Hotmail co-founder Sabeer Bhatia slams IIT-Madras director's comment on the benefits of cow urine

Mint15-07-2025
Hotmail co-founder Sabeer Bhatia has raised concerns over scientific credibility after a video of IIT-Madras Director V Kamakoti claiming cow urine has 'anti-bacterial and anti-fungal' properties went viral on social media.
Reacting to the clip on X (formerly Twitter), Bhatia wrote, 'Shocked by IIT Madras Director's viral video claiming cow urine is 'anti-bacterial, anti-fungal' with digestive benefits. If educated leaders spout this, how can we trust their decisions for elite institutions?'
The video in question, from a Maatu Pongal event held in Chennai earlier this year, shows Kamakoti narrating an anecdote about an ascetic who allegedly cured his fever by drinking cow urine.
'In 15 minutes, his fever subsided,' he said, adding that the practice has 'scientific backing'.
The remarks, originally made during the 'Go Samrakshana Sala' event on January 15, resurfaced online, reigniting criticism over pseudoscientific claims being made by heads of academic institutions. Kamakoti also spoke at the event about the importance of organic farming and the role of indigenous cow breeds in agriculture and the rural economy.
Bhatia's comment has triggered fresh debate on social media, with many questioning the line between tradition and science, while others defended Kamakoti's views as part of cultural belief systems.
A user wrote, 'Andh bhakti knows no borders …it thrives across regions, classes, and age groups.'
Another user commented, 'They have become educated by studying but their brain has not developed as expected. They have become so engrossed in religious faith that they have not been able to get out of the swamp of superstition.'
Soon after his tweet went viral, Bhatia asked, 'After my tweet on the IIT Director's cow urine wisdom went viral, I thought it was an isolated case. But wait — now I see a cop sipping straight from the source, actors endorsing it, and a guru swearing by it. Seriously… did I miss the national memo? Is this the new elixir of India?'
Earlier, the director's remarks had also drawn flak from political leaders and academics, who warned that such statements, made without medical consensus, risk undermining public trust in scientific research and education.

'His Health Is Absolutely Fine': Is Mamata Banerjee Sceptical About Dhankhar's Resignation?

Last Updated: Jagdeep Dhankhar's longtime political adversary, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed scepticism about his surprise resignation citing health issues and has declared him 'a healthy man". While Banerjee said she is unwilling to comment on Dhankhar's sudden exit, she said she believed that his condition is 'absolutely fine". Known for her frequent run-ins with him when he was Bengal governor from 2019 to 2022, she made the cryptic remarks during a press conference at the state secretariat Nabanna. She, however, like other opposition parties hinted there could be more to the development than what meets the eye. 'Political parties cannot decide why Mr Dhankhar resigned. I have no comments on the issue," Banerjee said. 'Let us watch. He is a healthy man. I think his health is absolutely fine." The chief minister's comments came amid a political firestorm over Dhankhar's decision to quit the post of vice president of India. Many in the opposition claimed that it was 'totally unexpected" and possibly driven by factors beyond the official line of 'prioritising health care". The usual effusive praise showered on an occupant of a high office on his departure was missing from the ruling alliance's side, an indication that the government was probably happy to see him go. It was the opposition, which had signed a notice to impeach him last year for his alleged biases, that had nice words for him. This was including the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) – a party that not only has a troubled history with Dhankhar but has since repeatedly mocked him and called him a 'government stooge". 'Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar's resignation. Is health the only reason? If so, get well soon. Otherwise, curiosity remains," said TMC leader Kunal Ghosh on X, a man known to be a bitter critic of Dhankhar in his gubernatorial role. Speaking to reporters later, Ghosh said: 'We do not wish to comment on this, as our top leadership is observing the situation. He has cited health reasons, so we wish him good health." Another senior TMC leader, Sushmita Dev said she was quite 'surprised" by Dhankhar's sudden decision. 'I did see some news that he was not keeping well. But one did not imagine that it was serious enough for him to step down. I thought he would go on leave, recover and come back, so I was quite surprised by his decision," she told a news channel. WHY DO DHANKHAR AND MAMATA SHARE A TENSE RELATIONSHIP? Dhankhar was a harsh critic of the Mamata Banerjee administration during his tenure as governor in the state and had often been at the centre of confrontations with the ruling party before being elevated as Vice President in 2022. The two share a deeply adversarial and politically charged relationship. In fact, some of their spats – often public and on social media – got so ugly that Banerjee even blocked him on X in January 2022, then known as Twitter, accusing him unethical and abusive behaviour. Banerjee has often described him as a 'BJP mouthpiece" while repeatedly seeking his removal, alleging obstruction in routine government processes. Despite an occasional attempt at a truce, their relationship was fraught with tension and confrontational to the point that it lasted even after he resigned as governor to assume the office of vice president. While presiding over the Rajya Sabha, too, he had been the target of TMC members in the House, who resolutely believed him to be politically partisan. view comments Location : New Delhi, India, India First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. From charity to capitalism with conscience, ESG gains ground in Indian healthcare and pharma

