Violence erupts at Bangladesh youth rally, media report four killed
DHAKA (Reuters) -Violence erupted on Wednesday at a rally of Bangladesh's youth-led National Citizen Party in the southern town of Gopalganj, with four people killed and more injured according to local media.
Deadly student-led protests forced long-time Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to flee to India in August last year, and since then there have been delays over promised reforms, growing protests and political division.
Nobel peace laureate Muhammad Yunus, who took over as interim head, said in a post on X that members of the NCP, police and media were attacked during a peaceful rally on Wednesday, with cars vandalised and individuals assaulted.
"Preventing young citizens from peacefully holding a rally to commemorate the one-year anniversary of their revolutionary movement is a shameful violation of their fundamental rights," he said, blaming Hasina's political party the Awami League and its student group for Wednesday's violence.
BBC News Bangla reported that four people were killed while the local daily Prothom Alo said nine were injured.
Police and hospital officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters.
Authorities imposed a curfew.
The Awami League said on Facebook that one of its members had been killed by army gunfire.

Epstein, a wealthy financier and convicted sex offender, was facing federal charges of sex-trafficking minors when he died by suicide in jail in 2019. He had pleaded not guilty, and the case was dismissed after his death. The case has captivated swaths of Trump's political base who were expecting lurid details after some of Trump's top law enforcement officials said they would be releasing documents that would lead to major revelations about Epstein and his alleged clientele. The Trump administration last week reversed course on its pledge, enraging some of the president's followers. Close to two-thirds of Republicans think the administration is hiding details on Epstein's business, the Reuters/Ipsos poll found. Just 17% of Americans approve of Trump's handling of the case, a weaker rating than the president received on any other issue in the poll. Among Republicans, 35% approved, compared to 29% who disapproved and the rest who said they weren't sure or didn't answer the question. Reuters reported on Wednesday that Trump and White House officials were weighing a range of options including unsealing new documents, appointing a special prosecutor and drafting executive actions on issues such as pedophilia. Trump, however, has been defiant, describing supporters hung up on the issue as "weaklings" who were helping Democrats. "I don't want their support anymore!" Trump said in a social media post. The beliefs following Epstein's death were part of a range of conspiracies that have taken hold in U.S. politics, including "QAnon," a far-right fringe belief that a cabal of cannibalistic child molesters inside the U.S. government have conspired against Trump. Behind the scenesTrump and senior aides have also reached out to key MAGA-aligned influencers, urging them to dial down their criticism of the administration's handling of the Epstein investigation and shift focus to broader priorities for the America First movement. The backlash over the Epstein case has laid bare tensions inside Trump's coalition and is testing one of Trump's most enduring political strengths: His ability to command loyalty and control the narrative across the right. The outcry comes amid discontent among parts of Trump's base over the U.S. strikes on Iran, continued involvement in Ukraine and any hint of backsliding on the administration's hardline immigration promises. Trump knew Epstein socially in the 1990s and early 2000s. During the 2021 trial of Epstein's associate Ghislaine Maxwell, the financier's longtime pilot, Lawrence Visoski, testified that Trump flew on Epstein's private plane multiple times. Cycling-Italian rider Privitera, 19, dies after crash in Giro della Valle d'Aosta
(Reuters) -Italian cyclist Samuele Privitera, 19, died following a crash during the opening stage of the Giro della Valle d'Aosta, his team Hagens Berman Jayco confirmed late on Wednesday. Privitera crashed during a descent, losing his helmet and colliding with a gate, Italian media reported. He was transported to hospital but succumbed to his injuries. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash. "Samuele was and always will be the life and personality of this team. This team has always been a small family, and moments like this are unimaginable," Axel Merckx, owner of Hagens Berman Jayco, said in a statement. EU stalls probe into Musk's X amid US trade talks, FT reports

The Commission will miss the deadline for finalising its investigation into X, which was expected to be done before its summer recess, the report said, citing three officials familiar with the matter. A decision was likely to come after clarity emerged in the EU-U.S. trade talks, the report said. EU tech regulators said last year that X breached EU online content rules under the Digital Services Act. Any firm found in breach of the act faces a fine worth up to 6% of its global turnover, and repeat offenders may be banned from operating in Europe altogether. An EU spokesperson said that the proceedings against X are ongoing. "The enforcement of our legislation is independent of the current ongoing negotiations," the spokesperson said in an emailed statement to Reuters.
