Ferrari legend speaks out after quietly joining rivals McLaren

Daily Mirror29-06-2025
Luca di Montezemolo spent more than 30 years as president of Ferrari until he felt the company in 2014, so eyebrows were raised when it was revealed he had joined McLaren
Former Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo insists his heart "will always remain red" despite having joined McLaren. A document from Companies House reveals that the Italian businessman was, on June 27, appointed as a director of McLaren Group Holdings Ltd.
He is the ninth current director of the firm which is in control of McLaren's road car business. The holding company also has a minority stake in McLaren Group under which the Formula 1 team falls, though Di Montezemolo is not expected to have any say on the team's activities.

And he confirmed that would be the case in a statement, after news of his new McLaren role became public knowledge. The 77-year-old said: "My heart is and will always remain red, I have become a member of the board of directors of McLaren Automotive which produces road cars, and does not deal with Formula 1."

Di Montezemolo's arrival is the latest during a period of significant change at the road car business. He is not even the only new director in the last week, as McLaren Group chairman Paul Walks was also appointed a few days earlier.
Serving alongside them on that board is Nick Collins who, in May, was installed as chief executive of McLaren Automotive. The significant shuffling of personnel comes after MA was taken over by CYVN Holdings, an investment company based in Abu Dhabi, in April.
But it is another country in the Middle East which is in charge of McLaren Racing. That arm of the business, which operates their F1 team as well as motorsport projects in other racing series, is majority owned by the sovereign wealth fund of Bahrain, Mumtalakat.
Di Montezemolo's involvement in the road car business begins more than a decade since his exit from Ferrari. He resigned as president and chairman in 2014, having held the former role since 1991 when the Italian firm was struggling both in terms of its F1 competitiveness and financial stability.

But over the course of the 1990s, he oversaw a transformation which led to Ferrari's debts being cleared and the company return to profit. And, in 1999, Scuderia Ferrari won the F1 constructors' title for the first time in 16 years.
By that time, they had already recruited Jean Todt to lead the racing outfit, under Di Montezemolo's direction, and signed Michael Schumacher who was already a double F1 champion with Benetton by that point. It ended up being a special combination which led to five consecutive drivers' titles between 2000 and 2004.
Di Montezemolo recently said he felt "big pain" at Ferrari's current position – they have not won the F1 title since 2008. "Today I see a team without real leadership, without spirit and without passion," he complained.

New CBL Tripoli HQ construction project inaugurated – 11 years after it was announced

‎Over 11 years after the project was first announced, Naji Issa, Governor of the Central Bank of Libya (CBL), inaugurated the CBL's construction project for its new headquarters in the Gurji area of Tripoli last Monday (11 August), in the presence of several CBL department heads and notaries. In its information and marketing video for the project, the CBL says this comes as a step to bring the CBL's departments together in one integrated independent facility like the rest of the central banks of the world. It said this will end an era in which the employees of the various departments suffered due to their scattered presence in several different areas in the city of Tripoli.‎ The CBL says design of the new building is inspired by the ancient cave homes dug into the Western/Nesfusa Mountains. It is designed according to the latest approved engineering standards to be the first building of its kind in Libya to obtain the golden accreditation for environmentally friendly buildings. Its modern systems, it adds, consider the digital transformation strategy, making the project a symbol of the independence of the CBL, as an independent sovereign institution.‎ Specifically, the new 50,000-square-metre headquarters will occupy an area over 5 hectares with a car park with a capacity of 1,100. It will be able to house the 1,000 employees of the CBL's 30 departments, its training centre, a library and a clinic. Danish architects Henning Larsen win design competition It will be recalled that in April 2014, and as reported then by Libya Herald, it was announced that the design of Danish architects, Henning Larsen, won the competition for the build of the new CBL headquarters. Henning Larsen beat off competition from 22 other international and local designers to win the contract. The project will bring together CBL offices that have been scattered around the capital, since the bank's iconic headquarters building on the coastal side of the Medina (Old City), has long been unable to house all departments. Although no cost has been revealed, it may be indicative to know that a plan published in 2008 to build a new Italian-designed CBL bank HQ on the-then Green, now Martyrs' Square, was costed then at €98 million. Henning Larsen, in announcing their success, have emphasised the environmental and low-energy credentials of their design which involves offices built around a slightly angled atrium. The architects explained: 'By using and re-interpreting specifics of the Libyan nature and culture the new headquarters of the Central Bank of Libya will be a symbol of the new Libya, both for the local as well as the global community. 'We believe that the Central Bank of Libya must project an image of authority, solidity and security. At the same time, the Central Bank of Libya plays a crucial role in Libya's economic growth, and as such, it should project a forward thinking, dynamic attitude, that grasps opportunities.'