New Delhi: As India's healthcare sector races toward a projected USD 596 billion valuation by 2025, a quiet but powerful shift is underway—Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles are emerging as the next big disruptor. No longer just a corporate buzzword, ESG is now being seen as a critical framework to tackle inequities, attract impact-driven capital , and build a resilient, inclusive healthcare ecosystem. Experts say ESG could be the game-changer India needs to move beyond piecemeal CSR initiatives and government subsidies—offering instead a data-backed, accountability-driven approach to bridging access gaps, especially in rural and underserved regions. Despite its massive scale, healthcare accounts for just six per cent of the total market capitalisation of the top 1,000 NSE-listed firms—highlighting an urgent need for long-term, value-based transformation. With over 7.5 million workers across hospitals, pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, medtech, and biotech, embedding ESG may not just boost investor trust—it could define India's path to becoming a global healthcare leader by 2047. India currently ranks 120 out of 156 countries on the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Index, reflecting an urgent need to adopt frameworks that move from short-term charity to measurable, long-term impact. In a conversation with ETHealthworld, Amit Bhatia, Founder of Aspire Impact and Aspire Circle, emphasised the growing relevance of ESG in reshaping healthcare outcomes across the country. 'ESG enables us to move from charity to capitalism with conscience . It incentivises healthcare providers to address underserved populations through market-based mechanisms, improving both health outcomes and investment returns,' he said. India's healthcare landscape is marked by deep-rooted inequities, especially in rural and tier 2/3 cities, where critical gaps in infrastructure, affordability, and access remain. According to Bhatia, traditional philanthropy often lacks scale, sustainability, and accountability. ESG frameworks, by contrast, offer structured and quantifiable models backed by 150+ healthcare-specific Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). These KPIs track metrics viz patient safety and care quality, medical waste management, gender equity and workforce inclusion, affordability and last-mile access, digital health adoption and ethical governance and transparency 'Only 25 per cent of Indian companies disclose ESG metrics today. But those that do often enjoy 5 to 20 per cent higher valuation multiples, increased investor trust, and improved brand equity,' Bhatia noted. Unlike one-off donations or government subsidies that risk creating dependency, ESG-driven investments aim to align profitability with purpose. Aspire Impact uses a Dual ESG Ratings & Rankings system that evaluates companies on both risk mitigation and impact potential, helping guide capital towards organisations making a measurable difference—particularly in low-access geographies. Through its evaluation of over 1,000 companies, Aspire has helped develop sector-specific ESG roadmaps tailored to various industries. The healthcare ESG framework, launched in 2022, is designed to support providers operating in underserved regions, where demand for quality, inclusive care is rapidly growing. Bhatia also highlighted how embedding ESG principles into public health initiatives—such as the Ayushman Bharat Digital Health Mission (ABDM)—can significantly enhance transparency, accountability, and scalability. He further called for greater alignment between ESG disclosures and India's regulatory mandates, including the Companies Act and SEBI's ESG reporting requirements. This alignment, he noted, could catalyse widespread adoption of ESG frameworks across both public and private healthcare players. 'The future of healthcare is not just digital or data-driven, it must be value-driven. ESG allows us to quantify our intentions, measure our progress, and attract capital that's both responsible and results-oriented,' Bhatia said. With sustainability and accountability becoming top priorities for investors, ESG adoption in healthcare is no longer optional—it's a strategic imperative. For India to bridge persistent gaps in equity, affordability, and access, ESG provides a clear and actionable pathway to achieving universal healthcare goals while reinforcing national resilience. As India looks ahead to its centenary in 2047, embedding ESG principles into healthcare strategy could become a defining lever—reshaping not just institutions, but also the future of public health and social impact in the country.
