Google, Spotify and other major platforms down in massive internet outage
Much of the internet appears to have broken, with Spotify, Google, Snap and Discord all hit by major issues.
The problem appears to be related to technical issues at Google Cloud, which provides the infrastructure that powers much of the internet.
Many Google products – such as Search, Gmail, Maps, Meet, Nest and others – were hit by the problems, according to tracking website Down Detector.
But it also affected third-party websites; which may rely on Google's tools. That includes Snapchat, Discord, Spotify, the Pokémon trading card game and artificial intelligence tool Character.ai.
Etsy, Shopify, UPS, Roblox and others also seemed to be affected by problems. Other web infrastructure platforms such as Cloudflare were also hit by problems, though Cloudflare itself was not affected, a spokesperson said.
The problems appeared widespread, affecting vast numbers of users across the world, according to Down Detector. Google indicated on a tracking page that all of its regions had been hit by the problems.
Issues began around 7pm UK time, or 2pm eastern. Shortly after, Google said that it was aware of the problems — but it took hours before it was able to begin a full recovery.
Google Cloud's status website showed a vast array of issues across the world. Many of the technologies that third-party companies rely on to provide services were broken, it said.
It apologised to 'all who are affected by the disruption'. It did not give any information about what had caused the problems – only that it had 'identified the root cause' and had 'applied appropriate mitigations'.
At around 9pm in the UK, or 4pm eastern, the company said that it had found the issue and applied a fix. But it noted that there could still be issues and that it did not know when a full recovery would happen.
People on social media were not happy to find that their favorite platforms were down.
'How spotify gonna be down when i am at the gym what tf am i supposed to do now,' one X user wrote.
Another posted: 'Is this the end of the internet? how is everything down… AWS, Google Firebase, Cloudflare.'
'GUYS INTERNET IS COOKED Wtf do i do without discord and spotify im extremely bored, i cant even work google drive is down,' a third wrote.

June 13 - Tech stocks tracked broader markets lower as Middle East tensions rose. The iShares Expanded Tech-Software Sector ETF slipped about 1%, while the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell about 2%. Among large-cap names, Google (NASDAQ:GOOGL) and Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) each dropped about 1%, and Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) slid about 1%. Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META) was little changed, and Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) also saw minimal movement. Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) showed modest gains but remained within a narrow range. Palantir (NASDAQ:PLTR) bucked the trend, climbing about 1%, possibly on its ties with defense contracts. (NASDAQ:MNDY) declined about 3%, reflecting sensitivity to geopolitical uncertainty. IBM (NYSE:IBM) and Kyndryl Holdings (NYSE:KD) each edged down about 1%. The S&P 500, Nasdaq Composite, and Dow all retreated roughly 1% as investors weighed the impact of Israel's strikes on Iran. The effects of the attack have cascaded across global markets, with a strong risk-off move for several asset classes, said Deutsche Bank's Henry Allen. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, This operation will continue for as many days as it takes to remove this threat, underscoring uncertainty. Spotify is adding the ability to remotely download playlists to secondary devices
Spotify is rolling out a new feature that lets Premium subscribers remotely download playlists to additional devices. For instance, a user could initiate a download on an iPhone for an iPad or for a backup phone ahead of a trip. That's all fine and good, and useful in limited circumstances. The big news here, however, is that this functionality also works with smartwatches, with integration for Wear OS devices and Apple Watch models. Nothing ruins a good walk or run like forgetting to download a playlist, so this lets people square that away whenever they think of it, even when the secondary device is out of reach. Spotify is also introducing a new "Manage Downloads" button to assist with the aforementioned feature. This button accompanies playlists and provides a list of devices in which a particular batch of songs has been downloaded. That way folks can be sure they aren't reaching Spotify's five-device limit the company places on downloads. This stuff is rolling out right now for users across the globe. It could take a few weeks to reach everyone. A version of this tool has previously been available for Apple Watch users, but this is the first time something like this will be available to those in the Wear OS ecosystem. Spotify has been busy lately. The platform recently opened up an audiobook shop for iOS users and unveiled a dedicated Following feed for podcasts .

Google confirmed there was a massive Google Cloud outage affecting those other services and more. The Times of India reports that Alphabet's Google Cloud experienced a widespread outage, affecting tens of thousands of users across various platforms. According to reports, platforms such as Spotify, YouTube, Google Meet, Snapchat, Shopify, Discord, and Switch all suffered some form of service disruptions. The company wrote on its status page, 'Our engineers are continuing to mitigate the issue, and we have confirmation that the issue has recovered in some locations.' Google did not provide a time for a resolution at the time. Per Times of India: Downdetector, which tracks outages based on user reports, recorded over 10,000 incidents related to Google Cloud and more than 44,000 reports for Spotify around 2:46 p.m. ET in the U.S. Additionally, users reported over 4,000 incidents each for Google Meet and Google Search, and more than 8,000 for Discord.
