Freddy Adu reveals truth behind Celtic transfer interest and why 'America's Pele' never fancied Rangers
Freddy Adu is a name synonymous with millions of Football Manager players around the world - and one that Celtic fans of a certain age might remember too.
The American made his debut in the MLS at the age of just 14 and was soon the talk of the town all over Europe, even spending time on trial at Manchester United.
But while the man once dubbed as 'America's Pele' went onto win 17 caps for his country and make a few appearances for Lisbon giants Benfica, Adu infamously never fulfilled his potential, and retired aged 31 in 2021 after nomadic career that took him to several countries including Serbia, Finland and Sweden.
Celtic were touted as a potential destination for the wonderkid back in 2007, with his agent even going as far as saying he planned to get in touch with the Parkhead club about Adu's talent during a Hoops' trip to the States for an MLS-All Stars friendly encounter that summer.
A year earlier, a 16-year-old Adu had caught Celtic's attention when he found the net in a 4-0 friendly victory for D.C United against Gordon Strachan's team and says he remembers that goal all too well.
Speaking exclusively to Record Sport via the home of slots, Adu recalled: "I remember scoring the goal, a really nice through-ball and I got on the end of it and was able to finish it. It was one of those games where I was able to show my different forms of skill and in turn create a lot of chances and get the first goal of the game! It was a fun time!
"I had one of my better games that day! I thought we played some of the best soccer we've ever played as a team against Celtic. I remember that I was pumped up to play that game, and I played one of my best games I think, as 16 or 17 year old.
"I remember I was juiced up to play that game because it's not every day you get a chance to play against one of the premier teams in Europe, which Celtic was at the time. Celtic is always a big name, and everybody knows Celtic, so I was really excited.
"And I ended up having one of my better games, that game! And I do remember we beat pretty handsomely too, 4-0! That might have been the best game that we played that season, believe it or not!"
Although his agent went public about wanting to speak to Celtic, Adu says no discussions about making the move across the pond ever took place.
"No", he added. "The weird thing is that there were some rumblings, but it wasn't big enough for me to really get into it I guess. At that point, there were a lot of stories and whatnot about this team or that team, but it never really went anywhere, so I wasn't really aware of it to that extent, I guess."
But the now 36-year-old insists he would have loved the chance to dazzle under the lights at Parkhead and reveals his preference over Celtic for bitter rivals Rangers, where former international teammates Maurice Edu and DaMarcus Beasley both spent some time during their respective careers.
He stated: "It would have probably been Celtic. Growing up between the two teams, I liked Celtic. I love (Henrik) Larsson, he was very good for them. That Celtic were really, really good in my childhood and I liked them.
"I liked them more than I liked Rangers, for sure. And the funny thing is, DaMarcus Beasley did play for Rangers, and I remember Maurice Edu played for Rangers as well, and I remember telling Beasley one time: 'Rangers is cool and all, but Celtic all day, every day!'

Scottish football in coefficient recovery mode as playoff schedules packed with top ten threats and opportunities
There's work to do but a chance to climb back towards the top ten with Celtic, Rangers, Aberdeen and Hibs all in the mix There's work to do, but Scottish football is at least in coefficient recovery mode after recent European results. Dropping out of the top ten saw us lose an automatic Champions League league phase spot this year, meaning champions Celtic face a gruelling trip to Kazakhstan to face Kairat Almaty to bank a £40million jackpot and another crack at reaching the knockout stage this year. Despite their domestic woes, Rangers could join them after battling through to the playoff round thanks to aggregate wins over Panathinaikos and Viktoria Plzen respectively. Club Brugge stand between Russell Martin and the European elite and if the pre-season friendly between the two was anything to go by, then it's set to be a major test over 180 minutes. Hibs made their fans sweat but they eventually saw off FK Partizan on a dramatic night at Easter Road to set up a Conference League final hurdle clash with Legia Warsaw. Aberdeen enter the Europa League at the same stage and face FCSB, knowing they have the Conference League safety net should they fall short over two legs. Dundee Utd gave it a hell of a go but were edged out by Rapid Vienna on penalties. Looking at the bigger picture, we could do with racking up the wins to get closer to the top ten. The Czechs are the team to catch on 38.900 and Rangers looked like they'd made a dent with that 3-0 first leg win over Plzen, although we could have done without the 2-1 second leg defeat cancelling out the point made up on the Czechs initially. Standing between us and them are Switzerland, Austria, Poland, Norway and Greece. Rangers dumping Panathinaikos was a big boost, while next opponents Brugge beating RB Salzburg home and away helped too. Utd's two draws evened things out over their two legs, while Hibs can strike a blow with a couple of wins over Legia. Looking at the other Champions League playoff fixtures, a Copenhagen win over Basel would be