'We believe in Villa Park' - can Emery's men rescue tie?

BBC News09-04-2025

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery says his team "believe in Villa Park" and the potential for home comforts to energise them, but can the Premier League side really stage a comeback to reach the Champions League semi-finals?Paris St-Germain hold a two-goal lead at the halfway stage of their quarter-final tie against Villa after a convincing 3-1 win in France. The French champions will be heavy favourites to progress to the last four when the two meet again in Birmingham next Tuesday night (20:00 BST).But Villa are unbeaten in front of their own fans this season in the Champions League - even recording a home league phase win over six-time winners Bayern Munich. In fact, the Premier League side have 11 wins and six draws from their past 17 home games in all competitions, a run which stretches back to last autumn."We will play at home next week and it will be a huge challenge for us, but we will feel strong at home with our supporters at Villa Park," said Emery."We believe in our supporters, we believe in Villa Park and that the players can get the best performance next week."Emery's players remain equally optimistic."The manager spoke in there and he said 'it is only half-time'," defender Matty Cash told BBC Radio 5 Live."At home we are really strong. We are more than capable to score two or three goals at home."Villa's goalscorer Morgan Rogers - who gave them the lead at the Parc des Princes - told TNT Sports: "There's loads of belief in the changing room."We have nothing to lose, nobody thought we'd win the tie in the first place. Why not just go for it?"
'Massively' in PSG's favour but job not done yet
So, what chance do Villa have of hauling themselves back into this tie and even winning it?It should be noted that similar comebacks have been achieved before.Nine teams have been exactly two goals down after an away leg in a knockout Champions League tie and managed to successfully turn things around at home. The most recent to do that were Juventus, who lost 2-0 at Atletico Madrid in the 2018-19 last-16 stage but won their second leg 3-0.Paris St-Germain have twice surrendered two-goal leads at the halfway stage of a Champions League knockout tie - the most of any club. It occurred for them against Chelsea in 2013-14 and against Manchester United in 2018-19.Famously, PSG once surrendered a four-goal first-leg advantage against Barcelona, winning 4-0 at home but losing 6-1 at the Nou Camp. That happened in 2016-17 when the French side were managed by Emery, and when PSG's current boss Luis Enrique was in charge of Barcelona.Could the comeback roles be reversed this time? The prospects look slim.Paris St-Germain have been formidable on the road this season, winning 15 of their past 17 away games in all competitions.Defenders Marquinhos and Presnel Kimpembe are the only two players from the PSG squad who were stunned by Barcelona eight years ago who are still at the club.Former England defender Stephen Warnock believes PSG's tie with Villa is "massively" in the French side's favour."In the first leg PSG were hoping to draw them out of defence and almost give them false hope by leaving spaces for them to attack into," Warnock told BBC Sport."Villa are going to have the same problem in the second leg too, especially with the score at 3-1."Now they will have to go at them, which opens up the game for PSG on the break. If Villa were 2-1 down they could stick with the way they played in the first half on Tuesday, knowing they can nick a goal and level the tie."Sensibly, those in the PSG camp have stressed the quarter-final is far from finished.Head coach Luis Enrique told TNT Sports it will be "difficult" for his team at Villa Park, and goalscorer Khvicha Kvaratskhelia told BBC Radio 5 Live: "The job is not finished."

Brighton star risks wrath of fans by admitting his dream to sign for Liverpool

Liverpool have been very busy when it comes to the transfer market this summer and it appears another Premier League stars fancies a switch to Anfield in the near future Brighton star Igor Julio has revealed he fancies a move to Liverpool after urging a teammate to sign for the Reds. The Brazilian defender only signed for the Seagulls in 2023 from Italian side Fiorentina. Since then, he has gone on to make 49 appearances over two seasons. Despite his limited opportunities, the 27-year-old has claimed it would be his dream to become a Liverpool player in the near future, while also urging Brighton 's star striker Joao Pedro to pursue a similar switch to Anfield. ‌ 'Joao Pedro had already told Brighton some time ago that his desire was to leave, seek new things, take the next step,' Igor told Trivela. 'It seems it will be difficult and complicated for him to stay here. ‌ 'We have to be honest, the club already knows that. (I'm) very happy for him. He deserves it. He's been here in England for five years and hasn't played for a big team yet. It's his moment, his time, so he can make the best decision and be happy wherever he is. 'He always told me that he really wants to live in London, so I think he will prioritise what comes from there first. 'I told [Pedro] that he has to think about what he wants from his career. In my opinion, if I were going to a 'Big Six' team, I would go to a team that fights for the Premier League, plays in the Champions League and is always in a position to win. 'I would go to a Liverpool team and I think he would fit in perfectly at Liverpool. It's because I've always dreamed of playing for Liverpool and I would go there.' Igor, 27, still has two years left to run on his contract with Brighton following his £14m move from Fiorentina. The defender has been backed to have plenty of interest in his services heading into the second part of the summer transfer window. ‌ But it appears unlikely that Liverpool will be among the clubs tracking him. Arne Slot 's side are well stocked at centre-back, with Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Joe Gomez and Jarrel Quansah all capable of playing in the position. That situation could change should either of the latter two decide to move on over the coming months having been linked with moves away. But even then, Liverpool appear likely to have their own targets. Former Bournemouth star Dean Huijsen was linked with a move ahead of his £50m switch to Real Madrid. Goncalo Inacio has also been mentioned but as it stands, Liverpool are focusing their efforts on getting deals for Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez over the line. Liverpool target £45m Newcastle United star after agreeing Florian Wirtz deal

