Girelli says Italy's 'time has come' ahead of England Euros showdown

WEGGIS: Cristiana Girelli is having the best tournament of her life at the age of 35, with the Italy striker now preparing to lead the line for the Azzurre in their semi-final with England at Women's Euro 2025.
Her two goals, including a last-gasp winner, sent Italy past Norway and through to the last four of a Euros for the first time since 1997, with the Lionesses up next in Geneva on Tuesday.
And the veteran of 122 caps, whose three goals at the Euros have taken her international tally to 61, says Italy's performances in Switzerland show they are capable of competing with the best.
Girelli told AFP on Saturday this would be her last Euros, but added she was undecided whether to hang around for the 2027 World Cup in Brazil.
Nonetheless, the veteran shared she is relishing in Italy's run to the semis.
"Obviously they (the goals) were important because they won us the match, but I don't really like talking about my own performances, I really believe that we all put in a really good display," said Girelli, speaking to AFP at Italy's training camp near Lucerne.
"Before the match we all said that the time had come to not just win but also to show what we've been capable of doing in the last two-and-a-half years, which we didn't really do in our early matches at the Euros.
"I'm really pleased that beyond the result there was a proper performance against a team which, let's not forget, is really good."
Italy qualified from tough Group B behind world champions Spain after coming into the tournament as potential dark horses, and Girelli is convinced that she and her teammates can give England a bloody nose.
"They're the reigning champions and we have a great respect for them because they've got players who can change the game when they want to," Girelli said.
"But we've got this far and we want to keep believing, we don't want to stop here, we don't want to settle for what we already have... we have to believe."
Italy rose to prominence after years in the doldrums at the 2019 World Cup when, led by now-retired icon Sara Gama, the Azzurre reached the quarter-finals.
But things turned sour afterwards and group stage exits at the last Euros and World Cup led to Andrea Soncin replacing Milena Bartolini as coach – a decision taken in August 2023 which has led to a marked improvement.
"We have a lot of faith that we can get a result against any team," said Girelli.
"He (Soncin) always tells us to play with courage and to play football because we have the quality to do so, and both the results and performances at the moment show that."
Development of women's football in Italy has lagged behind traditional rivals in the men's game England, Spain, Germany and France, but Girelli is hoping their results this summer can lead to renewed interest.
Women's Serie A turned professional in 2022 and no Italian team has ever gone any further than the quarter-finals in the modern Champions League.
During the 2023/24 season, clubs in Italy's 10-team top division averaged over a million euros ($1.2 million) turnover, a 48 percent increase on the previous campaign, while interest has increased from television viewers with the championship broadcast on streaming service DAZN.
"We're a bit behind because since the 2019 World Cup the results haven't come and as a result what we created after the World Cup wasn't built on," said Girelli.
"I hope now that with these results we can really do more because what we're seeing in Switzerland is, maybe not unexpected, but something that makes me very proud.
"To see full stadiums, passionate fans and this brilliant atmosphere that we can all feel makes me realise that if you can do something you can also repeat it. So I hope that is just the beginning of something good and that it can also happen in Italy." - AFP

Cricket - Root climbs to second on all-time Test list as England dominate hapless India

MANCHESTER (AFP): Joe Root climbed to second on the all-time list of Test run-scorers after hitting a sparkling 38th century on Friday as England hunted a series-clinching win against India. Ben Stokes' team, 2-1 up in the five-match series, were 544-7 at stumps on the third day of the fourth Test at Old Trafford, 186 runs ahead of the toiling tourists on first innings. Root made an imperious score of exactly 150, with only retired India great Sachin Tendulkar (15,921 Test runs) now having made more than the 34-year-old Englishman's tally of 13,409. Earlier, Ollie Pope (71) put on 144 for the third wicket with Root before he was dismissed by Washington Sundar, who also removed Harry Brook cheaply to give India renewed hope. But skipper Stokes, who ended the day 77 not out after briefly retiring hurt with cramp, ensured England regained the initiative. And it was Stokes who celebrated at the other end as Root, his predecessor as England captain, reached 13,379 runs with a single to move one ahead of Australian Ricky Ponting's figure. "Magnificent from Root, this is a great moment in history," former Australia captain Ponting said on Sky Sports as the Manchester crowd stood to applaud and chant the Yorkshireman's name. "The way his career his gone, there is absolutely no reason why he will not go past Tendulkar." Root's 38th Test century also drew him level with Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara in fourth place on the list of most hundreds in a Test career. "It has been a privilege to watch him knock off those milestones," former England skipper Michael Atherton said on Sky. "It has also been a privilege to see his career unfold." - Root's 'awesome hunger' - Root did not attend the post-play press conference as he was receiving treatment for cramp. Instead England vice-captain Pope, asked what he admired most about his fellow top-order batsman, replied: "Just his hunger and his drive, you look at all the batters here and everyone's picked up something from Joe." The 27-year-old added: "His hunger for it is awesome. He's an annoyingly good bloke, the way he is with the fans and as a role model for the next generation is awesome. "There's a lot to learn from him." India's attack had few answers to Root's latest century, with bowling coach Morne Morkel -- the former South Africa quick -- saying: "There's not a lot of weaknesses in his game. That's why he's scored 13,000 plus runs." England earlier resumed on 225-2 following a blistering opening partnership of 166 in 32 overs between Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett on day two, with Pope 20 not out and Root on 11. On 21, the former England skipper walked a long away across his stumps only to miss an intended glance off Mohammed Siraj. India reviewed for lbw after Ahsan Raza ruled in Root's favour but replays upheld the Pakistani umpire's decision, indicating the ball would have missed leg stump. There was another scare when Root, on 22, was nearly run out but Ravindra Jadeja's shy at the stumps missed. Root, who started the day fifth in Test cricket's list of leading run-scorers, then leapfrogged India's Rahul Dravid and South Africa's Jacques Kallis into third place. Spin, however, eventually paid dividends for India where pace had failed, with both Jasprit Bumrah and Siraj appearing to tire in the absence of the injured Nitish Kumar Reddy. Pope had added just one run to his lunchtime score of 70 when, beaten by the drift from off-spinner Sundar, he edged a flicked front-foot drive to KL Rahul at slip. England were soon 349-4 when Brook, on three, was stumped off Sundar by Dhruv Jurel, deputising for injured India wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant. Stokes, however, prevented further collapse with his first fifty of the series and the left-handed batsman was in fine touch until succumbing to cramp in his left leg. Root reached his century in 178 balls with a glanced four off ineffective debutant paceman Anshul Kamboj. He serenely continued to 150 before he was beaten by a turning delivery from left-arm spinner Jadeja that bounced steeply, with Jurel completing a sharp stumping. And when Chris Woakes was bowled by a Siraj ball that kept low -- a worrying sign for India's batsmen -- England were still well-placed at 528-7. That was the cue for all-rounder Stokes, arguably England's best bowler this series, to resume his innings and he carried on from where he left off with a well-timed cover-drive off Bumrah. - AFP

