PSG sizzle in California sun with big World Cup win, Bayern rout Auckland
Paris St Germain picked up right where they left off in their first match since winning the Champions League last month, turning what was billed as a blockbuster into a 4-0 rout of Atletico Madrid in their 2025 Fifa Club World Cup opener.
The midday match, timed to accommodate viewers in Europe, drew 80,619 people to the sun-soaked Rose Bowl in Pasadena — site of the 1994 World Cup final where Brazil beat Italy on penalties — on a day when the toasty conditions led to water breaks in both halves.
'It's the best scheduled time for the European countries, but it's difficult to play in these conditions,' PSG coach Luis Enrique said after the Group B clash.
Enrique was encouraged to see the huge turnout, which set an attendance record for PSG and Atletico Madrid this season, according to Fifa.
'It's really great to feel that love in another part of the world,' Enrique said. 'We are happy and we want to continue in that way.'

No team has been able to derail PSG lately. They have outscored their opponents 12-0 in their last three matches including their 5-0 romp over Inter Milan in the Champions League final.
Beating fellow European powerhouse Atletico Madrid in such convincing fashion on Sunday solidifies PSG's status as one of the favourites to triumph in the 32-team Club World Cup.
Despite being without injured Ballon d'Or favourite Ousmane Dembele, the young team earned the win behind a balanced attack and saw goals from four different players — Fabian Ruiz, Vitinha, Senny Mayulu and Lee Kang-in.
'Every single player has been developing and showing to the team their best quality,' Enrique said. 'As a coach I'm very happy.'
Man-of-the-match Vitinha said it is always a group effort.

'As always I am going to talk about the team,' he said. 'It was a very good game and it's difficult with this temperature, but we did well against a very good team.
:Everybody knows Atletico is a tough team, an aggressive team, but we did very well. We managed to control all of the game.
'We could have scored more, but we are happy with the result.'
PSG will be back at the Rose Bowl on Thursday evening to face Botafogo.
Michael Olise scored two goals with two assists, all in the first half as Bayern Munich got routed New Zealand's Auckland City 10-0 in their Group C opener in Cincinnati.
Kinglesly Coman also scored a pair of first-half goals for Bayern, including the opening goal of the tournament in the sixth minute, after Saturday's game between Egypt's Al Ahly and Inter Miami FC ended in a 0-0 draw.
Olise scored goals in the 20th minute and the third minute of first-half stoppage time. His early assists were for Coman's second goal, for a 4-0 lead in the 22nd minute and his was for veteran Thomas Muller for a 5-0 lead in the 45th.

Bayern further distanced themselves in the second half, with midfielder Jamal Musiala scoring three goals in a 16-minute stretch. Muller capped the scoring with a goal in the 89th and also had an assist on Musiala's first goal in the 68th.
Bayern Munich face Argentina's Boca Juniors their next Group C cash play in Miami on Friday. Auckland City meet Benfica in Orlando.
Brazilian and South American champions Botafogo survived a late onslaught to beat MLS side Seattle Sounders 2-1 in their Group B opener at Lumen Field in Seattle, Washington.
First-half headers from Jair Cunha and Igor Jesus gave the visitors a deserved lead but a second-half deflected effort from Cristian Roldan handed the hosts a lifeline.
Despite coming under late pressure, Botafogo held firm to secure the three points, with goalkeeper John making a brilliant save deep in added time to deny Seattle an equaliser.
Botafogo are second in Group B on goal difference to PSG.

The Brazilian Cup champions next face Chelsea, who beat Major League Soccer side Los Angeles FC 2-0 earlier in the day, in a mouth-watering clash at Philadelphia's Lincoln Financial Field on Friday that should determine the group winner. It has been over a decade since a European team lost at the Club World Cup but the ease with which Flamengo dispensed with Esperance will give them confidence they can end that run when they face Chelsea. The London side were the last European team to taste defeat at the tournament, losing to Corinthians in the 2012 final, but since then the continent's clubs are undefeated in 27 matches. Flamengo midfielder Jorginho was the latest to savour the good crowds at the CWC. 'We enjoyed the goal, and the fans were amazing as I've seen before but now I'm living it. The most important thing is the performance we did. I think we controlled the game, we played well and we deserved the win.' In Monday's matches, Pedro Neto and Enzo Fernandez each scored to propel Chelsea to a 2-0 victory over LA FC. Chelsea struck first in the 34th minute, as Neto received a perfect downfield pass from Nicolas Jackson before sending defender Ryan Hollingshead to the ground with a fake and finding the back of the net with a strike past goalkeeper Hugo Lloris. De Arrascaeta continued the form that has made him one of the best playmakers in Brazil's domestic league where he has 13 goal contributions in nine matches. He has been nothing if not precise in his marksmanship with nine goals on 10 shots on target. Therefore, he was the right person in the right spot for the layoff from Araujo and the Uruguayan first touched the service from 15 yards for the 1-0 lead. After Lionel Messi lit up the CWC opener, Miami's Hard Rock Stadium was awash in Argentine passion again as Boca Juniors fans turned it into a little Buenos Aires for their team's 2-2 draw with Benfica on Monday. A day after draping the shores of Miami Beach in blue and gold on the eve of their team's debut, the Boca fans chanted their way into the arena and through the game, which put them in second place in Group C behind Bayern Munich after the German champions demolished Auckland City 10-0 on Sunday. Both teams finished with 10 men after Benfica's Andrea Bellotti and Boca's Nicolas Figal picked up straight red cards in a heated contest that saw the Portuguese team cancel out a two-goal deficit. Empty seats as Chelsea win opener at Club World Cup

