As part of a pilot rollout, 10 urban local bodies (ULBs) — including six city municipal councils and four town panchayats — were selected across the state. These include Bhagyanagara TP and Siruguppa CMC (Ballari), Boragav TP and Gokak CMC (Belagavi), Basavakalyan CMC (Bidar), Kolar CMC, Bagalkot CMC, Chikkamagaluru CMC, Bogadi TP (Mysuru), and Anavatti TP (Shivamogga).
Officials have scheduled surveys on Monday and are urging owners or their representatives to be available on site."Once the department issues a draft card of property ownership after a survey, owners could raise concerns or queries about ownership," said J Manjunath, commissioner of survey settlement and land records. "There is a possibility that many owners may approach the department for corrections. If the survey is done in the presence of owners, the number of errors will decrease. So, the department has requested people to be present at their property for survey work."Drones, flown 120 metres above ground, have already completed aerial surveys in eight of 10 areas. The data was used to generate orthorectified radar images (ORI maps) showing every visible structure and feature, from buildings to drainage lines.Ground truthing, or on-site verification, is now underway to match drone data with physical features. was launched. So, the department began ground truthing work for these three ULBs. In the remaining five ULBs, the drone flyover was completed," Manjunath said.The Survey of India provide ORI (origin of replication) maps. Once everything is mapped, the department plans to swiftly complete verification and issue ownership records — making early public participation critical.

No equipment, no raise: BBMP's wildlife rescuers risk lives for ₹18,000 a month
Seven years have passed since the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) last revised the honorarium for wildlife rescuers empanelled with its forest wing. Despite rescuers submitting requests every year, the civic body has no plans to increase the amount. Out of the 11 wildlife rescuers recognised by the BBMP in 2008, seven are still with the civic body, while four have since withdrawn. Initially, they received an honorarium of ₹5,000, which was revised twice, once in 2012 to ₹12,000, and again in 2018 to ₹18,000. Multiple sources told The Hindu that although there is an official proposal for increasing the honorarium, it has been stalled at the administrative level, pending necessary approvals. A senior BBMP official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that the proposal has not been considered and is not a current priority, reasoning that wildlife rescue is not regular work. In contrast, both the rescuers and several forest wing officials argue that the rescuers work round the clock, addressing human-wildlife conflict in urban areas. According to BBMP data reviewed by The Hindu, the rescuers attended to 325 complaints between April and June alone, which included rescues of 297 snakes, 23 birds, and 17 monkeys. Notably, no injuries were reported during these operations. Although this is official data, rescuers often under-report their work due to the cumbersome documentation process. 'We have to take GPS-tagged photos of the capture and release and record the date, time, and location before submitting the report to the zonal forest officer. All of this has to be done manually and involves considerable paperwork,' a rescuer told The Hindu. Moreover, such a system didn't exist in earlier years, which meant the BBMP lacks historical data on wildlife captures. Rescuers often attend an overwhelming number of calls during the monsoon season, particularly for snakes during their breeding season, leaving little time for data entry. 'It's a high-risk job, and we haven't been given any equipment. We handle five to six calls daily, regardless of the time. Most of our honorarium goes toward fuel expenses,' one rescuer said, adding that he also delivers newspapers and milk to make ends meet. Beyond rescues, these seven individuals also ensure that wildlife does not interfere with political events, which occur frequently. One rescuer noted that he has seen 28 species of snakes in Bengaluru, including four that are highly venomous: Russell's viper, saw-scaled viper, common cobra, and common krait. He emphasised that the BBMP has not provided any equipment to deal with these dangerous species. Another rescuer recalled how a colleague, Manjunath, was bitten by a snake two years ago and spent several days in the ICU, highlighting the dangers they face regularly. Joseph Hoover, a wildlife activist, voiced support for the rescuers and urged the BBMP to consider increasing the honorarium. He pointed out that private rescuers often charge between ₹2,000 and ₹5,000 a rescue, while the BBMP rescuers carry out these operations free of cost.

Kaimur tipped as state's next tiger hub amid surging big cat numbers
1 2 Patna: As the world marks Tiger Conservation Day on Tuesday (July 29), Bihar has reason to celebrate as it has witnessed a remarkable surge in its tiger population in recent years, a clear sign of improving forest ecosystems and successful conservation efforts. According to the All India Tiger Estimation Reports, published every four years, the Valmiki Tiger Reserve (VTR) in West Champaran had just eight tigers in 2010. This number rose to 28 in 2014, 31 in 2018 and an impressive 54 in 2022. The current population now exceeds VTR's optimal capacity of 45 tigers. Buoyed by this growth, the state govt has initiated steps to develop a second tiger reserve in the Kaimur Wildlife Sanctuary (KWLS). Spread across 1,504 square kilometres, KWLS is set to be developed into another 'tiger-bearing landscape' in Bihar, said Gopal Sharma, former joint director of the Zoological Survey of India. In fact, the move to establish the Kaimur Tiger Reserve began as early as 2018 when then Kaimur district forest officer Satyajeet Kumar reported tiger sightings, along with pugmarks and prey remains. Tigers had not been observed in the region since 1995. Following these reports, a team of experts conducted a site visit and evaluated the sanctuary for designation as a tiger reserve, Sharma added. Samir Kumar Sinha, chief ecologist at the Wildlife Trust of India, welcomed the growing tiger numbers in Bihar's forests and urged for focused efforts to improve the habitat and prevent tiger migration. "If VTR has surplus tigers, some can be relocated to the proposed Kaimur Tiger Reserve," he said. Sinha also pointed out that the eastern fringes of the Kaimur forests, located in the Vindhyan hills, are well connected to Panna, Bandhavgarh and Sanjay-Dubri Tiger Reserves in Madhya Pradesh. "If the big cats find favourable habitats, they may move from one forest to another," he said. Environmental activist Mehta Nagendra Singh attributed the increase in the tiger population at VTR to heightened public awareness and stricter monitoring of mining activities around the reserve. "Minimising human-wildlife conflict has played a crucial role in this growth," he said.