Brazil court says Flamengo's Henrique to face trial for alleged match-fixing

FLAMENGO player Bruno Henrique will stand trial in Brazil for sports fraud aimed at allegedly benefiting his relatives through online betting, according to a court ruling seen by AFP on Friday. Henrique, 34, was charged in June for allegedly deliberately earning a yellow card during a domestic league match in 2023, in coordination with gamblers within his family circle. 'The information indicates the existence of criminal conduct by the accused Bruno Henrique,' said a judge from a Brasilia court in the decision authorizing the player's trial. The forward is accused of match-fixing, a crime punishable by two to six years in prison. The case centers on a game Flamengo lost 2-1 to Santos in Brasilia in November 2023. Henrique received a yellow card for a foul and then a second for insulting the referee, for which he was sent off. Police found several compromising messages on the phone of his brother, Wander Nunes, who will also stand trial. According to the judge, the police investigation concluded that Henrique 'intentionally acted to be penalized with the card,' while his brother encouraged him 'with the aim of obtaining financial gain.' In November 2024, police carried out several search warrants, including at Henrique's home in Rio de Janeiro and his room at Flamengo's training facility. His brother, sister-in-law, and cousin allegedly created accounts with online betting platforms the day before the match and wagered on him receiving a yellow card. Despite the legal troubles, Henrique continued to play for Flamengo, appearing in the Club World Cup in the United States in June. More recently, he captained the team in Wednesday's win over Red Bull Bragantino in the Brazilian league. Henrique and his brother must appear before the judge within 10 days, according to the ruling. Match-fixing allegations have rocked Brazilian football, with investigations implicating major clubs in South America's most powerful league.

Amorim prepared to reintegrate exiled Man Utd players if valuations not met

MANCHESTER UNITED manager Ruben Amorim has said he is prepared to reintegrate the club's exiled players into his squad if they cannot be sold for fees that match the valuations expected by the former Premier League champions. Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia have been excluded from the squad that has travelled to the United States for the club's pre-season tour with the quartet seeking transfers away from Old Trafford. But while they have had to work separately from the first team squad since United returned for training ahead of the new season, Amorim acknowledged he would be prepared to accept the players back into his squad should they not be sold. 'Some players have to find a new place to have more space in the team and other players clearly show they want a new challenge and want new teams,' Amorim told reporters in Chicago ahead of Saturday's pre-season meeting with West Ham United. 'We are just allowing these players to have time to think and to decide. If we reach a point where they have to join the team, they will join the team because they are our players. 'I'm ready to receive the players. They have more competition, more competition if you want to play in the World Cup next year, you need to play. 'So I'm really happy with that because I have more options. If they have to fight each other to play, for me it's perfect.' United have signed Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo so far in the transfer window, while England winger Marcus Rashford has left to join Barcelona on loan as Amorim's side looks to bounce back from a lowly 15th place finish in last year's league table. The club's financial situation is such that United need to sell players if they want to add to their squad. Chief Executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox are charged with finding buyers for their 'bomb squad'. 'I know for a fact these people - Jason, Omar and the club - have a number for these players,' said Amorim. 'If they don't reach that, they will be Manchester United players, no doubt about that. 'I understand the (interested) clubs are waiting for the last minute but they can have a surprise.' - REUTERS
