Bhubaneswar: Puri king and chairman of Jagannath Temple managing committee, Gajapati Dibyasingha Deb, issued a fresh appeal to Iskcon on Sunday, urging them to observe Rath Yatra on the same date as the Puri shrine, scheduled for June 27.
In a letter to Iskcon's governing body commission, the Puri king conveyed his concerns regarding the varying dates of Debasnan Purnima and Rath Yatra celebrations at Iskcon temples in several countries abroad.
"I request your good self to ensure that no Iskcon temple performs the Snana yatra or Ratha yatra on a date/tithi not sanctioned by scriptures and tradition," Deb wrote.TNN

CP Radhakrishnan: Rise of a tested, trusted swayamsevak and BJP's V-P candidate

Born on October 20, 1957, in Tiruppur -- the 'knitwear capital of India' in Tamil Nadu's Kongu belt -- Radhakrishnan was drawn to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) early. At just 17, he joined the Bharatiya Jan Sangh, the political forerunner to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). A founding foot soldier of the BJP since its inception in 1980, Radhakrishnan has held multiple key roles in the party's Tamil Nadu unit, including State President (2004–07). His 19,000-km, 93-day Rath Yatra across Tamil Nadu during this period spotlighted issues ranging from river-linking and counter-terrorism to social reform and anti-drug campaigns. He later led two more padayatras for separate causes. Radhakrishnan entered Parliament from Coimbatore in 1998 and retained the seat in 1999. He contested the same constituency multiple times, finishing strong even in 2014 — when the BJP went solo, with nearly 3.9 lakh votes. During his time in Parliament, he served as Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Textiles and was a member of panels on PSUs, finance, and the stock exchange scam. Beyond politics, Radhakrishnan holds a BBA and made his mark as an entrepreneur. Between 1985 and 1998, he pioneered the export of 100% cotton knitted fabric to Bangladesh and developed textile links with countries across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. In administrative roles, he was Chairman of the Coir Board (2016–2020) and later BJP's Kerala in-charge (2020–22). His appointment as Governor of Jharkhand in February 2023 marked a transition from party politics to constitutional office. In his first four months as governor, Radhakrishnan toured all 24 districts. He briefly held additional charges as Governor of Telangana and Lt. Governor of Puducherry. Since July 2024, he has been Governor of Maharashtra. Known for his grassroots connect and political adaptability, Radhakrishnan has maintained cordial relations across party lines including recent gestures such as visiting Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin to inquire about his health. Though he has remained outspoken on national issues, Radhakrishnan ruled out any return to active politics. "An advocate after becoming a judge cannot go back to being an advocate... I don't think about returning to active politics," he said in a recent interview, drawing a parallel with his gubernatorial responsibilities. A tireless campaigner, a disciplined ideologue, and a seasoned parliamentarian, Radhakrishnan's elevation to the Vice-Presidency marks a symbolic coming-of-age for the BJP in Tamil Nadu, a state where the party still seeks a significant electoral breakthrough.

Janmashtami celebrated with religious fervor across city; Lord Krishna a source of inspiration for justice & duty: Delhi CM

New Delhi, Aug 16 (UNI) The festival of Janmashtami was celebrated with gaiety and religious fervor across the national capital today as devotees thronged temples decorated with flowers and lights. Since morning, the atmosphere at the temples in the city was full of enthusiasm with people visiting the places of worship where Lord Krishna hymns set the tone for the Janmashtami celebrations. Many observed fast on the occasion, while devotees decorated their puja rooms with flowers and offered sweets to celebrate the birth of Lord Krishna. One of the most noteworthy parts of the festival is the 'Janmashtami' tableaux, also referred to as the popular 'Jhankis,' cherished by people of all age groups, especially children. These artistic displays depicting Lord Krishna's life, especially those of his childhood were set up at temples across the city, showcasing various aspects of Krishna's life starting from his childhood, beautifully telling the story in a visual form. Meanwhile, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta also celebrated the auspicious festival with great devotion, offering prayers at temples across the national capital. Extending her heartfelt wishes to the people of Delhi, the CM prayed for peace, prosperity, good health and happiness for every citizen. Speaking on the occasion, Gupta said that the life and teachings of Lord Krishna remain a guiding light for humanity. She said that Lord Krishna's entire life inspires everyone to walk the path of righteousness, justice and duty. His message of courage, compassion and truth is timeless, and continues to show us the way forward even in difficult times, Gupta added. CM began the day's celebrations by visiting the ISKCON temple in East of Kailash, where she performed aarti, joined devotees in singing bhajans, and participated in the festivities. Later, Gupta visited Divya Jyoti Jagrati Sansthan (Qutubgarh), as well as temples in Prashant Vihar, Shalimar Bagh and other areas of Delhi. At these gatherings, she offered makhan-mishri (butter and sugar), swung the idol of child Krishna in a ceremonial cradle, and joined the devotional congregation. Reflecting on the significance of the festival, Gupta stated that Lord Krishna is not only a revered deity, but also a symbol of duty and truth. She said that through the Bhagavad Gita, he taught humanity the path of selfless action, equanimity and righteousness. Lord Krishna's life reminds everyone that patience, wisdom and courage in the face of adversity are the highest form of devotion, CM said. "If we imbibe His ideals, we can build a society rooted in love, compassion and harmony,' she observed. UNI APS RN
