Goan bands hit the right note on Mangaluru stage

Goan bands hit the right note on Mangaluru stage

Time of Indiaa day ago

Mangaluru: There's a new rhythm setting the pace for celebrations in Mangaluru, and it hails directly from Goa. The coastal city's event circuit, from charity galas to ticketed parties and family functions, is increasingly showing a strong preference for Goan bands.
The city's stages have seen almost all the top bands of Goa performing live over the years. A few notable names include A26, Black IN White Band, True Blue, Double R, Mark Revlon, Raagas2Riches, Uzo Band and others. Organisers and attendees of these events laud their energetic performances, passion for music and singing, and diverse repertoire, which often resonate deeply with the region's shared Konkani Catholic heritage.
This trend sees many Goan groups performing regularly in Mangaluru. However, a stark contrast exists as very few Mangalurean bands secure similar gigs in Goa.
Mark Fernandes of Stonebridge Entertainment, one of the event organisers who set the trend of inviting Goan bands in 2019, attributes their success to the quality of song selection, command over playlists, and quality of voice, which is as good as the original.
"They don't just play one music genre, but all. Secondly, they also have a good command over Bollywood cover numbers, singing live, which not all bands can do.
In total, Goan bands can capture the audience of Mangaluru and perform according to their taste," said Fernandes, adding that close to 20-25 bands from Goa are eagerly waiting to perform in Mangaluru.
"They (Goan bands) perform in Mangaluru as it gives them a new platform to get recognised for their talents in the state," he said.
Mark also added that earlier, bands originating from Mangaluru did not have many bookings outside the district, but of late, a few bands are able to touch the stages of Goa too. It is a positive sign, and some also perform in clubs in Bengaluru.
Besides performing in ticketed events or charity galas, the Goan bands are also able to make inroads into private functions of individuals, be it roce, weddings, or other small events such as birthdays and anniversaries. Those who attend these events summarise that these bands are high in energy and dance-oriented. "Bands are well known for their high-energy performances and make everyone, be it young or old, shake a leg or two," says Laxmi Shenoy, an event organiser as well as a partygoer.

You had options but why murder? Kangana Ranaut questions Raja Raghuvanshi's wife Sonam, prime accused in murder case

Raja Raghuvanshi and Sonam's case In a country still reeling from the shock of Raja Raghuvanshi's brutal murder during his honeymoon in Meghalaya, public outrage has crossed into the world of Bollywood. The case, where Raja's own wife, Sonam, has been named the prime accused alongside her alleged lover and two others, has not only stunned citizens but also sparked reactions from celebrities. Among the first to voice her dismay is actress and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut, who shared her unfiltered thoughts on Instagram, calling the crime 'absurd, cruel, and dumb.'Known for her fierce and often provocative takes on current events, Kangana questioned the disturbing contradictions in the case. In her Instagram Story, she pointed out how Sonam, who allegedly couldn't gather the courage to reject the marriage, still managed to orchestrate a calculated murder. The actress expressed disbelief that Sonam neither opted for a divorce nor eloped with her lover, but instead chose a horrifying route—allegedly plotting Raja's murder with contract didn't hold back, highlighting what she sees as the greater danger of 'dumbness' in society. She warned that while intelligent people may cause harm for calculated reasons, those lacking awareness pose a far more unpredictable threat. 'We often laugh at them and think they are harmless,' she noted, 'but it's not true. Dumb people should never be taken lightly.'Raja Raghuvanshi and his wife, Sonam, both from Indore, Madhya Pradesh, went missing during their honeymoon in Meghalaya. Raja's body was later found in a gorge, and Sonam has been named the prime accused in his alleged murder. Meghalaya Police claim she hired contract killers to carry out the others, Akash Rajput, Vishal Singh Chauhan, and Raj Singh Kushwaha, have also been arrested and will be taken to Shillong for further investigation. Meghalaya Deputy CM Prestone Tynsong confirmed the arrests and stated that one suspect remains at large. Sonam surrendered voluntarily, according to authorities. SIT Chief Herbert Pyniaid Kharkongor said the post-mortem revealed Raja had sustained two head injuries.