Liverpool are considering a move for Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon, according to reports. The Premier League champions are finally set to complete their deal to sign Florian Wirtz after agreeing a £116 million deal with Bayer Leverkusen this week. However, The Sun reports that Liverpool are planning for further signings and are weighing up whether to revive a move for Gordon. Arne Slot's side attempted to sign the England international from Newcastle last summer but were unable to reach an agreement. Gordon, who joined Newcastle in a £45m deal from Everton in January 2023, scored six goals and registered five assists in the Premier League this season. The 24-year-old could be viewed as a possible replacement for Luis Diaz, who is Barcelona's top target to strengthen their attack. When asked about his links with a move to Liverpool last summer, Gordon made it clear that he was happy at Newcastle. More Trending 'There's been a lot of talk this year about my future, where I'm going, where I want to go, without anyone actually asking me,' Gordon said in December. 'Just leave me to play football. I just want to be happy, play football and I love it here. I've said it plenty of times. 'I think with the speculation, people assume that it's correct, but you've never heard from me once that I'm unhappy at his place. I love everyone here, I love playing football here, and that was all that was. 'It took me away from enjoying my football this year and I think that is where the inconsistency has come from because I've got caught in that a little bit. But I just want to play football, especially for Newcastle.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Follow Metro Sport for the latest news on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. PSG inspired by Los Angeles as it sets out to build new stadium

LOS ANGELES, June 14 (Reuters) - Paris St Germain is drawing inspiration from the success of new state-of-the-art venues in Los Angeles as the Champions League title winners begin the process of building a new stadium for the team, CEO Victoriano Melero said. PSG has outgrown the 48,000-capacity Parc des Princes, and team officials will spend a year studying potential sites in Massy and Poissy with an eye toward offering a variety of entertainment options, Melero said. "The next challenge is a new stadium," Melero told Reuters in Los Angeles ahead of PSG's Club World Cup match on Sunday in Pasadena. "For one year we're going to go into an analysis and make a choice for our future, and we're inspired by what is going on in the U.S. with sports facilities," he said. "One example here is SoFi Stadium. It's incredible and much more than a sports facility - it really is part of entertainment and shows. So that is what we really want to push to diversify our revenue." SoFi Stadium, a technological marvel that opened in 2020, is home to the NFL's Rams and Chargers and has hosted concerts by artists like Taylor Swift and Beyonce. It will play a key role in next summer's World Cup and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The $5 billion stadium is located in Hollywood Park, a growing commercial and residential area. The 70,000-capacity indoor-outdoor stadium sits next to Intuit Dome, the high-tech NBA arena that opened last year. PSG is looking at Massy, south of Paris, and Poissy, west of the French capital, as potential sites for a new stadium. The team will play Parc des Princes for the foreseeable future while the new stadium is built. U.S. fans and investors have played a vital role in the stunning success of the club both on and off the field, said Adrien Frier, the French consul-general in Los Angeles. "Paris St Germain is what you would call in the tech sector a unicorn, and it's a unicorn that has some American blood in it," he said at a reception honoring the team in Beverly Hills, where the Champions League trophy was on display. PSG has an estimated five million fans in the U.S. and has benefited from its high-profile partnership with Nike's iconic Air Jordan brand. U.S.-based Arctos Partners holds 12.5% of the shares of the team, with majority owner Qatar Sports Investments owning the remaining 87.5% for a club that is valued at $4.4 billion. Melero said the team's ambitions are only growing. "We wrote the story of the club with that cup," he said, gesturing toward the gleaming trophy. "And right now the next move is to write the story of football with this very young team."
