BlackBerry expands Apac HQ to boost cyber-resilience

KUALA LUMPUR: BlackBerry Ltd is expanding its secure communications division's Asia Pacific (Apac) regional headquarters in Malaysia, reinforcing the company's long-term commitment to the nation and the broader Asean region. Following the successful launch of the MCMC and BlackBerry Cybersecurity Center of Excellence (CCoE) in Cyberjaya in March 2024, BlackBerry is now scaling its presence across three strategic locations: Cyberjaya, central Kuala Lumpur, and Mont Kiara. The expansion includes a new sales and marketing office, as well as a dedicated Regional Support Centre staffed by over 50 technical experts, enabling 24/7 support and professional services across the Asia-Pacific region. 'As Malaysia strengthens its position as a regional hub for digital resilience and innovation, we are proud to expand our Apac secure communications headquarters here – now with enhanced 24/7 support for a region tackling complex risks,' said BlackBerry in Apac senior vice-president Tash Stamatelos. He added that this expansion supports both BlackBerry's regional growth strategy and Malaysia's national priorities including capacity building, enhanced disaster response, and the implementation of sovereign, military-grade communications to combat rising espionage. This shared vision for bolstering digital resilience is echoed by Malaysia's regulators, with MCMC welcoming BlackBerry's expanded footprint as a catalyst for deeper public–private collaboration. Building on the MCMC and BlackBerry Cybersecurity Center of Excellence in Cyberjaya, the expansion strengthens Malaysia's position as a regional hub for secure communications while enhancing the nation's ability to support government, critical infrastructure, and industry against evolving cyber threats. Further building on Malaysia's growth as an international hub, this announcement follows Canada's government commitment of C$3.9 million (RM12 million) in multi-year investment for cybersecurity training at the Cybersecurity Centre of Excellence, announced at Apec in November 2024. The first phase of this programme will commence in November 2025 with the globally recognised Certifications for Leadership in Cybersecurity course. Additionally, a recent partnership with EC-Council will offer self-paced learning courses for Malaysian civil servants, further enhancing national cyber capabilities.

Malaysia internet coverage hits 98.82% with 5G expansion plans

KUALA LUMPUR: Internet and communication coverage in populated areas across Malaysia has reached 98.82 per cent as of July 31, according to Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. For 5G coverage, he said Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) has completed the construction of 7,489 transmitter sites, collectively providing 82.4 per cent coverage in populated areas. 'The number of 5G subscriptions has exceeded 28 million users, and the mobile 5G broadband penetration rate per 100 people stands at 82.7 per cent,' he said in reply to Datuk Dr Zulkafperi Hanapi (Tanjong Karang) at Dewan Rakyat today. Dr Zulkafperi had wanted to know the latest progress and details on the government's 5G rollout programme, as well as the strategies to further expand coverage into rural areas such as Sungai Burong, Sekinchan, and Permatang, with particular focus on those within the Tanjong Karang parliamentary constituency. Fahmi said that in Tanjong Karang, internet and communication coverage in populated areas stands at 99.75 per cent, while the Sungai Besar constituency has recorded a coverage rate of 99.99 per cent. Additionally, he noted that the second 5G network by U Mobile began operating on July 14, with 1,232 sites upgraded to support 5G coverage. On the JENDELA 1 initiative, Fahmi said it is expected to be fully completed by the end of 2025, while plans for JENDELA 2 are currently being reviewed and will be announced in the fourth quarter of 2025 by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). According to Fahmi, the planning process requires assessment of suitable service delivery methods that are fit-for-purpose, as well as the capability of the Universal Service Provision (USP) Fund to finance the project's capital and operational expenditures. 'The types of service delivery solutions currently under consideration are expected to include the construction of new towers and the provision of Internet services via satellite technology,' he explained. Meanwhile, Fahmi said MCMC has undertaken various efforts, including the implementation of the Safe Internet Campaign to raise public awareness, including among schoolchildren, about the dangers of online harm. He added that the ministry is also working on amending existing laws to promote more responsible Internet use and to ensure that crimes such as scams and cyberbullying can be effectively addressed. - Bernama

MCMC begins public consultation on regulatory framework for spam messages

PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission today commenced a two-week public consultation on the proposed Regulatory Framework for Unsolicited Commercial Electronic Messages (UCEM), commonly known as spam. In a statement, MCMC said the initiative is pursuant to Section 233A of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which was introduced following legislative amendments gazetted in February 2025. The proposed framework aims to strengthen consumer protection, promote responsible digital marketing practices, and foster a safer and more trustworthy digital ecosystem. In line with the new provision, MCMC is developing subsidiary legislation to establish a clear, coherent and enforceable structure to address the increasing prevalence of UCEM. The public consultation invites feedback from a wide range of stakeholders, including industry players, civil society organisations, consumer groups, lawmakers and members of the public. Stakeholders are invited to review the consultation document and provide feedback on the proposed regulatory approach during the consultation period from Aug 13 until 5pm on Aug 27. "This initiative reflects the commission's commitment to a transparent, inclusive, consultative and evidence-based policymaking process," MCMC said.