Picture: Paul ELLIS / AFP Chelsea began their Club World Cup campaign with a 2-0 victory against Los Angeles FC in a largely empty stadium on Monday as Brazilian giants Flamengo also got off to a winning start and a Benfica comeback denied Boca Juniors in a stormy encounter. Chelsea solid but not spectacular As the inaugural 32-team tournament gradually kicks into gear in the United States, Chelsea followed fellow European heavyweights Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich by claiming three points in their first group outing. ALSO READ: Chiefs and Pirates set for European camps Yet while UEFA Champions League winners PSG were ominous against Atletico Madrid on Sunday, and Bayern put 10 past Auckland City, the Premier League team were more solid than spectacular against LAFC in Atlanta. Pedro Neto and Enzo Fernandez got the goals for Enzo Maresca's side in the Group D match before nearly 50,000 empty seats at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium — not a great look for the tournament organisers. New signing Liam Delap made his debut as a substitute and helped set up Fernandez's strike, with Chelsea hoping to reestablish themselves among the elite after their recent UEFA Conference League triumph and Champions League qualification. Stormy In contrast, there was close to a full house, and a raucous atmosphere, in Miami as Boca and Benfica played out an entertaining 2-2 draw in Group C. The majority of the crowd was backing Boca and the Argentines roared into a two-goal lead, Miguel Merentiel and Rodrigo Battaglia both scoring in the first half. Two-time European champions Benfica were given a lifeline in first-half stoppage time when Boca's Carlos Palacios mistimed a challenge on Nicolas Otamendi and after a VAR review — which included a red card for protesting from the already substituted Boca midfield Ander Herrera — a penalty was awarded. Veteran Angel di Maria converted from the spot to make it 2-1, but Benfica then had Andrea Belotti sent off in the 71st minute after a wild, high-footed kick into the head of Ayrton Costa. But with six minutes remaining the Portuguese side equalised as Otamendi headed in to make it 2-2. A disappointing result for Boca was compounded by a late red card for Nicolas Figal, who was dismissed for an ugly challenge on Florentino Luis. OPINION: Proteas captain Temba Bavuma has silenced his critics
The SA team have not lost a Test with Bavuma leading the side. Temba Bavuma has always been lauded by his teammates for his leadership skills and he clearly brings more value to the squad than his performances as a top-order batter. He has been repeatedly criticised by the public and the media, however, for not standing up when the national team needed the skipper most, particularly at the 2023 one-day World Cup in India (where South Africa reached the semifinals) after he scored just 122 runs in six matches at an average of 20.33. In the Test format, however, he has shone as captain of the side. In a total of 64 career Test matches, Bavuma has contributed 3 709 runs at an average of 38.22. As captain, he has racked up 911 runs in 10 matches at an average of 56.93. Unbeaten run as skipper Even more impressive is that the Proteas have gone unbeaten in all 10 of those games, winning nine and drawing one. Though he was dismissed for two ducks in his first Test as captain against West Indies in Centurion in February 2023, Bavuma has since been a key member of the squad, hitting three centuries and five half-centuries. In addition, the Proteas have won their last eight games on the trot (though Bavuma missed two of those fixtures against Bangladesh due to an elbow injury) on four different continents. And while the national team were criticised for facing weaker opposition than other sides in qualifying for the World Test Championship final, Bavuma felt his squad had proved they deserved their spot by beating Australia by five wickets last week to lift the trophy. 'It feels worth it' Despite all the criticism, the skipper said it had all been worthwhile after leading the national team to a historic title. 'It's not easy being captain of South Africa, and all the sacrifices, all the disappointment, in this moment it feels worth it,' he said. Though he hasn't always been great, Bavuma's efforts both with the bat and as captain of the Test side over the last couple of years have ensured he will go down as a legend of the South African game. And regardless of what else he achieves in his career, all the praise will be well deserved.
