Melaka records 666 online scam cases, RM19.52mil total losses since January
ALOR GAJAH: A total of 666 online scam cases involving losses of about RM19.52mil were reported in Melaka from Jan 1 to Sunday (April 20).
State science, technology, innovation and digital communications committee chairman Datuk Fairul Nizam Roslan said 157 cases were recorded by the National Scam Response Centre and 509 by the police.
He said the scams involved various tactics, including online purchases, love scams and non-existent investments, with victims ranging from single mothers and civil servants to private sector employees.
"During the same period, 399 arrests were made and 231 charges filed.
"Most victims were aged 25 to 40. Women were mainly targeted in love scams and online shopping fraud, while men fell victim to fake investments," he said on Sunday night.
Fairul Nizam, who is also Rembia state constituency coordinator, was met at the constituency's Aidilfitri open house attended by over 5,000 visitors.
He added that nine cases were reported on Sunday alone, with eight in Melaka Tengah and one in Alor Gajah, involving losses of over RM400,000.
The state government, he said, is stepping up efforts to combat online fraud through talks, exhibitions and the establishment of the Online Gambling, Fraud and Cybercrime Task Force to raise public awareness. - Bernama

Jobless jailed, fined for hurting son

Kota Kinabalu: A 43-year-old jobless was jailed six years and fined RM2,000 in default three months for causing hurt to his son with a wooden stick. In mitigation, Shahmar who was not represented asked for a lenient sentence. Advertisement However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Afiqah Alya urged the court to impose a heavy sentence to deter and give a lesson not only to Shahmar but public at large from committing such offence. The court heard that while the son was in the kitchen Shahmar came from behind and hit him with wood on his shoulder, head and right leg. The victim's mother then tried to stop Shahmar who suddenly took a machete and threatened the victim with the weapon. Processing, sale of ketum juice: 4 arrested in Kota Belud

KOTA BELUD: Four men aged between 20 and 50 were arrested in separate raids across several villages in the district for suspected involvement in the processing and sale of ketum juice. Kota Belud District Police Chief Supt Shahrudin Mat Husain said a team from the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division of Kota Belud District Police Headquarters (IPD) conducted the raids from May 24 to June 5. Advertisement He said the arrests were made following intelligence gathering in Kampung Taun Gusi, Tampasuk 1, Kampung Suang Punggur, Kampung Pintasan and Kampung Ambong. 'The first arrest involved a man at a house in Kampung Pintasan at 11.30am, along with the seizure of eight bottles containing 1.5 litres of ketum juice. 'In the second raid at 3.25pm at a house in Kampung Taun Gusi, a man was arrested along with 24 bottles, each containing 1.5 litres of ketum juice,' he said. On June 5, a raid was conducted at a house in Kampung Ambong where another two men were arrested along with 10 bottles containing 1.5 litres of ketum juice. 'Further investigations revealed that the ketum juice was sold to customers at RM25 to RM30 per bottle,' he said. Child among 16 held in killing probe
THE military has arrested a six-year-old child as part of a group blamed for the daytime killing of a retired military officer and diplomat last month, a junta-run newspaper reported. Cho Htun Aung, 68, a retired brigadier general who also served as an ambassador, was shot dead in Myanmar's commercial capital of Yangon on May 22, in one of the highest profile assassinations in a country in the throes of a widening civil war. 'A total of 16 offenders – 13 males and three females – were arrested,' the Global New Light of Myanmar newspaper reported yesterday. In an accompanying graphic, the newspaper carried the image of the six-year-old, identified as the daughter of the alleged assassin. Her face was blurred in an online version of the newspaper seen by Reuters, but visible in other social media posts made by junta authorities. A junta spokesperson did not respond to calls seeking comment. Golden Valley Warriors, an anti-junta insurgent group, said they killed the retired general because of his continued support for military operations, including attacks on civilians, according to a May 22 statement. The junta claims the group is backed by the National Unity Government – a shadow government comprising of remnants of Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi's ousted administration that is battling the military – and paid an assassin some 200,000 Myanmar kyat (RM400) for a killing, the state newspaper reported. NUG spokesperson Nay Phone Latt denied the shadow government had made any such payments. 'It is not true that we are paying people to kill other people'. Myanmar has been in turmoil since the military seized power in a 2021 coup, overthrowing the elected government and triggering widespread protests. The junta's violent crackdown on dissent sparked an unprecedented nationwide uprising.
