60 Years Ago Today: The Beatles Played the First-Ever Major Stadium Rock Concert
Six decades ago, the loudest sound in New York wasn't a jet overhead—it was 55,600 fans screaming for four guys from Liverpool.
On August 15, 1965, The Beatles walked onto a stage planted over second base at Shea Stadium and made music history. It was the first major stadium rock concert, the night Beatlemania scaled up to sports-arena size, and the blueprint for every mega-tour that came after.
Fast forward to today, the New York Mets are honoring that milestone with The Beatles Night at Citi Field as they host the Seattle Mariners. The celebration includes a pregame set by tribute band 1964 The Tribute at the Shea Bridge starting at 6:15 p.m., a Shea Stadium replica for the first 15,000 fans, and a Beatles-soundtracked fireworks show after the game. Even members of the 1965 gameday staff are returning to throw out the first pitch.

Back in '65, the idea of a rock band filling a baseball stadium was untested. Promoter Sid Bernstein booked it anyway, selling tickets for about $4.50 to $5.65. The gamble paid off. The Beatles, made up of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr, brought in roughly $304,000 (pocketing $160,000), which Bernstein proudly called 'the greatest gross ever in the history of show business.'
Introducing them that night was Ed Sullivan, the TV host who had famously introduced the band to America a year earlier, declaring, 'Honored by their country, decorated by their Queen, and loved here in America… here are The Beatles!'
The setlist was short by today's standards—just 12 songs including 'Twist and Shout,' 'Ticket to Ride,' 'A Hard Day's Night,' and 'Help!'—but it hardly mattered. In a 2015 interview with Ellen DeGeneres, Starr recalled that the band 'couldn't hear [themselves]' over the wall of screaming fans, who 'just screamed until we bowed and left.'
And the frenzy didn't stop when the music did. According to The Washington Post, the group had to be rushed off the field in a white station wagon driven by Shea groundskeeper Pete Flynn, then transferred to an armored truck to make their escape.
Celebrities were in the stands too: Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, and Marvin Gaye, plus future Beatles spouses Linda Eastman and Barbara Bach. The whole thing was filmed with 14 cameras and later aired as The Beatles at Shea Stadium, though several songs were overdubbed in post-production to fix the audio lost in the chaos.

McCartney would later call it 'magic—just walls of people,' as he recalled in The Beatles Anthology. Lennon described it as 'the top of the mountain,' a line he repeated in multiple interviews about the Shea concert. In one night, they proved stadium concerts could work, paving the way for everyone from Elton John to Taylor Swift.

John Lennon and Yoko Ono's most political musical era, when the pair moved to New York City in 1971, is the focus of a massive upcoming box set featuring over 90 unreleased recordings. Power to the People (Super Deluxe Edition) — releasing via Capitol/UMe on October 10, one day after Lennon would have been 85 — collects recordings from 1969 to 1972, from their 1969 bed-in anthem 'Give Peace a Chance' to their One to One concerts at Madison Square Garden, Lennon's only full shows after leaving the Beatles, and the last concerts Lennon ever performed. 'I was completely floored putting this collection together and getting to remix the concerts and hearing all the unreleased material from my parents' archive for the first time,' Sean Ono Lennon said in a statement. 'People may not realize how special it is for me to hear my dad talking or to see him. I grew up with a set number of images and audio clips that everyone's familiar with. So to come across things that I've never seen or heard is really deep for me, because it's almost like getting more time with my dad. When I was eleven, my mum put out the Live in New York City album and film. So I grew up listening to it. It was a concert that had a legendary status in my mind, because it was my dad's last concert.' Ahead of Power to the People's release, Capitol/UMe have shared an unreleased live version of the Beatles' 'Come Together,' recorded during the evening One to One show: The box set features both the afternoon and evening One to One shows, plus live recordings of Lennon, Ono, and the Plastic Ono Band from the era, including June 1971 jam with Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention at the Fillmore East. Lennon's own unreleased home recordings from late 1971 are also included, as well as never-before-heard tracks from Lennon and Phil Ochs' joint set in December 1971. The super deluxe edition is accompanied by a 204-page book, newsprint poster, postcards, stickers and other replica ephemera from the era. Power to the People, which follows the recent deep dive into Lennon's Mind Games, will also be available in scaled-down 4LP, 2LP and CD editions boasting highlights from the collection. Rogers, who played Robert Scorpio on the daytime soap opera from 1980 until his death, passed away just one month after he shared he had been diagnosed with lung cancer. In the announcement, which was shared via his publicist, the soap veteran expressed his gratitude for his devoted fans. 'Tristan sends his love to his fans and wants them to know how much he appreciates their loyalty and encouragement over the years. This support means more to him now than ever." the statement read. In a post shared on General Hospital's Instagram page, the leading producer of the series shared a touching tribute to Rogers shortly after news broke of his death. "The entire General Hospital family is heartbroken to hear of Tristan Rogers' passing. Tristan has captivated our fans for more than 50 years and Port Charles will not be the same without him (or Robert Scorpio)," Valentini wrote. "I would like to extend my deepest sympathies to his family and friends during this difficult time. Tristan was a one-of-a-kind talent and will be greatly missed. May he rest in peace." Rogers' passing was confirmed by his manager, Meryl Soodak, to ABC 7 Eyewitness News on Friday, August 15. Soodak told ABC that Rogers' General Hospital role "meant everything to him." "He loved being Scorpio and he created that role from nothing," Soodak said. "He was supposed to work a day and he ended up making it into something huge. He was just a genuinely loyal, kind human being and he loved his family."
