K'taka minister urges stronger govt-academia-industry ties
Speaking at the first anniversary celebration of the Bajaj Engineering Skills Training (BEST) Centre at PES University, he emphasised the importance of collaborative efforts to bridge the skill gap and empower youth.
"This collaboration between Bajaj Auto and PES University reflects public-private partnership at its best—where the strength of academia meets the precision of industry," the State Medical Education and Skill Development Minister was quoted as saying in an official statement.
Patil stressed that empowering youth, especially from underserved regions of Karnataka, is not just heartening but also a strategic investment in the state's future.
According to the official statement, the BEST Centre at PES University—a CSR initiative by Bajaj Auto Ltd—provides engineering students with advanced training in contemporary technologies such as mechatronics, motion control, robotics, Industry 4.O, and smart manufacturing.
In its first year, the programme trained 320 engineering students, all of whom secured employment with competitive salaries. Plans are underway to double student intake in the coming years.
Patil noted the success of the initiative, particularly its impact on students from the Kalyana and Kittur Karnataka regions, highlighting it as a model for uplifting youth from aspirational districts.
"Sometimes, governments must learn from successful industry models. The training imparted here is a shining example of how we can align education with employability," he added.

BEST takes 100 electric cars off roads over expired fitness, insurance papers
MUMBAI: In a major lapse, the Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) Undertaking has taken 100 of its 142 electric vehicles (EVs) off the roads after it was found that they were being operated without valid fitness certificates and insurance. The EVs, Tata Xpres-T sedans, were leased from a Nagpur-based private contractor for use by BEST officers and staff. 'We have initiated action and suspended use of 100 electric cars while their fitness certificates and insurance are being renewed. The remaining 42 vehicles meet all statutory requirements. We have also sought an explanation from the contractor,' said a BEST spokesperson. Ironically, many of these EVs were used by the administration itself—including officers responsible for overseeing vehicle compliance and safety—prompting sharp criticism from staff unions. 'The administration is playing with the lives of its own employees. It's shocking that vehicles without basic documents like insurance and fitness clearance were used for official duty. Those responsible must be held accountable,' said Shashank Sharad Rao, president of the BEST Workers' Union. Sources said the vehicles in question were registered between November 2022 and June 2023, and that the responsibility for ensuring all paperwork was in order lay with the contractor. Under the 15-year lease agreement, BEST pays ₹42,400 per car per month for the first 10 years and ₹28,407 per car per month for the remaining five years. The electric sedans are primarily used by staff to attend power failure complaints, inspect depots, and for other administrative duties. According to Rule 62 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, all commercial vehicles—including electric ones—must have a valid fitness certificate. Operating a vehicle without one can attract a penalty of ₹2,000– ₹5,000 for the first offence and up to ₹10,000 or imprisonment for repeat violations. Driving uninsured vehicles also attracts fines ranging from ₹2,000 to ₹4,000.

Jayakwadi dam gates open after storage crosses 90%
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: For the first time since 1979, the Jayakwadi dam has started discharging water in July, as its storage capacity crossed the 90%-mark. On Thursday, authorities opened a total of 18 gates by half-a-foot each, releasing 9,432 cusecs into the Godavari river. The opening of the gates at Jayakwadi, one of Asia's largest dams with as many as 27 gates, drew large crowds who were eager to witness the unusual spectacle. Security personnel were also present to ensure public safety and prevent people from getting too close to the surging water. Before the discharge commenced, water resources minister Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil performed the traditional "jalpoojan" ceremony. "Efforts will be made to divert 65 billion cubic feet of water from the Godavari, which would otherwise flow into the sea, to water-deficient regions. This initiative aligns with the CM's vision of making Maharashtra drought-free," he said. Following the water release, the administration has issued an alert to the villages situated along the banks of Godavari, advising them to remain vigilant. During the function, Shiv Sena MLA Vilas Bhumre demanded that the dam's water be supplied through a closed-pipeline system to prevent wastage. MLAs Ramesh Bornare, Himmat Udan, Vitthalrao Langhe and Vijaysingh Pandit, along with Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district collector Dilip Swami, water resources department executive director Santosh Tirmanwar, superintendent engineers Prashant Sant and Samadhan Sabbinwar were also present. Jayakwadi currently holds 95.15 TMC of water, with the storage level at 90.13%. On Thursday, the water level in the reservoir stood at 1,520.18 ft, with an inflow of 16,230 cusecs. "The discharge is being carried out as per the dam's reservoir regulation guidelines," said the authorities. Vikhe-Patil said govt is encouraging renewable energy projects such as a 12 MW hydropower unit and floating solar panels on the dam. He also announced Rs150 crore for the Brahm Gavhan lift irrigation scheme, promising its completion within a year. "Desilting of the Jayakwadi dam to enhance its storage capacity will also be taken up," he said.

Dr Abhay Patil, Cong's Akola candidate in 2024 LS polls, quits
Akola: Senior Congress leader and noted orthopaedic surgeon Dr Abhay Patil, who contested the 2024 Lok Sabha election on a Congress ticket, has quit the party. He announced his resignation through a Facebook post on Tuesday, stating that he is stepping down from the party's primary membership. The resignation sparked speculation within political circles, particularly due to its timing — coming shortly after the announcement of a new District Congress Committee. Sources claimed that Dr Patil was upset over not being consulted during the formation of the new leadership panel. But he cited personal reasons. "Being occupied with my medical profession and social work, I was unable to dedicate sufficient time to party activities. Holding a position without contributing actively is against my principle. Hence, I decided to step down," he said. He denied any dissatisfaction with the newly-appointed district committee. "There is no resentment. The party has always supported me and given me numerous opportunities," he said. In 2024, Dr Patil contested from Akola constituency as a Congress candidate. He secured 4,16,404 votes but lost to BJP 's Anup Dhotre. He is former general secretary of the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee and regional coordinator of Maratha Kranti Morcha for Akola and Washim. He is actively involved in various religious and social initiatives.
