SINGAPORE – Mandarin Oriental, Singapore's Chinese restaurant Cherry Garden has undergone a revamp and, since July 2, is relaunched as Cherry Garden by Chef Fei.
The 52-year-old Chaoshan-born chef – whose name is Huang Jing Hui – is no stranger to Mandarin Oriental, as the chef-consultant for its sister properties across Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Jakarta, Beijing and Bangkok.
His Guangzhou establishment, Jiang by Chef Fei, holds two Michelin stars and One Diamond in China's Black Pearl Restaurant Guide.
While he is not based in Singapore, the charismatic chef has played an instrumental role in overhauling and elevating the restaurant's menu and training the team, which includes 39-year-old chef de cuisine Steven Luo from Guangzhou, who helms the kitchen here.
Several dishes in the extensive menu here are similar to the ones at Jiang by Chef Fei, such as seared Xisha Island lobster with creamy garlic sauce (seasonal price) and crispy pork with sweet and sour sauce ($36).
There is a strong focus on seafood dishes and two of them are worth splashing out for. One is the geoduck blanched with basil and chilli in a rich chicken broth (seasonal price). The other is the signature boneless crucian carp congee ($138++ a portion), in which the fish is meticulously deboned and cooked gently in a comforting porridge. The congee is also available on the dim sum menu at $18++ a portion.

Meat lovers can go for the sauteed diced wagyu beef with Sichuan peppercorn and chilli ($108++ a portion) or splurge on the most refined double-boiled pork tripe soup with fish maw and white pepper ($360++ a portion).

A key concern among many Singaporeans is whether these Mandarin-language programmes might reduce available slots that could be allocated to local students, who already compete for limited university places after A-levels or polytechnic diplomas. Some have expressed their dismay over the 'alleged' inconsistency with Singapore's long-standing emphasis on English as the lingua franca. One netizen wrote: 'Honestly, it doesn't make sense when our main mode of communication in Singapore is English, to offer a Chinese-speaking programme — especially if it's meant to secure employment here, where you're expected to speak English. Unless you plan to work in Chinese-only companies [operating in Singapore], which is a different issue altogether.' Another comment raised concerns about inclusivity and racial equality: 'This feels like we're bending over backwards to cater to Chinese-speaking students. Why are there no programmes offered in Malay or Tamil? Our parents, who spoke only dialects or mother tongues, had to learn English to integrate — now this feels like we're reversing that effort. Aren't we supposed to be a multiracial, English-speaking society?' A broader trend, not a new phenomenon Mandarin-medium degrees are not something new. In the past, postgraduate degrees that required Mandarin were typically confined to fields like Chinese studies, teaching, or the humanities. However, the latest development sees Mandarin-taught programmes expanding into fields such as business, entrepreneurship, innovation, mathematics, and engineering. University officials and policymakers have not yet provided detailed responses to public concerns. Chinese e-commerce giant, Alibaba, has finally made an official entry into the smart eyewear market by announcing its new Quark AI glasses. The company showcased the product at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) in Shanghai. These glasses are designed to be compatible with Alibaba's expanding AI ecosystem. X The smart glasses are able to translate in real time, make hands-free payments, scan products, and provide turn-by-turn navigation. You can scan QR codes to pay for things on Alipay, compare the prices on Taobao, or get around using Amap. They feature music playback, live transcription, hands-free calls, and an integrated camera. This is the first major step of Alibaba into AI wearables. Local players like Xreal and Rokid have already had comparable products. Global brands like Meta are also competing with smart glasses, like the Ray-Ban Meta. Alibaba is using its own AI models, apps, and platforms to power the glasses. Quark AI glasses are built around Qualcomm's Snapdragon AR1 chip, which was designed for augmented reality. A second chip with low power handles lighter jobs. The glasses are also powered by Android and RTOS (Real-Time Operating System). The appearance of the design has also been upgraded. The glasses have arms 40% thinner than the usual ones. The frames are lightweight, making them suitable for daily use. The price and launch date have not been confirmed, but Alibaba said the product is ready for market and will be sold in China by the end of 2025. Alibaba also teamed up earlier this year with RayNeo, an AR glasses manufacturer. This partnership also allows for more wearable devices to utilize Alibaba's AI tools. The glasses will be powered by Alibaba's artificial intelligence assistant Quark, which has evolved from a simple app into a full assistant that operates much like ChatGPT or Google Gemini. Alibaba is also betting big on AI, with plans of investing $53 billion in AI infrastructure over three years.
