thursday's game. Antetokounmpo still hasn't played alongside new Bucks Kyle Kuzma, Kevin Porter Jr. and Jericho Sims, who joined the team at the deadline.
Portis spoke to the media after practice Wednesday and was asked how much he was looking forward to seeing how the team might fare once everyone was available.
'The trade deadline was a couple of weeks ago and we are just now being able to see what it looks like,' he said. 'It's kind of fun for us going forward, especially just to pick the game apart, figure out what everybody does well and try to make it mold into one.'
Portis is in his 10th NBA season. He was part of the Bucks' 2021 championship team and played for USA Basketball at the 2023 World Cup in Manila. He's one of four remaining players from the championship squad along with Antetokounmpo, Brook Lopez and Pat Connaughton.
'From the bottom of my heart, I want to apologize to the Bucks organization, my teammates, coaches, family and fans,' Portis said in his statement. 'I give everything I have on the court and will terribly miss playing games for the Bucks during this time. I will continue to work hard and be ready for our long playoff run. Thank you for your support. I appreciate it more than you know.'

'Difficult decision': Alex de Minaur opens up amid sad admission about fiancee

Alex de Minaur has made a sad revelation about his break from tennis and says even fiancee Katie Boulter couldn't help snap him out of a recent funk. De Minaur admits he was left 'mentally drained' and 'fatigued' after a brutal exit at the French Open last month, and needed some time out from the sport after deciding not to defend his Rosmalen grass-court title in the Netherlands. The eye-opening move sees de Minaur lose valuable ranking points, pushing him outside the top-10 where he's been an almost ever-present fixture for more than eight months. The decision could affect his seeding for the upcoming Wimbledon championships and make life more difficult for Australia's top-ranked male at the All England Club. But de Minaur insists he was in such urgent need of a break after struggling mentally and physically in the wake of his heartbreaking French Open exit. The Aussie suffered an extraordinary loss from two-sets up, going down in five sets to 62nd-ranked opponent, Alexander Bublik, in a shocking capitulation. "Obviously, I'm doing a lot better now," de Minaur told AAP at the prestigious Queen's Club, where he returns to action against Czech Jiri Lehecka on Tuesday. The Aussie said he needed a 'reset' from the sport and a 'week of doing nothing' related to tennis, and that even a hit-out with his fiancee on the London grass courts failed to lift his spirits. RELATED: Boulter drops unexpected news about de Minaur amid heartbreak 'Pure class': Carlos Alcaraz move lauded amid historic scenes "After Roland Garros, it was definitely a week of doing nothing, having nothing to do with tennis. That's very rare for me, very rare. I can't remember the last time I did that," de Minaur revealed. "It felt quite weird because I did try to help Katie as a hitting partner in practice and I just didn't enjoy it at all. And I was like 'I can't remember the last time I haven't enjoyed having a hit on the grass'. "So that was a little bit of a false start, and then I decided to take three more days off and since then, I've been building and feeling better and better, and now I'm very excited to get started." De Minaur said it was important for him to live the life of a "normal human being" again and was just happy to go out for coffees and dinners, as well as visiting parks to relieve the stress. "Anything I would define as being a normal human being and having a normal human being's life, instead of obsessing about tennis 24/7," he said. "In a way, the defeat (at the French Open) helped me kind of get a little bit of perspective on why certain things were happening. I realised I was quite mentally drained out and fatigued. "So I've used these two weeks since to disconnect from the game a little bit and make sure I come back to competing with the same energy that I'm known for." De Minaur has been able to enjoy having a base in London with Boulter for the whole month and says it's helped put him "in the right headspace" again, even if the decision not to defend his grass-court title in the Netherlands could come back to bite him. "It was a difficult decision not to defend my title, but it wasn't only the mind, but the body that was a little battered up. My shoulder didn't feel amazing," he said. "But the way I looked at it - and what is healthy for me - is to stop obsessing about rankings and whether I go up or go down every week, and try to go back to a place where I'm just enjoying playing tennis and not thinking about all those outside factors, because it just gives added stress. "I've got to start having a little bit more of a mentality of a big player and start backing myself to not have to play so many tournaments, and to hopefully do well in the big events. Mentally, I do feel I'm in the right spot, and even if it doesn't bring results this week, I'm confident that it will help me in the long run." with agencies

Magic Trade for $197 Million Star, Swap Underperforming $66 Million Vet Plus Haul

Magic Trade for $197 Million Star, Swap Underperforming $66 Million Vet Plus Haul originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Orlando Magic were coming into the offseason thinking of ways they could get better. For the past two seasons, they've made the playoffs but have been eliminated in the first round. Going forward, it's obvious they want things to change. Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner are the two stars on the team, and they've been doing all they can to lead the Magic to the postseason for two straight years. Advertisement In order to compete in the Eastern Conference, the Magic knew they would have to improve their roster, and if that meant making a trade, then it seemed like they'd be ready to do it. Orlando Magic guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope looks to pass the ball as Memphis Grizzlies guard Desmond Bane Thomas-Imagn Images Well, look no further, because that's what they did on Sunday morning, acquiring Desmond Bane from the Memphis Grizzlies. "BREAKING: The Memphis Grizzlies are trading Desmond Bane to the Orlando Magic for Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Cole Anthony, four unprotected first-round picks and one first-round pick swap, sources tell ESPN," Shams Charania wrote on X, formerly Twitter. The Magic now have another solid starter on the team, as Bane can shoot, defend and make plays for others on the court. Bane averaged 19.2 points, 6.1 rebounds and 5.3 assists in 69 games this season Advertisement For the Grizzlies, they get two key role players that can help them compete in the Western Conference and four draft picks. Bane is still playing on a five-year, $197 million contract, and the Magic did what they had to do to acquire the star. It seemed as if whatever deal they were going to make for somebody, Caldwell-Pope would be involved, as he's making $66 million on his three-year deal.