‘Thug Life' day 5 box office collection: Kamal Haasan-Mani Ratnam film continues to struggle

Thug Life, starring Kamal Haasan and directed by Mani Ratnam, continues to struggle at the box office. After the fifth day of it's worldwide release, the pan-Indian film paled in comparison with Housefull 5, the big Bollywood release of last week. According to the portal the gangster drama took its domestic earnings to 40.52 crore with a ₹3.62 crore earning on June 09, 2025 (Monday). The Tamil version of the movie made ₹3.25 crore while the Telugu and the Hindi versions collected ₹29 and ₹8 lakh respectively. The global worldwide gross of Thug Life stands at ₹75 crore. On the contrary, Housefull 5, despite negative reviews, managed to rake up ₹13.76 crore on the same day. The fifth film in the well-known franchise stars Akshay Kumar, Sanjay Dutt, Jacqueline Fernandez, Kriti Kharbanda among others. For Kamal Haasan, who co-produced Thug Life under his banner Raaj Kamal Films International, the movie's poor show comes on the back of the disastrous performance of Indian 2, directed by S Shankar. Mani Ratnam, on the other hand, had a delivered a humungous hit with his Ponniyin Selvan films, before Thug Life. Also starting Silambarasan TR, Trisha, Ashok Selvan, Joju George and Nasser, the Thug Life has music from A R Rahman and cinematography from Ravi K Chandran. Sreekar Prasad has done the editing for the movie. ALSO READ:Kamal Haasan interview: On 'Thug Life', AI in cinema and his unrealised projects The Hindu review of the movie said, 'It doesn't help that the film fails to add more to its archaic fight-for-the-throne conflict at the centre of the film. Subplots and layers seem added purely for convenience, like a character that returns in the climax to serve a meagre purpose. Despite a master filmmaker at the helm, all the star power in its arsenal and the right ingredients to make a heady modern gangster drama, it makes you grope in the dark for its beating heart.'

Meet actor who stayed with someone else's wife for 20 years, was thrown out of his home because.., discovered shocking truth after.., his name is.. In the glitzy and glamorous world of Bollywood, the dazzling lives of the stars usually take the center stage. However, what happens behind the scenes when the curtain falls is a lot more than what meets the eye. We often see celebrities with turbulent relationships, complex dynamics, and complicated interpersonal lives. One such similar tale is of a celebrated actor from the golden era, who has delivered many cult classics and has charmed everyone with his captivating screen presence. The person we are talking about is none other than Deepak Tijori. A celebrated face from the golden age of Bollywood, he started his career in 1988 with Tera Naam Mera Naam. He did many films after that, but Aashiqui, Khiladi, Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar, and Anjaam rose him to fame. He was known for his innocence nd boyish charm and strong presence that made him a fan favourite in no time. However, besides his on-screen presence but what was more gripping was his real-life story that took everyone by storm. In front of the flashy camera world, Deepak was in a happy marriage with designer Shivani Tomar, and the duo had a daughter named Samara. However, later, the reports of his wife throwing him out of the Mumbai house started doing the rounds. She allegedly suspected him of cheating, which turned their relationship ugly. However, to fight his side, Deepak hired a counsellor to resolve the matter; however, what happened next was no less than a courtroom thriller. During the legal proceedings, Deepak found out that Shivani was never legally his wife. She had not divorced her first husband legally, and therefore, their marriage was invalid. For over 20 years, Deepak lived under the impression of being in a legitimate marriage, only to realise the foundation of his personal life was legally non-existent. In between all of this, their daughter Samara remained a bright spot. Following in her father's footsteps, she ventured into acting and made her debut in 2022 with the web series Masoom, sharing screen space with talents like Boman Irani and Upasana Singh. Deepak has also worked with superstars like Aamir Khan, Akshay Kumar, and Shah Rukh Khan, and he continues to resonate with the audience even today. Deepak's journey, from Bollywood's beloved supporting actor to the central figure, shows that there is a lot that goeson behind what we see from the outside of celebrity lives. While he has ventured into direction and appeared in Gujarati cinema, this personal twist remains the most talked-about chapter of his life.