ideal, while Norway or Austria will lose a CL rep when Bodo/Glimt play Sturm Graz. The Europa League playoff sees more of our coefficient rivals in the mix. Lech Poznan take on Genk while Panathinaikos are paired with Samsunspor. Malmo hosts Sigma Olomuc and PAOK have two legs against Croat champions Rijeka to overcome. AEK Larnaca can do us a favour against Brann while Young Boys take on Slovan Bratislava, who were denied a showdown with Celtic. The Conference League playoff is packed with clubs we could do with being dumped out. Crystal Palace should take care of Fredrikstad while Rosenborg have a tough tie against Mainz. Servette beating Shakhtar Donetsk would be a shock, as would Lausanne beating Besiktas. AEK Athens have a tough one against Anderlecht while Brondby play Strasbourg. Rapid Vienna, Jagiellonia Bialystock, Sparta Prague and Rakow Czestochowa are all favourites in their respective ties however. Our clubs can only control their own results, although two flying the flag in the Champions League would be a big help to getting us back to where we belong. Champions League playoff draw Crvena Zvezda vs Pafos Rangers vs Club Brugge Ferencvaros vs Qarabag Celtic vs Kairat Basel vs Copenhagen Bodo/Glimt vs Sturm Graz Fenerbahce vs Benfica Europa League playoff draw Lech Poznan vs Genk Panathinaikos vs Samsunspor Shkendija vs Ludogrets Maccabi Tel-Aviv vs Dynamo Kyiv Malmo vs Sigma Zrinjski vs Utrecht Rijeka vs PAOK Lincoln Red Imps vs Braga Midtjylland vs KuPS Aberdeen vs FCSB Brann vs AEK Larnaca Slovan Bratislava vs Young Boys Conference League playoff draw Breidablik vs Virtus Rosenborg bs Mainz Jagiellonia Bialystock vs Dinamo Tirana Celje vs Banik Crystal Palace vs Fredrikstad Santa Clara vs Shamrock Rovers Basaksehir vs Universitatea Craiova Gyor vs Rapid Vienna Sparta Prague vs Riga Levski Sofia vs Alkmaar Neman vs Rayo Vallecano Hamrun vs RFS Shakhtar Donetsk vs Servette Lausanne vs Besiktas Olimpija vs Noah Anderlecht vs AEK Athens Wolfsberg vs Omonia Hibs vs Legia Warsaw Polissya Zhytomyr vs Fiorentina Drita vs Differdange Strasbourg vs Brondby Shelbourne vs Linfield Rakow Czestochowa vs Arda Hacken vs Cluj

Young Celtic fan parties with BSC Young Boys in Switzerland after sweet viral clip in Glasgow
Footage captured the moment Joshua McLaughlin interacted with BSC Young Boys fans at Celtic Park earlier this year, a special relationship which has continued. A young Celtic fan has partied with BSC Young Boys in Switzerland after footage captured him meeting their fans in Glasgow earlier this year. The viral clip showed eight-year-old Joshua McLaughlin and his dad walking over to applaud the away fans after being blown away by the atmosphere they created at the crunch Champions League game fixture in January. The supporters took Joshua to their hearts and he has now visited Switzerland twice in recent months. Following the game at Celtic Park, Joshua's dad, Kevin, wanted to buy his son a BSC Young Boys jersey but when he contacted the club the pair were invited over for a match. They enjoyed an all expenses paid trip to Switzerland in April, where the Elderslie youngster was asked to be the club mascot for the day as the Swiss outfit played Yverdon Sport FC. Joshua begged his dad to go over again during the school holidays and they were given an unbelievable reception from the locals last weekend. Speaking to the Record, Kevin, 53, explained how his son struck up a close friendship with local lads Jonas Boss and Giuliano Matturro in April and was desperate to go back over for a game this summer. Kevin arranged a trip to take in BSC Young Boy's match against FC Sion on Sunday, August 10. At the match, goalkeeper Marvin Keller and defender Jaouen Hadjam even noticed Joshua and came over and spent some time with him. Kevin said: "I tried to keep it as low key as possible, but the day before the game I posted a picture on Instagram and the club shared it and hundreds of Swiss people started following me. "So many people inside the stadium seemed to recognise us and the attention was so overwhelming. "We went out for dinner that night and the guy who owned the restaurant refused to let us pay for our meal. "It was the same when we visited the country earlier this year, the Swiss fans have just been absolutely amazing throughout and Joshua is stopped all the time and asked for selfies. "It has all been such a whirlwind of emotions and came off the back of the one incident inside Celtic Park." Kevin explained he had never seen such a noisy and colourful away support in all his years following Celtic during the January game. He said from the moment they stepped inside the stadium that night Joshua was completely fascinated. "By that point all of the home fans were away so we must have stood out as we walked over to be near them. "The fans started doing that thing you see in the video where they sort of hum and put out their hands. "Joshua walked over and they let off two huge roars and applauded him. "It was such a special moment for us both and I was bursting with pride." Kevin uploaded his video on social media before going to bed that night and woke up to find it had gone viral. The dad was inundated with messages from supporters of the Swiss club. He said their lives haven't been the same since and the club are going to be a fixture in their lives going forward. Kevin added: "I don't know where it will go from here but it has been a wonderful journey so far. "BSC Young Boys are definitely our second club now and Joshua has absolutely fallen in love with them." Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community!