New restaurant planned in leafy suburb that has been named one of Wales' best Plans have been submitted to turn a former clothes shop in Rhiwbina, Cardiff , into a new Italian deli and restaurant The former Little People Store clothes shop in Rhiwbina, Cardiff, could soon be home to a restaurant (Image: Google Street View) The site of a former baby and children's clothing shop in Cardiff has been earmarked for plans to open a new Italian deli and restaurant. An application to transform the former Little People Store on Heol y Deri, Rhiwbina, is yet to be decided by Cardiff Council and is currently in the consultation phase. ‌ However, the applicant's vision for the restaurant has been published on the council's website. ‌ David Thomas said the deli side of the business will offer prosciutto, salami , artisan cheeses , olives, olive oil and wine. Never miss a Cardiff story and sign up to our newsletter here. ‌ Shedding light on the restaurant, Mr Thomas added: 'I myself will be making use of my eight and half years of experience in Tuscany to cook real authentic Italian recipes using some produce imported directly from Italy and also using the fantastic local producers South Wales has to offer. 'My idea is to use the very same ingredients we use in the restaurant and actually make them available to buy from the on-site deli. 'For example if a customer really enjoyed the cheese or the wine they had that night, they can then also purchase the same produce at the deli to take away with them after their meal.' Article continues below Rhiwbina was recently named one of the best places in Wales to live (Image: Jo Ridout, WalesOnline) Mr Davies also suggested that he would like to work collaboratively with the community and other businesses in the area. In his application to the council, he said he 'would love the opportunity' to work with the allotments adjacent the premises 'to give a… 'farm to table' idea for some items/dishes on the restaurant menu'. ‌ The application also hints at the possibility of future working relationships with Wine Republic and Pettigrew Bakery, who also have premises in the suburb that was recently named one of the best places in Wales to live. Mr Thomas said: 'While the business might not be the biggest restaurant in Cardiff I am certainly looking to make it one of the best and offer something that I think really represents real quality and passion.' At the rear of the property, there is parking provision for six vehicles. Article continues below The proposal at the moment is for the business to open from Tuesday to Saturday. However, the applicant said he would like to open up one Sunday every month for an all-Italian style roast dinner and aperitivo.

Jadon Sancho's Man Utd exit in jeopardy as one demand holds transfer up

Man United outcast Jadon Sancho is running out of time to seal a move away from Old Trafford amid interest from Roma and Besiktas but one issue is putting a transfer in risk Jadon Sancho's huge pay packet is putting a Manchester United escape in danger. The winger has little future at Old Trafford after falling out of favour under Ruben Amorim. ‌ He was expected to complete a £25m move to Chelsea following his loan spell last season but the Blues backed out of that agreement. Italian giants Roma had emerged as suitors over recent days. ‌ As per reports in Italy, the Serie A side have agreed a €23million (£19.8m) deal for Sancho and while United are happy with that fee, Sancho's own demands are holding up a deal, as per Mail Online. ‌ The former Borussia Dortmund man banks around £250k per week at Old Trafford, which sees him earn around £13m per year. Roma are not willing to pay that amount, hence the reason for the hold up. They have been attempting to convince Sancho to sign a five-year deal at the Stadio Olimpico to spread out that amount, but he is yet to agree to those terms at the time of writing. Speaking out recently, Roma boss Gian Piero Gasperini has urged more additions but admitted that the club are limited by financial constraints. He said: 'This is a team that has quality and we must try to improve it along with the club. There is great clarity with the club and we share ideas on what needs to be done. 'We'll see what happens over the next two weeks. Koné is undoubtedly a very good player, it would be a loss. We must see what we can do from now to the end of the transfer session, because everyone knows the Financial Fair Play situation.' He added: 'We've not had anything new coming in for three weeks now. If possible, we should get some new players without losing them. ‌ 'I have been very clear with the club on what needs to be done. Now we just hope that we can do it.' Away from Roma, Besiktas have also been linked with a swoop for Sancho. And club president Serdal Adali has admitted that he is keen to get a deal done before next month's deadline. ‌ 'Just as much as the community wants him, I want him too,' he told Turkiye Today. 'What matters is not only our desire, but also if the player wants to come to Turkey. We have a budget, and we will do our best to bring him here. 'Players like Jadon Sancho usually prefer clubs playing in the Champions League. Whether it happens today or not, it is hard to say. If it is possible, we will get him. Besiktas fans can rest assured.'
