Zimbabwean students showcase language skills at Chinese proficiency contest
Drawing participants from primary schools, high schools, and colleges, the competition consisted of a speech in Chinese and a talent show.
Kudakwashe Makoni, a student of political science and diplomacy at the University of Zimbabwe, stood out with his grasp of the Chinese language and knowledge of Chinese culture.
He told Xinhua that the Chinese language serves not only as a practical skill to learn in a globalized world, but also as a bridge between the two countries.
"Learning Chinese provides huge opportunities for Zimbabweans. You can get scholarships to study in China, and also, with the rapidly growing Chinese economy, there is an opportunity for trade, so we can leverage the opportunity to create an amicable relationship between Zimbabwe and China," he said.
Thandeka Risinamhodzi, a high school student from Harare, was elated to be crowned the champion in the high school students' segment.
"Chinese is a very exciting language that you can learn. Learning Chinese benefits in many ways, like in Zimbabwe, most things involve the Chinese, like job opportunities," she said.
Makoni and Risinamhodzi will represent Zimbabwe at the international finals of the "Chinese Bridge" competition in China later this year.
In his address to the contest, Attwell Mamvuto, pro-vice-chancellor for academic affairs and administration at the University of Zimbabwe, said the competition not only celebrates linguistic excellence, but also marks the enduring friendship and cooperation between the two countries.
"Learning a new language opens doors to new opportunities, fosters understanding, and builds bridges between people from different backgrounds. The Chinese language, with its rich history and vast number of speakers, is a particularly valuable asset. It also augurs well with the University of Zimbabwe's strategic thrust on the internationalization agenda as well as academic and cultural exchanges," he said.
Chinese Ambassador to Zimbabwe Zhou Ding said the growing number of Zimbabweans learning Chinese demonstrates the language's global prominence and the importance and vitality of the enduring partnership between China and Zimbabwe.
"This year, as we celebrate the 45th anniversary of China-Zimbabwe diplomatic relations, which are rooted in solidarity, shared aspiration, and mutual benefit, we also celebrate decades of our joint achievements, which include the robust educational and cultural collaboration between our two countries," Zhou added.

Kenya launches patrol boat to boost wildlife conservation
NAIROBI, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) on Wednesday commissioned a modern patrol boat for Sibiloi National Park in an effort to bolster the protection of Lake Turkana in the northwest region of the country. Erustus Kanga, director general of KWS, told journalists in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi that the water vessel, donated by its partners, is equipped with modern sonar and radar technologies. "The boat will play a critical role in strengthening surveillance, deterring illegal activities, protecting fisheries, and ensuring the safety of both wildlife and communities whose livelihoods depend on the lake's fragile ecosystem," Kanga said. He revealed that the boat will improve safety for KWS rangers while enhancing their ability to secure Lake Turkana by enabling timely patrols. He observed that beyond security, the patrol boat is expected to open new horizons for tourism in northern Kenya through offering safer access to the lake and national park. Mekuria Argaw, executive director of the Horn of Africa Regional Environmental Center and Network, emphasized the importance of protecting both the water body and wildlife park, as they are connected to wildlife parks in Ethiopia.

Hani Terraced Fields: A Paradise Harboring Ingenious Technology
BEIJING, CHINA - Media OutReach Newswire – 20 August 2025 – The year 2025 marks the 40th anniversary of China's accession to the World Heritage Convention, a milestone that highlights the country's commitment to preserving its cultural and natural treasures. Among these jewels, the Hani Terraced Fields in Yuanyang County of Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture, southwest China's Yunnan Province, stand as a breathtaking testament to the harmonious coexistence of humanity and nature. Nestled on mountain slopes with the gradient ranging from 15 to 75 degrees, the terraces cascade in stunning layers and can include as many as 3,000 steps. Over a thousand years ago, the ancestors of the Hani people migrated from the north to a valley in southern China. Despite the challenging natural environment, they made the most of the mountains and waters. The Hani people cultivated over 1 million mu (approximately 66,666.67 hectares) of rice terraces, some situated at elevations exceeding 2,000 meters, according to Ma Chongwei, a professor of Yunnan University. No matter how high the mountain, water finds its way. The Hani people constructed thousands of channels to divert streams. These channels wind through villages and terraced fields before merging with rivers in the valleys. Channel maintainers oversee the water channels, keeping them clean and ensuring proper flow. For over a thousand years, the Hani people have used water allocation tools to distribute water into a network of irrigation channels and ditches, showcasing their farming wisdom. Throughout the long agrarian era, the Hani people transformed mountains and rivers, sharing this landscape with the Yi, Dai and other Chinese ethnic groups living downhill. Deeply integrated into the ethnic culture, the terraces have now become the eternal spiritual homeland of the Hani people. In the terraces lies a harmonious coexistence of humanity and nature, the agrarian wisdom attuned to natural rhythms and an enduring spirit of perseverance.
